Hi Steve, Just writing to say thank you. We just returned from our Glacier NP trip, and we based each day off of your videos. You planned our entire trip for us! We did Grinnell Glacier, Iceberg Lake, basically all of your favorites. The snow was late this year so we just went until the trails were closed-off for snow cover, but it was still great hikes and we went far! Sky was clear so we had gorgeous views. I could go on and on.... thank you for the fabulous trip, you picked great trails for us!
My wife and I hiked this beautiful trail. The views were breath taking. You really don't need to be in amazing shape just take it slow. My wife was 20 weeks pregnant when we hiked it and didn't struggle. We went slow and it took us 4 hrs to get from the parking lot to the glacier
Many Glacier. Oh man. Went in June 2018. Water everywhere. Saw a moose, 2 griz and a black bear all in the same day. Not to mention goat way up on the side of Grinnell point. Spectacular piece of heaven for 10 days. Can't wait to come back.
Looks incredible. I'm in Whitefish, Montana right now and we're trying to figure out which hikes to do tomorrow and on Wednesday. This might be a winner!
Hello Steve, I’m a huge fan of your channel and documentary on Glacier. I’m going to Glacier for five days of hiking and photography, leaving Alberta Canada on July 19 2022. I was wondering what the best time is to be at the viewpoint of Lower Grinnell Lake from the Grinnell Glacier Trail. I want Mount Gould lit up as much as possible and not in the shadows. Thank you.
Thanks. My shots of the lake from th trail were taken 11am -noon - from the lower angle-I’d guess because it’s a way up the trail. The divide is in shadow by noon. I’m usually there in sept when the Sun is in a diff place. The shot with the lupins and the red rock cliff is farther up the trail an looks down a valley that runs more n-s so it gets more light later. There’s another spot up the trail too. If you want the wall over the glacier lit shoot it by noon. Also I’ve been up that trail 16 or so times. It doesn’t always look that good. Weather changes quickly. You’ll need to be weather aware and lucky. Btw- I’m hoping to do a Banff; yoho jasper doc - maybe next year. Been there 5 times but it’s been 10 yrs since last visit.
@@TheWestisBig I got drawn for the shuttle to Lake OHara in Yoho August 30. It’s considered the most spectacular hike in the Canadian Rockies. Thanks Steve, I think I’ll just go early and have a long lunch at the glacier/ top and make my way slowly down and take tons of shots. Your video is incredible. I owe you a big thank you because I feel pretty prepared because of it.
Lucky. I've never been to Lake Ohara- heard its great though. I have been to Emerald Lake a few times and when the weather is good its a great photo op. And the outdoor Bistro is good too.
The Glacier Website has good info on this. FYI- my first video on this trail was made in the early 2000's. Back then there were 27 glaciers in the park, I made the first HD version there were 25 glaciers in the park- I'm updating it again and now there are 26 in the park. I assume they are smaller- see my video on melting glaciers for definitions and historic photos showing the shrinkage--. Also, look at the Sun Road historic opening date chart- its an interesting proxy for annual snow fall.
Grinnel Glacer glacier- located in the heart of this beautiful park in Montana . It was named after George Bird Grinnell , an early American ecologist and explorer who was a supporter of the park's creation.
I’ve done this trail many times by boat and not by boat. The no boat route is flat, in trees and mostly near a creek or a lake. So the only view is the view back towards the MGH. the main reason to take not use the boat is availablity if seats on the boat. they fill up quick and the cost $. if you take the boat you’re on their schedule too. btw- if photos r important, the light is much better early in the day before it goes on the other side of the mts.
Grinnell glacier trailhead is in Many Glacier on the closed east side. If u have Mountaineering skills there’s a way to get to Grinnell Glacier via the Highline Trail. That would be a long day.
Depends on the weather. Its likely to be covered by many feet of snow in places, making it very dangerous to try in May. But if the snow has melted it could be fine.
@@TheWestisBig Thats interesting . We lived in Alberta for four years back in the late 1960's and spent all our holidays in some part of the rockies , Canada or USA . Visited Glacier frequently when doing work down in Lethbridge . I got interested in the geology , in those days the Columbian Icefields in Canada had markers that were put down by surveyors back in the 1800's when they first realised how large it was and it was clear ( apart from the obvious curves of the valleys !hat the glaciers had been melting for a very long time well before our paranoia with "climate change"
When I first made Glacier NP videos about 20 years ago there were 27 Glaciers in the park according to the USGS. Several years later there were 25 and the last years the info signs in the park claim there are 26. I too saw the glacial foot markers at the Columbia Ice Fields in the early 2000's I think. Then One year they were moved to apparently random places near the foot. Sad. I've been studying geology lately to add a geology section to the Glacier video. FYI there's a Professor on youtube Nick Zenter who live streams his geology classes and also makes educational videos from his home. I'm learning alot. If you're a geologist who knows some thing about the Louis OverThrust Fault and the old argillites and stromatolites, plate movement and exotic terrain accretion etc., I could really use per review help to verify what I right is valid.
@@TheWestisBig Not a Geologist I am afraid , although I spent most of my working life in the construction business ! more a hobby sparked really by our vacations in the Rockies . I still have some books published in 1963, in part based on "A Geological Survey of Canada 1842", one on Jasper National Park and one on Banff . Just lovely facts and many comments on how the glaciers have been receding but also of course how the mountains were formed millions of years ago . Nothing about climate change ! I admit to being a sceptic about "man made climate change" but it is obvious that the the climate has and always will change , too many variables for it not to and as far as we can see , nothing in the universe stands still . I have watched some great videos on youtube on the breaking up of the the great ice age period , it must have been a real cataclysmic event . The West of America really is big . Keep up the good work .
the climate has always been changing. and since the little iceage ended in 1850ish of course it’s warmer. my 93 min glacier park video has a segment with charts and stuff
I went there in 1987 and walked on the glacier when I was eight years old. I saw a bear running along the mountain ridge. To this day it was one of the most spectacular things that I have ever seen. I am sad that it is almost gone.

That’s great!! i was there 2weeks ago and the snow on the grinnel glacier trail was quite low so i didn’t even try it. how high did you get to go?

If the east side is closed the trail and all of Many Glacier will be off limits/ closed.
Been there...it's a tough hike...especially when one can't get a seat on the Boat! But worth it.
