  • Welp, we've finally rounded out the main cast here as we take a look into Angel, otherwise known as "the director". I wanted to save this one for last as since she is the director of the Big O, getting to know the other characters will give us insight into her character. It will also see how she fits into her own production and how her art can tell us about her life and personal growth. And of course...
    All properties shown here belong to their respective owners. "Big O" is property of Bandai Namco Filmworks (Sunrise) and was created by designer Keiichi Sato and director Kazuyoshi Katayama

      I'm honored my explanation is so esteemed! Thank you for the watch, I always found Angel's odd place in the plot of one I wanted to figure out and I'm glad I've figured something of it.

    Big O takes heavy inspiration from the Batman animated series. For starters look at the animation itself. Not to mention, Roger Smith has a butler who acts as a support character for billionaire type antics and vigilanteeism, and Dorothy is Roger’s Robin.

      Only on the surface I agree but it's essence The Big O something else. Way deeper.

    By no means am I asking you to revisit The Big O characters as you have done a splendid job as is. But I would like to mention Jason Beck, he is a significant character as he is Smiths rival and foil, both live outside the Domes and have their own code of rules. Beck is also emblematic of some of the influences and themes that went into the writing of The Big O. Beck is clearly based on the Lupin III series, like how Big O takes influence from Giant Robo and the enemy robots and monsters of the week take influence from the Ultraman Kaiju. Beck might not be very deep as a character, but I think he still has his place among the cast.

      I opted not to do a video on Beck in this initial run of videos because I felt he was more of a fun side character than one with a ton of depth, though you do bring up interesting points about him, and I might look into both Beck and Gorden rosewater in future one off additions to the Big O Retrospective Series.

    why is the reset a brighter one?

    • @obscureanimememories6697
      @obscureanimememories6697  Год назад +5

      So the Big O is a story told by Angel and Angel is obviously going through some personal turmoil. We see this in her character development, going from sort of confident to distraught and we also see this in the world of the Big O which is just kind of depressing (this is important to note as art tends to reflect the mode of who ever made it, so a depressing setting could indicate some depression on the side of the creator). As Angel's turmoil worsens, we see Angel, as the 'director' want to scrap the whole project, to give up. This is her darkest moment. She is convinced not to however and is even convinced to give it another go. She is reminded of both her own value as a person and her own abilities. This is why the reset is brighter, because the creative force behind it has changed. Angel's original creation was an outlet for turmoil, but now, having been encouraged to go on, it can serve as an outlet for renewed hope and personal growth. This can even be seen in the shot of the reset, as Paradigm city now seems a much more brighter (literally and figuratively) place.

      @@obscureanimememories6697 Ok, so the fact that it goes back to the beginning was proof the negotiation was successful. But basically we just assume it will be better. At least she's trying to make it better. Also I think it's noteworthy that the book wasn't finished, but Gordon asked her to finish it and then it gets finished.

      @@AntiDoctor-cx2jd I would add on that the city itself is in a better state (a clear note from a steel plate run over by Rogers car instead of a brutal clang) and the circumstances are clearly different, as we see Dorothy and Angel are already present when Roger reaches his home. If we (I think reasonably) assume the point of reset is the first episodes opening, then he wouldn't have met Dorothy or Angel yet, so how could they be there? Their roles and the thrust of (at least the opening of the Narrative) are changed, to something that would logically have them introduced in episode one as supporting cast that already know Roger. Perhaps the events of Roger dealing with Dorothy 1-2 would be a flashback, and Angel is a contact for Roger within Paradigm corporation in this iteration. (to throw out an example that seems fitting to the setup of the series.)
      The intention, as best I can tell, is to suggest that the general outline of the plot we saw in Big O is going to play out, but with a more positive spin on things. The entire mess of Big Venus would either be repurposed or dropped, leaving Alex Rosewater as the main antagonistic force. We even know roughly how that turns out (Final Stage to the chest of Big Fou) from what we've seen. Because the Director is in a better emotional state, things that turned out at best bitter sweet would likely be shifted to a more positive outcome in this version of events.
      The answer to the events of 40 years ago might ultimately be resolved by adopting Rogers stance at the end of the story that "Ultimately, it isn't worth obsessing over when we have a future to look towards." With Alex mirroring this by showing the same stance without a mature mindset. (Alex doesn't care because Alex is obsessed with control of the now. Vs Roger doesn't care because he's decided to move on with his life.) This would resolve the mystery that in the series we saw was answered with "The Director never wrote that, so it never existed." without the need for the Director at all, and to me seems like the logical adjustment to make to the ending.
      That is what I've come to believe anyway.

      @@Sorain1 This is what I love about fiction that's open to interpretation. The director may be the one writing the story but the viewer is the one interpreting the story. If you're just given the answer then you won't understand the problem and thus the answer won't mean as much if anything at all. If you're made to find the answer for yourself it will mean much more and might reveal something about yourself. Lies come from people just as truth does. Someone else's truth may not be your truth. I find seeking truth for one's self is better. Then if you find other's who hold the same trust you can trust more, believe and be more excepting maybe. Reasons why I love The Big O.
