He really is just the most thoughtful guitarist around - simple melody - then gently into the blues then hits you with stunning harmonies and gospel chords all the while just telling the story of the song.
that was about the best solo piece, I have heard him do yet......the way he works that melody.....that Is what solo playing is all about in my opinion......
Hey Jens, I just downloaded the Tab/Sheet for a transcription someone did of this video from this Patreon page. www.patreon.com/jujumusicedition It's free but you can contribute.
I was born by the river in a little tent Oh, and just like the river I've been running ever since It's been a long, a long time coming But I know a change gon' come, oh yes it will It's been too hard living, but I'm afraid to die 'Cause I don't know what's up there beyond the sky It's been a long, a long time coming But I know a change gon' come, oh yes it will I go to the movie and I go down town Somebody keep telling me don't hang around It's been a long, a long time coming But I know a change gon' come, oh yes it will Then I go to my brother And I say, "Brother, help me please." But he winds up knockin' me Back down on my knees There been times that I thought I couldn't last for long But now I think I'm able to carry on It's been a long, a long time coming But I know a change gon' come, oh yes it will
Oh my god I wish I could sit down with Bill and get him to explain some of those double stop licks he plays. I'm so in love with that sound!!! Me 2 thank you for this Video ! So Beautiful and full of Soul thx thxthx
That is one sweet instrument, arrangements and songs I've ever heard. Bill did an amazing job! Of course starting with a Sam Cooke tune gave him an edge. ;-) My only complaint is the 'artistic' videography. Every time he gets to a good part the camera swings away so you can't see where he puts his fingers. Sure could have picked up a couple of new fingerings. Oh well. It's still playing non stop on my computer. lol.
Look at the strings. I think they look a lot like flatwounds (dark grey color, you can´t see the winds clearly). I think even the picking has some kind of "bomp bomp" sound to it.
Maybe it doesn't sound like flats because it's a tele. That bridge plate delivers a lot of tone. On 1080 and full screen, it's clearly flats, most obvious between the nut and the machine heads. Also, the Mastery bridge is preset for a plain G, so he's doctored his set of flats (if only be one sixth..)
i watched him in london recently and me and my mate thought he could be using flatwounds for the lower strings for that warm dead sound and roundwound for the top three for that tele twang?
It seems to be a TK Smith C.A.R. neck pickup www.tdpri.com/threads/what-pickups-are-in-this-bill-frisell-esquire.880408/ shop.tksmith.net/collections/tk-smiths-electronic-guitar-service/products/c-a-r-pole-piece-pickup
You can really hear the difference in the Gibson scale 24.75"(custom neck) on his Tele...I never thought of that...he's an amazing player...."Hey Honey go grab me my saw saw, tape measure, screwdriver and the kids squire tele...there is something I wanna try.. 😉
how can I play like him????? Urgently need lessons , what is this ?? Is it jazz I just find out about Bill watching Julian Lage videos I can barely pick up a guitar but I can’t stop listening to this type of music, what’s happening to me I was just looking for telecaster videos and now I’m hook to this music I don’t even understand
I know of no other guitarist either living or deceased that’s in his league. Not in the same room, not in the same house. Closest they can get is to stand outside, using their hand over their brow as they attempt to peer through the window.
Hah! Sorta, but he hits the spot sometimes. Although when I saw him live I wanted to punch him in the face really hard after his first set, because it was all of this masturbatory crap he seems to think is his bread and butter. Guess it must be, because he pulled this bullshit for OVER AN HOUR. God it was annoying. Then, miraculously, he actually leaned into his guitar for the second half and almost pulled off some ballsy shit. It was very confusing. I suspect it's probably a combination of his age (no fault of his own) and fucking Berklee. That place fucks with peoples' heads. I went there, I know. All you Berklee motherfuckers know what I'm talking about too. It's so painfully obvious who drank the Kool Aid. There's so many cats that went through Berklee relatively uscathed, but just as many psychic casualties have been incurred. Berklee is a good school, but it's somewhat of a tar pit for the less stubborn. Their method encourages (unintentionally) less original and strong musicians to substitute noodling for ideas. It's subtle, but so toxic. I bet most guitar players in particular can hear the Berklee sound. It's a dog whistle. Frisell, to my ears, has been affected by his time at Berklee. NONE of the cats from the New School have this same issue. Or guys/gals from NEC, Rochester, Maybe Julliard?, Texas A&M, etc.. I love Berklee but there's some bad juju there. It takes a strong mind to escape untouched. And are the elevators in the Boylston building still fucked? The west ones were a crap shoot! I had to crawl out of them a few times! It's gotta be so much better now. I did go there over twenty yrs ago.. That all being said, my time waiting for Baboian"s lab outside Gary Burton's office door were always cool and amazing. His playing was hypnotic. I loved hearing him work ideas out while waiting for our guitar lab to start. Dude has good tone. So, agreed, he can get bland and annoying. But he does have mad skills. Wish he'd use them more..
Ron Kopald Yea, personally I just think he’s a good musician who knows his theory and can play, apart from that he isn’t really fun to watch. I never went to university so I don’t understand anything you said about Berkeley, something about drugs I’m guessing. I’m an electrician and I run my own small company, hopefully I will retire and soon and let my guys bring in the bread for me very soon.
@@ronkopald yeah whatever.... Its just personal taste. Bon Jovi makes me want to dig out my own eyes but I don't go on comments section to whine about it. If you've got nothing good to say then do feel free to keep your opinion to yourself.
Every note Frisell plays means something, there’s not a wasted moment. A truly inspiring and original guitarist.
He really is just the most thoughtful guitarist around - simple melody - then gently into the blues then hits you with stunning harmonies and gospel chords all the while just telling the story of the song.
As good as I've heard in 75 years....what a beautiful cover ...sound and play...thanks for posting...Ye Olde Coach
So soulful. He seems his playing is responding to itself, with the bass notes.
This sounds simple until you realize the perfection of that sound
Beautiful guitar work with so much subtlety, and "side conversations". Letting things ring out, whilst responding. Bravo!

Indeed! :)
the harmony is sparse,...he's a pro at filling in, with a tune like this......

I know! Jan Jarkut made it :) Very nice of him!
@@dasai9754 Thank you so much for sharing this link!!!! So so helpful!
It's always great to hear Bill at FJ. His playing is always inspiring, but particularly solo.
Couldn't agree more!
Yesss
I remember when my dad took me to see Bill Frisell live near Cleveland. What a cool show. And soothing to the ear and soul indeed.
Very beautiful, with class and feeling

Magic fingers .. even without these guitars and their effects the sound would be just as magnificent. Viva el sonido Frisell !!
I bet his toes would even sound good
Going to travel and see Bill here soon.. Its been ten years since i saw him.. His playing is so spiritual, Huge influence of mine..
Amazing as per usual. I love his tone and modified telecaster.

Gregory Tardy! One of the best saxophonists of this generation.
Sweet, sweet tone.
Forget all my previous hero's your my one & only
Holy shit this is magical
How could anyone give this a thumbs down.....🤔
Can he do no wrong?!
Very beautiful playing, such a beautiful Telly and a tribute to their great versatility. I wonder what the neck p/u is?
love it. ✌😎 nifty guitar
Bill Frisell is the "Peter Green of jazz guitar"

wow
WOW
Fantástico!
I love this telecaster. Looks like he is playing flatwounds. I´ll try that!
Robin Taylor definitely doesn't sound like flat wounds
Look at the strings. I think they look a lot like flatwounds (dark grey color, you can´t see the winds clearly). I think even the picking has some kind of "bomp bomp" sound to it.
Robin Taylor you might be right. When the zoom in by the nut it kind of looks flatwound. I might need the try flatwound on my tele.

Wow... how does one learn to play like THAT!??
Whats that neck pickup?

What is the make and the caliber of the rope he uses on his guitar?
Little taste of Heaven....

If that’s a solo, then why do I hear a horn section and a choir?
I really like this comment. I think it might be because he did as he was playing.
So it's a tele with a Gibson scale length?
Correct
いいね!
I'm guessing all the mods were to make it into a soul guitar rather than a surf guitar...?
This song minor which means sadness and sorrow
No it's in D-Major
Bill is great, but this amp has an owesome tone!
what amp?? several behind him....
I found it rather bland and annoying.

WTF are you babbling about?
Frisell is an American master and you are a babbling idiot.
thats the frissel thing.....

I wish a change would come and make Bill Frisell's playing creatively daring and sonically fresh again. This is flat out boring.
