This color educational/training film is about how to sell cars to women. It is circa the mid 1970s.
Opening Credits: Chrysler logo (:07-:17). Our host introduces us to the word of the day - Women. An old timey woman looks at herself in a mirror. Another woman does the same. Another woman looks in the mirror as our narrator explains that women have come a long way. In the 1950s/1960s, womens role changed even more. A girl straight out of the 1960s fixes her hair. It is now the 1970s, short skirts and independence, a woman steps into the standing mirror and walks away
(:18-1:55). Our host steps into the same mirror. And pulls down a shade that reads: Selling to Women (1:56-2:22). Our host sits on a desk and explains. He flips through a magazine. Numerous ads are shown. Our host continues to explain. He opens a flyer: Women on Wheels (2:23-4:36). Service Department sign. Cars in a dealership being worked on. Women in different shots with cars. Thick carpeting and crushed velour shown in an automobile. A woman sits in a car. New advertising. Our host talks as a woman sits at a desk with a salesman in the background (4:37-6:25). Scenario #1 - A woman sits at a desk with a salesman and discusses her situation. Our host explains what is the best car for her (6:26-7:24). Scenario #2 - A woman sits at a desk with a salesman and discusses her situation. Our host explains what is the best car for her (7:24-8:09). Scenario #3 - Another woman sits at a desk with a salesman and discusses her situation. Our host explains what is the best car for her (8:10-9:00). Scenario #4 - A woman sits at a desk with a salesman and discusses her situation. Our host explains what is the best car for her (9:01-9:52). Scenario #5 - A woman sits at a desk with a salesman and discusses her situation. Our host explains what is the best car for her (9:53-10:51). Our host steps back up to the mirror, wraps up the film, and pulls down a THE END sign (10:52-11:18).

The uncanny thing about this relentless crassness is that it is presented as serious, rather than a comedy sketch. Not only that, it is actually a training film, of all things. Truly surreal.

It's 45 years later and women are still less likely than men to focus on the engine, performance, tires and suspension of a car than men. And men are less likely to talk about colors and fabrics than women. But a decent salesman or woman should not make any assumptions and try to scope out the interests of the buyer according to what they ask and how they respond; don't refuse to talk about horsepower just because a woman brings it up and don't refuse to talk about crushed velour just because a man brings it up. And if you really want to piss someone off, just keep steering the conversation away from his or her interests and back to the things you assume would interest them. "Don't be a jerk.", or at least don't seem like one, was good advice 65 years ago and it still works today.

In the 1970s I went with my older sister, who is extremely pretty, to look at a new Chrysler Imperial that our dad was considering buying, and the salesman, who was probably the same age as my sister, started hitting on her. I remember I was sitting inside a car and I heard him ask her if she "liked to party" LOL. We left pretty quickly after that and our dad ended up buying a Buick Park Avenue. LOL

There's too much cultural relativism going on in the comments. Yours is the best point made. Whether we like it or not . . . The "inside baseball" of car sales has always been a rowdy, somewhat boorish and profiling activity. I don't like that, but it'll never change. I will say that with a few fixes, there'd still be true, useful education in the film for today. Sell to customer need. Always.

You should always sell the person, not the sex (or any other assumption). That said, the sexes are different, and some generalized tastes do split along those lines, and that's how we ended up with the Mustang II, VW Cabriolet, the first SLK, etc. You could sell the 2nd gen Interga to a woman, but you sold the GS-R to a guy.

For real, the 70's were an automotive dark age

    • @jasonburger3533
      @jasonburger3533 10 месяцев назад

@@nicklehne7486The 1970s had the longest in length American-made vehicles in history through 1976. Airbags first became available as a $200 option on many American-made vehicles. By the late 1970s, beginning in 1977, a major downsizing took the longest American cars down by nearly 2 feet in length due to the oil crises of 1973 and 1979. The introduction of compact cars made inroads for Japanese cars. They forced American auto manufacturers to produce compact cars. For Ford, that resulted in a disastrous, sometimes deadly defective vehicle known as the Ford Pinto, which came as a compact regular and station wagon model, but blew up and had fires upon rear-end collisions due to a faulty fuel tank design.
Many did not know that the Ford Panther large-vehicle design, which was composed of the Ford LTD, later the Ford Crown Victoria; the Mercury Grand Maquis, and even the luxury Lincoln Town Car, were made with a similar faulty fuel tank design.
As a result of the Ford Pinto problems, lawsuits led to recalls and major payouts due to dead drivers and passengers. As for the Ford LTD, it was made from 1979 to 1982 on that platform, then from 1983 to 2011, was known as the Ford Crown Victoria, or Crown Vic, which was used as police interceptors and taxis as well as general use vehicles. The Mercury division of Ford was a little more upscale than Ford itself, but the Grand Marquis carried the same faulty fuel tank design. The Lincoln Town Car, including limousine models, did as well.
In a response to public pressure. Ford Motor Company began selling Kevlar fire suppression vehicles for the fuel tank issue in 2003. The entire vehicle line was discontinued in 2011. Most police departments and taxi companies have discontinued them as well.
On the bright side, the 1970s saw the introduction of square headlights, power seats, power windows, power door locks, the elimination of "suicide doors" that had been popular on Lincolns in the 1960s, the introduction of fuel injection and cruise control, tinted windows, tilt steering wheels, large chrome bumpers not the plastic bumpers they have had on most, not all vehicles since the late 1980s, better indoor lighting, and more of a focus on safety, generally.
As for women, many mechanics still take advantage of the commonly held perception that many women do not know much about what is under the hood.

Yes, but even doctors, real doctors in their white coats, marketed cigarettes to men and women in the 1930s through the 1950s, even marketing specific cigarettes to pregnant women. The medical profession often marketed cigarettes as healthy products until the 1964 first Surgeon General report was issued. In most workplaces, including hospitals, cigarette smoking was permitted through the late 1980s and 1990s. Restaurants had smoking and non-smoking sections as well even though there were not really non-smoking sections, as cigarette smoke would drift throughout the restaurants.

It was referred to as the Baby Bust until Generation X went into use in the early 1990s. The Mollennials, born 1981 to 1996, are the largest baby boom in history; the highest birthrates in history.

No..this wasn’t intended to be shown a a virtue signal to a public audience. It was intended to educate an almost exclusively, and often chauvinistic male sales staff that treating women with respect and listening to them was in their financial interests. It’s not a public service announcement and having a woman narrator would carry no authority whatsoever to the intended audience.

@@richardgray8593 I am a man, as far as I know, and think that women should have the right to vote. Wyoming did it first in 1870 and the United States followed in 1920. Most other industrialized countries allow women to vote; some, such as Australia, require voting for both men and women to vote or they are fined monetarily. At least the United States does not have mandatory voting.
Personally, I have no problem for women having the right to vote or, for that matter, to go topless in public, just as men.
There are mutual benefits for each for both men and women. Many other nations permit toplessness in public for women to match that of men. I would vote for that.

There are mutual benefits for men and women. Guys are able to go shittless/topless in public. Women might as well. It would give men something more to look at in women. That might occur soon. With all the gender-neutrality of late, that could have a better chance than previously.

"after women got the vote, some even went to work." brother, women have always "worked", did these people ever read about the roles of ancient humans, or tribal people like Native Americans and Africans, right up to the industrial workers of the 18th and 19th centuries?
the MAJORITY of people doing tedious industrial or domestic labor were women--and the majority of THOSE women were black.
i realize it's just a cheesy little training film. we can't expect things like this to delve into complex human history...but damn. don't act like women suddenly started "working" in 1919, lol.
