18:24 she was a child when the deal was made, and even though she grew up, at the time the deal was made, she believed it would work out. It was also her singular hope for 10 years. Going back on that belief is more than just hard.
Not to mention, literally what other choice was there? Even if she were an adult, she couldn't beat Arlong or his Fishmen, and trying anything could easily result in losing others in her village.
And tbf, on the surface, Arlong IS a (fish)man of his word. Hes a pirate but he still values honor and lives by a code, or at least wants to appear that way to his crew. She has seen how he operates over the years, and how he treats his crew and rewards their loyalty.
"Help me" -> Nami's first words during her introduction on episode 1. She was being tricky that time "Help me" -> Nami's iconic words in this episode because she really mean it this time
When Zeff said "It's their time", and Garp replies "Like Hell is" oh, us fans felt it..Garp is an Old man in the game, but he has weight in those words.
As she said “we don’t lie about money on this crew!” Arlong makes deals for money all the time. You pay me I let you live. You ignore my pirate activities we pay you money. You want your village’s freedom, pay me 100 million. She’s always seen him treat money as serious business. So she expected him to be true to his word. As other have said the Help Me scene was one of the most iconic moments in the original series and is a powerful moment that often converts many people into life long fans.
The scene with Luffy trusting Nami with his straw hat is one of the most iconic scenes of the series. And if you saw this part in the anime, and were hyped as all heck, then you knew you would be in this show for the long haul. A lot of fans use this scene as an indicator if someone is a fan like them.
It's also a core of Luffy's character. He tends to fall asleep or stop paying attention during long backstories from people he already decided that he likes. The reasons don't matter to him. He just wants to helps his friends. He was trying to ham it up intentionally because he picked up that this was a very difficult ask for Nami to make.
It also feels off mostly due to editing in my opinion. We're talking about tiny changes here. But a better understanding what worked so well about the anime would've done wonders. The showrunner wasn't allowed to be involved for a huge part of the editing process due to the strike, so that might have played a major part in this. To understand what I mean, just imagine the split screen "right" with the inhale cut off (just like it is in the anime). Would've been a minimal change, but so much better and less cheesy.
Nami made this deal as a child and with a child’s eyes, she really believed he would honor the deal that she was desperate to make. BTW, such a sweet fur kid, my senior fur kid was sleeping too while I watched the reaction.
The live action also pretty much makes Arlong actually fully break the deal by attacking the village despite Nami having done nothing to break it on her end. Him telling Nezumi about the money and having it taken from her so that she would have to start anew is otherwise the typical "deal with the devil" where you can trust the deal you made but only in the most literal sense. It makes it so that he still sticks technically to his word that once she brings him the money, she gets the village, but he just makes sure she doesn't have it. I always found that much more heartbreaking because it gives him that smuck "technically I am honoring the deal" moment that feels so much more unfair than him simply being the asshole that doesn't honor it anyway.
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 This is the worst series in the world, it has no connection at all, and it lacks a lot of important details that they never used. As for the real One Piece, the anime One Piece is just the best, nothing else, and the talk is over. 👎👎👎👎👎🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🤬👊😒😒😒😒😒😒😒😒
For Luffy his hat is his most precious treasure and he refuses to let other people touch it, in the anime when Nami does so he shouts at her for doing so. Him putting the hat on her means not only does he trust her and wants her to protect it while he fights, but that she's his treasure too. You two got it quite well. Also when Luffy says he doesn't understand what's going, it's because it doesn't matter, he'll help his friends no matter what he doesn't need to know what's going on they come first. Also in the anime Luffy actually doesn't hear Nojiko's story as he just wanders off and comes across Nami stabbing herself. Glad you're enjoying this, also you might be wondering why Zeff know's who Luffy is to Garp the simplest answer is the name. Everybody in the old day's knows Garp's full name, Monkey D Garp it's all that's needed to connect the two. Monkey D is not a very common name though I can't tell you why without some huge spoilers. As for fishmen their origins are not entirely know, they are humanoids with attributes of fish in the sea for example Arlong is a Sawtooth Shark and Kurobi is a manta ray. The thing is they are, by default, stronger, faster, and tougher than most humans. But because of this they were enslave which caused many to view humans in an extremely negative light Arlong chief among them.
Now that you've finished this episode I highly HIGHLY recommend watching the anime version of Nami's "Help me" scene. It's one of the most iconic One Piece scenes. It's that moment and the walk to confront Arlong that people fell in love with the series.
fun trivia: the nami's "help me" scene and the crew waiting in pose as luffy heads to avenge her are shot exactly like in the manga panels. Also, you met less than half of the crew so far!
@@Lothiril you dont count luffy. we got 4. gonna be half when they meet chopper and it will stay like that for a long while. Franky and Robin join way later on, then brook and jimbei, the tenth right now its not fixed, could be yamato
I always just figured that she didn't tell anyone about the deal because she didn't want anyone to try and help her because she was scared that if they did they'd end up being hurt. And that she also felt that she deserved to be hated because she hated herself for working for her mother's killer.
@@agenttheater5 Fishmen have expert knowledge of the seas and underwater but limited knowledge in land and fortifications. After killing Bellemere they found one of Nami's maps in her pockets and because it was so detailed for strategically reasons they took Nami by force and made her join the crew against her will but Arlong made the 100,000,000 Berry promise to entice her to cooperate. When initially met by the village they are appaled by her decision as Nami proclaimed that if living a decent life got you killed then she'd rather be despicable and live. Initially banned from Coco(yashi) Village Nojiko tracked Nami down and learned of Nami and Arlongs promise. Telling the village they remained ignorant to the truth. Nojiko even got tattoos of tangerine vines on her body to cheer up Nami so they both had tattoos. When Nami left with Luffy Nojiko gave her one of her wrist/ankle gold rings as a keepsake for her travels.
As something to note, Arlong is lawful evil. If Nami actually managed to get him the money, he would have honored the deal... but he had no intention of allowing her to get that far, as you see. Loopholes and all that. Lawful, but still damn evil.
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2Oh yeah that's one of the alignments in Dungeons and Dragons. Lawful evil is like...evil lawyers. They'll stick to their word, but you'd better analyze that word completely because they'll exploit every loophole in it they can.
@BJGvideos another example is the literal Devil (forgot his name) in Baldurs Gate 3 that has contracts with clauses and loopholes that make many of his deals screw over the acceptee of said deal, yet he gives the player the most straightforward no strings attached deal which makes it even more sus cause that HAS to mean there's invisible strings tied to his motives outside of the deal.
Nami believed in the deal she made with Arlong because it was literally her only hope for saving the village. She wouldn't be able to beat him in a fight, and any Marines that came along once he conquered the village were (clearly) either wiped out or bought off. She saw no other way out, so she clinged to that hope because it was the only choice she had.
Basically. They act like brothers. A small stumble from the live action: Sanji was supposed to be present when Mihawk cut Zoro down. That's when he started to respect Zoro for how he went about pursuing his dreams. They have a silent understanding and respect for each other, but Sanji interacts with Zoro like he did with Zeff (that's just how he gets down, and he's more abrasive in the source material). Zoro respects that Sanji is a capable fighter and tactician, so if Zoro falls down on the job, he knows that Sanji can pick up the slack. BUT, Sanji is also endlessly and irrationally self sacrificing, and that becomes a problem occasionally.
Arlong is never this supremacist in the original. He legitimately hates CERTAIN humans and ensures he uses fear to stay in charge. Hordy Jones, on the other hand, is this brutal and callous. He makes Arlong look like a dalmatian in comparison
Back in the day... this moment when Nami finally ask for help. It was Ep. 37 in the anime series..this was the moment when many peole including my 15 year old self.. "This show is more, way more then just goofiness, comedy and stuff" ... And the fans were right.
21:10 Zoro has a simplistic philosophy of "words have meaning with action". That's why he's very straight forward, extremely honest and holds conviction. To him, words actually mean something once action backs it up. He was even alright with dying by Mihawk's blade once he lost because he believes a lost duel should mean the end of a swordsman. That's why he firmly believes in Luffy. Luffy freed Zoro from the stockade while telling Zoro that he had no hidden goals other than freeing Zoro so that Zoro can continue his dream and it was true. Zoro finds no reason to believe in Nami's good side because up to this point, she's never shown anything to afford his trust of her so he only sees the surface, "Nami lied and she's not on their side".
Why would Nami doubt Arlong won't keep his side of the deal??? He kept his deal with Bellemaire (Nami's mother) and didn't hurt them for 8 years. He didn't hurt the villagers at all for 8 years as long as they are paying him tributes. The only reason he went back on his deal was not the money (he didn't even got the money as it was confiscated by Marines) it was because Nami was just too valuable for him to let her go
16:02 This is probably the one change I don't like, in the source both the guy with the scar and Nami's sister were aware of what she was doing(I think most people in the village were). It's why Nami's sister has tattoos to show support to Nami as Nami hated getting branded with a tattoo.
"Luffy, help me!" is the most iconic moment of the East Blue Saga, and for many people is the moment they were truly hooked on One Piece. The show had to not only do that moment, but they had to stick it, and oh my did they stick it!
1:20 Also, after China Zoro's made a point of always going out of his way to make sure he doesn't treat women any differently from men. No matter how badly he might treat someone or how well he might treat someone he will treat them the same regardless of gender. I think in this case it's a case of him not giving name the benefit of the doubt just because she's a woman and saying 'she made her choice and that's that' like he would with a man - if Luffy likes a person he'll do what he can to help them even if they say they don't need it. That's why Sanji and Zoro argue - Zoro stands on treating everyone equally, Sanji will always make exceptions with women, if not giving them the benefit of the doubt then will never attack a woman (in either way - he hates men who would hurt or harass a woman), though some have pointed out it's more stupidity rather than chivalry to not fight back against a woman when she is trying to kill you (Sanji won't budge though).
One of the things you learn to love about One Piece is how interconnected so many things are. Meeting and learning of characters, history, events, locations, devil fruits, etc that Oda had spent almost three decades creating and expanding all while pushing the greater story along. Oda is a God-tier storyteller of our generations.
That end scene with the crew standing up for Nami on the forest trail is pretty much a 1 for 1 from the Anime. It was awesome, and your in for a treat on the next one 👀
The reason Sanji was quick to say he believes Luffy about being wrong with Nami is simple, Sanji has a crush on almost every woman in the show his eyes catch, it's not as obvious in the live action but in the anime is very obvious he does everything any woman says to him, SPECIALLY Nami
10:18 it wouldn't have affected Arlong that much if they'd been eating fish for the simple fact that - he's not a fish. In spite of what fishmen and merfolk were classified as for hundreds of years (meaning that if they were classified as fish they weren't seen as people or as having any rights that humans have) they are not fish.
Luffy may be immature in many ways, but he is incredibly emotionally intelligent. Luffy does not care about the past, he cares about the present, and will decide almost immediately if he likes someone or not the scene where Nami is crying and asks Luffy for help is one of the most iconic scenes from the anime/manga, and they did a brilliant job in the live action with it the hat is Luffy's treasure, and given to him by Shanks, and he wants to protect it to return it to Shanks eventually; by putting the hat in Nami's care, it shows that Luffy trusts Nami completely, and doesnt care about her past, he knows she is a good person and his friend
But that's the thing - technically Arlong didn't lie. He said the matter would be closed if she brought him the money by sunrise. His not attacking the village before she brought him the money or his preventing her from delivering the money wasn't part of the deal. Technically he kept his word. Which is actually worse than if he had lied.
Yeah, the entire final sequence from the moment Nami stabs herself is almost completely lifted from the source, and is considered the most iconic moment of the arc. I actually think the "of course I will" moment is a taaaad cheesy because it's not quite like the anime, which is a bit more snappy 🤔
yeah it didnt hit for me either. but it was close enough so i gave it a pass. its not as good as the anime but they didnt leave anything super important out so im cool with it. its kinda hard to grasp that scene i mean nami actually looks like shes going insane in the anime and luffy was big mad at arlong. just hit different still i guess its the best an adaptation to LA can do cant complain about everything.
@@ms-literary6320 He doesn't scream Arlong's name, that only happened in dub. He screams "Atarimaeda!" which, although it does mean of course I will, doesn't have a resolve that you can shout out in frustration.. a bit like "Obviously!!". This is one of those issues where it's just hard to translate its strength and sentiment correctly.
09:40 They did nerf Namis Mom in the Live Action. Here what happens in the anime: (Spoiler alert for this one episode if u wanna see it for the first time again unspoiled.) In the anime she surpises Arlong, sends him flying while standing on his chest, her Gun barrel in his mouth ready to blow his brains... She only loses the "duel" because she tries to negocitate with arlong from a postion of power she only had in this first Moment... But even with arlong dead, she would have been overwhelmed by his crew after killing Arlong, so negotiation was the only way of survival. But Arlong just bites her gun barrel into pieces before she can pull the trigger, because she stops to ask him a question.
Although this episode is one of the best episodes of Live-action, this episode doesn't do justice to Nami's backstory, her motives, and Luffy's character. It is 10 times better in manga/anime because several things are different. It's not even about compressing the events here, but completely changing it, I won't spoil it in case in 10 years or so you want to watch the anime/read the manga. About Luffy putting his hat on Nami. It signifies that Luffy is entrusting his treasure to Nami so that he can protect her treasure, which is her village/her people/her family. This is a very beautiful scene as Luffy rarely does it even right now.
100% they did a decent adaptation though with the time restraints. im kinda sad they cut out namis goodbye to the village she was supposed to rob them and leave her treasure behind it indicates that despite her not needing the money anymore shes still very money hungry. it was good enough for me but the anime version is way better. i see it as more of a summary of the anime.
@RageKage987 Truthfully speaking, I have more regrets about them changing the part to luffy actively seeking out the truth of Nami's story and Zoro also listening to Nami's backstory. This takes away the high emotional intelligence and trust luffy showed without knowing what nami has been through. His sole reason to beat arlong was because arlong hurt nami, not because arlong terrorized people or killed them or hates humans. This also shows that luffy doesn't need to know someone's past to evaluate them. I don't know how well this would have translated to live action, but manga/anime version makes me want to follow luffy, live action version makes luffy a generic MC.
@@tarunupadhyay2821 "His sole reason to beat arlong was because arlong hurt nami, not because arlong terrorized people or killed them or hates humans." It seems like that's the case in the live action show too. Luffy didn't know about Nami's deal to ransom back Coco Village from Arlong, or how Arlong sent Nezumi to sabotage that deal. All Luffy knew was that Arlong had killed Nami's mother, Nami had joined Arlong's crew as a result, and (much more recently) Arlong did something to Nami that drove her to self-harm.
@@paulchapman8023 You missed the part where Luffy already had a beef with Arlong due to their encounter at Baratie for Grandline map. Luffy was already showing "dislike" for Arlong when they visited Coco village and Luffy saw one house upside down. Also, I agree that the main reason for Luffy to fight Arlong in Live action was that he hurt Nami, but here Luffy has somewhat idea why Nami was hurt. Luffy was aware of what happened in the past. Luffy was aware that Arlong was terrorizing the village. In the manga, luffy explicitly states that he doesn't care about her past. He saw Nami crying and hurting herself and went to Arlong Park to fight Arlong but he didn't even know what Arlong looked like. Luffy had 0 idea what Nami had gone through until he saw Nami's pen covered in blood. I don't know about others, but all of this makes the story 10 times better for me and makes Luffy a far more greater MC than what live-action tried to portray. No hate to live action, I really like that as well, but as a separate timeline with what-if scenarios.
The way I see it, the three “of course I will” declarations in differing tones have different meanings but all mean the same to Nami in the end. The first, is a promise to Nami, that he will help her. The second is his firm resolve to himself that he is absolutely going to help her. And the screamed out one is basically a declaration of war and that Captain’s Call to arms before “let’s go!” to Zoro, Usopp and Sanji. But to Nami, they all mean one thing - Luffy has her back and when he says he will do something, he darn well means it.
They actually don’t explain this in the live action, but the reason nojiko (nami’s sister) has tattoos, is because in the anime, nami goes to the village after striking a deal with arlong (I think I can’t exactly remember correctly, but it was something like that) and shows those tattoos with like a forced smile, the villagers don’t exactly ostracized her but do look a bit disgusted by her I guess I can say, nojiko saw this and the next day she also got tattoos, just for nami to feel better. Also, I feel like they also didn’t explain well the reason why Bellemare did that, because I have seen reactors mad at why she said they were her daughters- basically, in the anime (lmao sorry), the scar guy (can’t remember his name) goes after nojiko and nami and tells them to run away because they aren’t register as bellmare’s daughter (she actually didn’t know, in the anime, arlong was here and she was cooking in the house), nami and nojiko were at a distance and nami grew mad because Bellemare didn’t actually say anything until like the last moment when she said she has two daughters, and literally you could see the horrified looks of nojiko and nami, and then it goes like the live action. (I’m sorry it was a long time since I saw, I might have missed something but it does go like that)
That Nami Scene at the end was the thing I looked forward to seeing most when starting the Live Action Series. The scene in the Manga and Anime still pulls tears from me, and the actress absolutely kills it here. Even Luffy's exclamation felt appropriate in the Live Action context. Just, flawless performance by the cast. I think my main comparison criticism comes from the Bellamere/Arlong confrontation. It was way better, and more gut wrenching in the Manga and Anime, but they still got the message across. Glad you guys are liking it. Hope you guys give the Anime a spin sometime!
Besides Nami making the deal as a kid, like other have said, Arlong also *technically* didn't break his promise. This is more poignant in the original, where after Nezumi (which means "rat" in Japanese, BTW) steals Nami's money, she runs to confront Arlong about it, actually shouting at him that he broke their deal. Arlong then grabs her, stares her in the eye, and asks, "WHEN did I break our deal?" He said he will give the village back if Nami brings him the 100M. Nothing more, nothing less. She has no response to this. Nami then runs back to the village, where the villagers decide they've got nothing to lose anymore and march on Arlong Park to fight. In the manga/anime, THAT'S when the whole tattoo stabbing happens. It's not just the money, the last straw that finally breaks Nami is seeing all the people she was trying to protect walk off towards their deaths. As for the "OF COURSE I WILL!!" bit, I feel the cheese a bit too, even as a fan of the original. I think it comes from the fact that they changed the mood a bit. In the live action, the scene happens at night, Luffy is scowling and very, very serious, so it made sense for him to say the line in a silent, reassuring, tranquil fury kinda way at first. In the anime, he has a more neutral expression at first and answers Nami in a flat, matter-of-fact way. He only starts scowling when she finally asks him for help. Then he puts his hat on her head, turns away, walks a few steps, and then takes a deep breath any goes straight to yelling the line to the heavens. He only says it once there. I think the cheese in the live action comes from the fact that they wanted to have it both ways - they wanted the calmer reading that would fit their altered mood, but they also wanted the shout, so they'd be faithful to the iconic scene from the source, and because it's in general a typical Luffy thing to do. And to bridge these two, they had Luffy say the line a third time in between. It's certainly a decision they made =)
Something you won't find mentioned in One Piece but already explained by Oda the creator of One Piece) himself. There are 2 kinds of pirates, pirates who go out to pillage and plunder are called Morganeers. Pirates who seek adventure on the seas are Peace Mains.
I think that the problems Ken has with Luffy's "Of course I will" line are a direct consequence of the subtle changes between the live action characters and their animated counterparts. In the anime, the characters are much more exaggerated. I'd say Sanji would be the biggest example of this. Maybe Nami is the closest crewmember in terms of personality to the anime. There are many more moments that are played for laughs and it works. The tone is more lighthearted and cartoonish in certain parts. Luffy is portrayed more often as a bumbling idiot with a heart of gold, while in the live action, he is much more openly empathic and endearing albeit a bit dense. So the "Of course I will" with him yelling into the air feels right at home in the cartoon, but not so much with real people. With that being said, like Ken pointed out, for the overwhelming majority of the show they knocked out of the park. IMO, making these changes to the crew was absolutely needed for the live action to shine in the way that no other adaptation has so far. After all, at their core, they are still the same characters, unlike a show such as Avatar, which made fundamental changes to the main cast when translating it to live action. So, to summarize, the genuinely good changes they made to have these larger than life characters work in the real world are precisely why certain scenes might feel out of place. The hands of the showrunners were tied. There is no universe where they can make big changes to an iconic scene like this and not get publicly executed by the fanbase. To be fair, there are many people who still loved this scene and felt its emotional weight, so in that respect, I think they still did a great job considering the monumental task.
4:21 No Ken, it is NOT the same thing. "Can't help" means that he hasn't got the information they are after. "Won't help" means that he does have the info, but refuses to cooperate.
In the Manga/Anime Zoro and Sanji have a huge rivalry between them, always bickering and fighting each other, sometimes even while facing off against enemies.
18:59 yes there are fish women, there just aren't any in Arlong's crew. There are mermaids and merman as well we just haven't met them yet. Can't wait till we meet Jinbei - the Warlord that rat-man mentioned and whom Arlong said is a fool (they know each other). And Camie. And Hachi - I think we can still work him into the story I think. Oh yes, and Neptune, Otohime, Ryuboshi, Manboshi, Shirahoshi, Fukaboshi, Madam Shyarly, and of course Fisher Tiger. Hoping we get that far. We could've worked Madam Shyarly into this story.
Nami begged Luffy to leave and not fight Arlong because she didn't want to go back. She only brought him the map and told him to throw Luffy in the ocean to save Luffy's life. When it comes to judging Arlong most folks have a hard time seeing clearly when under the control of their abuser. The performance when the money is being confiscated by the Marines is my favorite work of any actor in this series. Nami wounded her soul to get that money. She helped Arlong raid other villages like he did to hers, all in the hopes of freeing her home. That guilt, disappointment, and rage all be heard in her gutteral screams.
As someone who's been a pirate since high school back in the early 2010's, I love seeing new pirates because of the live action. Do you two have plans to watch the anime? Or at least watch all the openings?
Its fascinating that hollywood tried to push a strong independent woman archetype and always failed miserably. And here we have a girl boss that's well written and her strongest moment was her asking for help from another individual. Didn't make her any less of a Woman, but portrays her as an actual strong woman that accepts her vulnerability. ❤
The scene with Nami and Nojiko at their moms grave is defintiely the most frustrating to watch compared to the anime. Also yes Ken is right. The scene where Nami asks Luffy for help is probably the most iconic scene from early One Piece. They in fact tried so hard to have it copied 1:1 that they left a line in that doesn't make sense with another change they made. Slight spoiler for the anime: When Nami says Luffy doesn't know whats going on and he says "Yeah I don't" that is actually a fact. In the anime /manga when Nojiko tells the story about Nami and their mom, Luffy decides that he will go for a walk because he doesn't care what happened in Nami's past.
yeah kinda weird he said that in the live action bc he actually listened to nojiko and didnt walk off so he actually does know exactly whats going on i guess he meant he didnt have the full story bc he didnt hear it from nami herself but that doesnt really make much sense either. they should have had luffy leave or fall asleep when nojiko was explaining dont know why they changed that but kept the same line.
@@RageKage987 Yeah it is a change that shouldn't have happened. It represents so much about Luffy, he doesn't need to know what happened in your past, who is right and wrong, why you do the things you do. All he needs to know is that a friend had the courage to ask for help.
@@RageKage987 Eh, I don't think that would work. In a cartoon, it's kinda funny, but in live action, it would come off as disrespectful if he falls asleep. I think you're definitely right about Luffy meaning that he doesn't have the full context when he says that he doesn't know when Nami is crying. I think it still makes sense for him to say, but IMO it would've been more powerful in this version if he didn't say anything.
@@RageKage987At the time that Nojiko told Luffy about Nami, Nojiko didn't know about Nami's deal to buy back Coco Village. Of course Luffy wouldn't have known about it either, because nobody could have told him about it. All Luffy learned from Nojiko was that Arlong had killed her and Nami's mother, and that Nami had joined Arlong's crew as a result. I think that qualifies as "not knowing what's going on."
In the anime Namis mom kicks arlongs ass for a split second. Also she gives up her life for her kids in the anime and manga because the village are hiding the kids and are going to ship them away so they aren’t found.
The of course I will arms to the sky of luffy, is definitely a anime moment that the fans love, nami and this moment is the moment that makes so many go from, I like one piece to (I love one piece) so, even if it seemed a little cringy at the moment, I appreciate that they captured that moment for the fans.
I think if you guys continue forward with this series when season 2 eventually comes out you might have to embrace the cheesiness a bit more. Mostly because there's so many weirdos waiting to be introduced in season 2.
You both were quite accurate regarding the symbolism of the straw hat. Indeed, it is such an iconic scene in both the anime and manga, so they aimed to capture it as if recreating the panel from the manga. In my opinion, they executed it remarkably well. However, the one aspect where they did the actress who portrayed Nami's mother an injustice was the confrontation scene. In the manga, it is significantly more captivating as she showcases her abilities as a former marine. Unfortunately, in the adaptation, she approached the situation as if she lacked combat training One more episode to go..❤😂🎉
One of my complaints about the live action vs the original is that Luffy doesn't hear Nami's backstory, doesn't get attacked Arlong, and doesn't watch Arlong's crew attack the village. So, in the original, Luffy just sails here. Hangs out and eats food. Sees Nami screaming "Arlong" then asks him for help, and without any context goes charging up to Arlong park and Kicks Arlong's ass. No context, doesn't know the reason, has actually never seen Arlong up until this point, has no real justification or motivation other than "You made Nami cry and now your face is going into the dirt." Its not a bad direction but I just personally prefer the original.
Technically in this, it can still work the same way. Luffy knows Nami is working for Arlong, which he knew in the original. He found that out by being told, though not by Arlong himself like in this version. Luffy knows Nami is in distress because of Arlong, which he knew in the original. He heard her scream his name while stabbing herself. He doesn’t know about Nezumi and Arlong being in cahoots, like the original. Nobody did until Nezumi takes the hidden treasure right as Nami is ready to pay. Not even Nojiko knew. He doesn’t know Nami is enslaved by Arlong to chart maps for him in exchange for a deal to save her village, like in the original. He pretty much finds that out in the fight. He comes across her hurting herself and screaming Arlong’s name, like in the original. That moment when Nami finally feels all hope is lost. He is still right in that he doesn’t know anything about the entire situation. He only knows one thing with three words - “Luffy…help me…”. And that one thing he knows? Arlong has made Nami cry. Just like in the original.
Kids make stupid decisions sometimes and are easily manipulated. What do people expect from kids, right? And young Nami lost her only parent and some people expect her to make the right decisions whilst broken and alone? Plus in the original, kid Nami was kidnapped... her only choice then was to believe Arlong. It's called being a flawed human. I would have done or believed worse at 8 years old. Maybe it's just the portrayal in this episode... to be fair, Arlong seems a bit believable and Nami looked a bit more desperate --- in the anime.
Promises or Vows are very important to Zorro. And his loyalty to Luffy comes before anything or anyone and thats why Nami betraying Luffy is a hard pill to swallow. Plus the fact that they only knew each other for a very short time. Feelings comes second to Zorro.
Human - gender neutral Fishman gender neutral There are Fishman and Merfolk in this world. Fishman literally are humanoids that have qualities of different marine life and merfolk is basically what you are thinking upper body of humanoid (can look human, can look like fishman) and lower body are fins or tentacles.
For Captain Nezumi , "Nezumi" mean Rat in japenese (That's why is like that). And for Nami's mother name "Belle-Mere", Oda use it for a good meaning. In French, "Belle mère" mean step mother for Nami & Nojiko. Here the link to the same scene of Nami with Luffy in Anime , really good both : Luffy gives his hat to Nami - ruclips.net/video/dM0tpzY8nFc/видео.htmlsi=vSzXJurOaeikml7M The cast react also to the Nami's scene, ONE PIECE Cast Reacts to Nami's Breakdown : ruclips.net/video/AkGJWK7zJ-I/видео.htmlsi=GtHq0sZl6Pre2RLr
So in the manga, Luffy stops Nami from stabbing herself, silently puts the hat on her after she asks for help, then the scene zooms out for his "OF COURSE I WILL" that's seriously exaggerated, but this show has him say it quietly twice first and then get super excited and throw his hands in the air. It made a lot more sense with the cartoony-ness of the manga, but yeah I agree, it was one of the decisions I didn't agree with. Him saying it quietly once would have been way better.
Nami made the deal as a child and lived for it for a decade. The thing about Arlong - also - is that he's fairly indirect about his deceit. He prides himself on being honest with his word, and *hates* humans (in small part, as there's a longer story there) because they're so dishonest about what they say they'll do. That's also the reason he didn't *personally* screw Nami over, and got the marine to do it.
yeah he basically found a loophole so his word remains true he didnt really break his promise he bended the rules. which is ironic bc i see that as worse that just breaking a promise. hes basically trying to keep his reputation while also getting what he wants. and its even worse in the anime bc arlong takes the majority cut when the marines steal the money so hes not even pretending to not be involved its obvious but he just wont admit it.
My one complaint about season one was actually Zoro. In the anime/Manga, he is 3 parts swords to 2 parts bad ass to 2 parts directionally impaired, 1 part passion and 1 part dumb ass. It kind of feels like they removed the passion and the dumb ass and replaced it with brooding and emo.
the luffy hat pass off was not so drawn out in manga or anime, they kinda milked it. It was more a " stop her stabbing herself, affirm luffy doesn't care about your past, help me, slaps hat on head, starts walking towards enemy, of course i will" ... it felt like they dragged out every moment of this even the of course i will as 3x, instead of just one
It's a good call on the Nami and Luffy scene it's done almost EXACTLY from the Manga panels and anime frame for frame. Although that hand over the mouth and Luffys hands in the air and yelling seem a bit over the top. It's not really for their characters and the situation. If they would have modified this scene too much all of us real fans would have been quite upset.
Nami's actress does a phenomenal job during that scene. Sadly, while Luffy's actor does a great job with Luffy's standard energy, I feel he is a bit lacking in the intensity when Luffy gets serious. I think the real problem though is the director. I feel the slow motion for the hat pass is way too dramatic and unnatural, a moderately fast but firm pass I think would have been better and more natural and without any loss in the weight of the action, The pose also felt way too much like a child mimicking a scene more than anything else. The pose is really just kinda a "shouting to the sky" kinda thing, but I don't feel any of that energy there. Yeah, it's a super Iconic scene and easily one of my favourites in the entire series, so I'm maybe a bit too critical of it.
The reason Nami thought the deal would go through is because Arlong gang has a strict code on the matter of money to ensure that they don't kill each other in their sleeps for money. After all without rules and consequences, no one would be loyal even among fishmen. So Nami thought Arlong won't break his code since she is a part of Arlong Pirates. But allas he did. Honestly Nami is to blame here too. It was both naïve and risky to buy the village from Arlong. At probably 20 - 50 Million (half her goal) she could have hired a Mercenary or a Bounty hunter to do the job for her. Hell Arlong's reward + 10 Million Advance would have every bounty hunter in East Blue on Arlong's head. Not to mention Elite Hunters and Mercs that can turn fishmen into soup.
I think this episode missed a perfect chance to emphasize that fishmen have bulletproof skin. Honestly, Zeff's shot didn't make me think they were bulletproof since they failed to show the bullet actually hitting the skin-it was kinda unnoticeable at first. Bellemere should've pulled the trigger straight away instead of charging at Arlong first. It's a bit of a wasted opportunity, but what's done is done. Anyway, I lost it at the 'seahorse' comment-I can't! 😂 I've been eagerly waiting for this reaction, and now I can't wait for your take on episode 8. More power to you guys, stay strong and healthy. Love you both! 🫶🏼
Ah, but if you remember her actions in the source material it makes perfect sense why she didn’t fire immediately. As a trained marine she would *know* they have bulletproof skin. So live action Bellemere was attempting to do exactly what manga/anime Bellemere did: shove the barrel in Arlong’s mouth where it could do real damage. Unfortunately she didn’t get as far as her original counterpart. :(
@@HellYeahGaming I see your point. I was actually tempted to mention Bellemere’s bold move in the anime/manga earlier, but I held back, thinking it wouldn't resonate with the Live-action audience. From the blind reactions I’ve seen, some think Bellemere’s action here seems illogical or out of character for an ex-marine, which lessens her cool factor even more. So I thought, since the OPLA writers have already changed a lot of things in this arc, why not use it to compensate for other stuff like this? They didn't even show that Bellemere knew Fishmen come from the Grand Line, so new viewers could just assume that she doesn’t know about fishmen's bulletproof skin either, and it will not really affect the Live-action story. Emphasising the fishmen's bulletproof skin through a notable action, not just having Usopp say it later, would make it more memorable. Just my thoughts, but again, what's done is done 😁 The live-action's still a success, bringing OP to new seas 🥹
It might be the great finale of this show, but the anime has so much more great moments mixed with character growth and slapstick humor than this, much had to be cut. So if i give this Live Action 10 of 10 Live-Action points, i give this ark in the anime 20 of of 20 reat one piece points.
They copied the scene of luffy raising his hands and nami covering her mouth 1 to 1 from the anime/manga and trust me every scene works even better in the anime
She was being tricky that time
"Help me" -> Nami's iconic words in this episode because she really mean it this time
That’s great writing there 🤩
When Zeff said "It's their time", and Garp replies "Like Hell is"
oh, us fans felt it..Garp is an Old man in the game, but he has weight in those words.
As she said “we don’t lie about money on this crew!”
Arlong makes deals for money all the time.
The part you called cheesy is definitely from the anime and VERY iconic
It's also a core of Luffy's character. He tends to fall asleep or stop paying attention during long backstories from people he already decided that he likes.
The reasons don't matter to him. He just wants to helps his friends. He was trying to ham it up intentionally because he picked up that this was a very difficult ask for Nami to make.
For real. If they would have changed it much I would have been mad haha. Can't wait for a few seasons in the future and "The Punch".
I feel like the actor should have look more angry. He didn't sound upset enough here, that's why it fell so weird.
@@randomwatcher8673 he looks just like the anime. Your idea of upset kinda doesn't matter. He looked like luffy
Nami made this deal as a child and with a child’s eyes, she really believed he would honor the deal that she was desperate to make. BTW, such a sweet fur kid, my senior fur kid was sleeping too while I watched the reaction.
its also that she grew up in that situation, there was no one in her life to teach her any different. shes naive ‘cuz she never learned any better
@kerwe3447 true but the anime arlong didn't give trust me either
Thanks! Fur kids make watching anything better ☺️😊
1:16 "I think loyalty means everything to Zoro". Oh you have no idea of what's to come😂
Thriller bark is one it
For Luffy his hat is his most precious treasure and he refuses to let other people touch it, in the anime when Nami does so he shouts at her for doing so.
Looking forward to seeing the rest of the crew 😀
Isn't it exactly half the crew?
@@Lothiril you dont count luffy. we got 4. gonna be half when they meet chopper and it will stay like that for a long while. Franky and Robin join way later on, then brook and jimbei, the tenth right now its not fixed, could be yamato
In the Manga/Anime the Village knew of Nami's Deal but said nothing so they wouldn't be a reason for Nami to stay if she ever felt like running away.
Lawful evil. Haven’t heard that before but like it. Well, hate Arlong for it but still like the phrase haha 🤗
Zorro and Sanjis' reluctant friendship is a series staple, so i've heard
it is. one of my favourite relation among the crew tbh
You have to remember nami was a child who watched her mom get killed. Of course she believed arlong and kept it til the end. Hope.
7:52 Still can't tell if Koby and Helmpeppo are thinking 'that's horrifying' or 'is he going to offer us some?'
Zeff: I still life by the code
Bartender: They are more like guidelines anyway
Your pup sleeping is so adorable
Our filming time is his nap time 😊
"Luffy, help me!" is the most iconic moment of the East Blue Saga, and for many people is the moment they were truly hooked on One Piece.
Nami told the crew that she only joined them to steal the map. Luffy giving her the hat is the ultimate sign that he still trusts her 100%.
🥲
One of the things you learn to love about One Piece is how interconnected so many things are. Meeting and learning of characters, history, events, locations, devil fruits, etc that Oda had spent almost three decades creating and expanding all while pushing the greater story along. Oda is a God-tier storyteller of our generations.
"Luffy.. Help me!" will always hurt so much and also feel so good, cause she finally accept help and, she can still be a strong woman.
Luffy does not care about the past, he cares about the present, and will decide almost immediately if he likes someone or not
the scene where Nami is crying and asks Luffy for help is one of the most iconic scenes from the anime/manga, and they did a brilliant job in the live action with it
the hat is Luffy's treasure, and given to him by Shanks, and he wants to protect it to return it to Shanks eventually; by putting the hat in Nami's care, it shows that Luffy trusts Nami completely, and doesnt care about her past, he knows she is a good person and his friend
@@RageKage987 I think Nami's actress did a fantastic job here tbh, but yeah
I actually liked “of course I will” much better than Luffy just screaming Arlong’s name. It felt a lot less awkward for me personally.
@@ms-literary6320 Luffy says "of course I will" in the anime tho?
Been a fan of one piece for 16yrs now
Best way to put it is that, Luffy doesn’t care about who you were, he cares about who you are.
09:40 They did nerf Namis Mom in the Live Action. Here what happens in the anime: (Spoiler alert for this one episode if u wanna see it for the first time again unspoiled.)
In the anime she surpises Arlong, sends him flying while standing on his chest, her Gun barrel in his mouth ready to blow his brains...
(I’m sorry it was a long time since I saw, I might have missed something but it does go like that)
Oh its on. We'll avenge Nami with this one.
7:33 The age old question - how far would we go for a free meal?
In the Manga/Anime Zoro and Sanji have a huge rivalry between them, always bickering and fighting each other, sometimes even while facing off against enemies.
your puppy is cute and comfy ❤❤❤
According to the credits, Hachi is here, albeit with a massive redesign. He's supposedly one of the guys in the card game.
19:27 The manga and the anime showcase this scene for maximum emotional impact. Cheesy? Yes, but in the series, it's much more powerful.
You did a perfect analysis of Luffy's character
Its fascinating that hollywood tried to push a strong independent woman archetype and always failed miserably.
And here we have a girl boss that's well written and her strongest moment was her asking for help from another individual. Didn't make her any less of a Woman, but portrays her as an actual strong woman that accepts her vulnerability. ❤
Treating women as individuals is always the best way to go.
Arlong would have given the rat the money, but it was the disrespect that changed things.
You guys are so genuine I love your reactions! Please start watching the actual anime after the next episode!
As far as I remember there are only men in Arlong's crew but there are fishwomen.
Slight spoiler for the anime:
When Nami says Luffy doesn't know whats going on and he says "Yeah I don't" that is actually a fact.
Mostly because there's so many weirdos waiting to be introduced in season 2.
the Mickey mouse guy in japanese name means rat....plus he is literally a dirty Rat
please react to the anime version "Nami help me scene". Its one of the most iconic scenes ever, and still chilling to this day
You both were quite accurate regarding the symbolism of the straw hat. Unfortunately, in the adaptation, she approached the situation as if she lacked combat training One more episode to go..❤😂🎉
Do a longer version for the last episode. You should be fine
No context, doesn't know the reason, has actually never seen Arlong up until this point, has no real justification or motivation other than "You made Nami cry and now your face is going into the dirt."
Its not a bad direction but I just personally prefer the original.
Human - gender neutral
Fishman gender neutral
There are Fishman and Merfolk in this world.
Fishman literally are humanoids that have qualities of different marine life and merfolk is basically what you are thinking upper body of humanoid (can look human, can look like fishman) and lower body are fins or tentacles.
Don't worry there are Fishwomen and there are Meremaids and Meremen
Just none of them are thankfully on Arlong's crew
Nami: I promise to never steal again :)
12 years later
Nami: Gimme all your money :)
i know i know, but it's still funny
This isn’t really a spoiler, but yes, there are female Fishmen. There’s also Merfolk and both are a subspecies of each other.
Been waiting for this episode!
In the World of One Piece Marines Ensign and higher can personalize their uniforms.
For Captain Nezumi , "Nezumi" mean Rat in japenese (That's why is like that). And for Nami's mother name "Belle-Mere", Oda use it for a good meaning. In French, "Belle mère" mean step mother for Nami & Nojiko.
Here the link to the same scene of Nami with Luffy in Anime , really good both : Luffy gives his hat to Nami - ruclips.net/video/dM0tpzY8nFc/видео.htmlsi=vSzXJurOaeikml7M
The cast react also to the Nami's scene, ONE PIECE Cast Reacts to Nami's Breakdown : ruclips.net/video/AkGJWK7zJ-I/видео.htmlsi=GtHq0sZl6Pre2RLr
Great react 🎉🎉🎉
fish-women are generally mermaids
My one complaint about season one was actually Zoro. In the anime/Manga, he is 3 parts swords to 2 parts bad ass to 2 parts directionally impaired, 1 part passion and 1 part dumb ass. It kind of feels like they removed the passion and the dumb ass and replaced it with brooding and emo.
19:30
the luffy hat pass off was not so drawn out in manga or anime, they kinda milked it.
Long Story short
Nami is a Treasure as Valuable as the Hat for Luffy
Nami's actress does a phenomenal job during that scene.
Sadly, while Luffy's actor does a great job with Luffy's standard energy, I feel he is a bit lacking in the intensity when Luffy gets serious. I think the real problem though is the director. I feel the slow motion for the hat pass is way too dramatic and unnatural, a moderately fast but firm pass I think would have been better and more natural and without any loss in the weight of the action,
The pose also felt way too much like a child mimicking a scene more than anything else.
Luffy is D. GOAT 💯
jurassic world camp cretaceous reaction
The fishwomen are mermaids, that's why none of them followed the pirates into their journey out of the water.
It might be the great finale of this show, but the anime has so much more great moments mixed with character growth and slapstick humor than this, much had to be cut.
So if i give this Live Action 10 of 10 Live-Action points, i give this ark in the anime 20 of of 20 reat one piece points.
She made the deal as a child and he may wear Mickey mouse ears but he is a rat
Luffy doesn't know about fishing? come on..
if only u knew who luffy really is. (after all those years we just got there in the anime but i wont say more XD
He has the joy of a boy you know.
The fish women are called mermaids.😄
They copied the scene of luffy raising his hands and nami covering her mouth 1 to 1 from the anime/manga and trust me every scene works even better in the anime
Missing the details and not paying attention in the first journey will make your experience of understanding One Piece won't be enjoyable
M not a bot, n first😂
