What I find funny about classical pianists who start to learn jazz, is that when they learn a jazz piece, they start to play it aaaaalways the same way. Haha.

Hey Mariya! Love this video!! I am new to your channel and this is right in my wheel house because I was where you are now. I had two amateur musicians as parents, so you probably know the drill...up at 5:00am to study piano Monday to Friday and then my weekly lesson with the conductor of the orchestra they met in (his instrument was piano). My mother was classically aligned (her instrument was violin) and my father jazz. She taught me to read music and he tried to unteach me. In the language of Jazz we might call this playing by ear. So I spent time in a darkened bathroom practicing my trombone (his fretless instrument, so I really had to train my ear). Anyhoo, in the same vein as Keith Jarrett, I love both listening to and playing Classical and Jazz. I won''t spoil the ending and your discovery of what lies ahead. I am very excited about your journey and can't wait for the next step. Cheers!

Hi panedole! I looked into it and found the Pianoforall course. There are a lot of learn piano fast courses going around, and they mostly focus on playing chords, pop songs and “sounding like a pro fast.” However, it does look like they have a section of the course dedicated to reading music easily, which I am all for! Nice vid, Mariya! I'm a classical and jazz pianist, and always stress to aspiring jazzers how important the ii - V - I is! It's the backbone of jazz, and, as you know, Levine does a good job of introducing it in "The Jazz Piano Book." The ii - V - I gets really interesting when you use two hand voicings, which is a whole other art. Levine's "Jazz Theory" goes into even more depth than "TJPB," though there is some overlap between the two books. You should also check out the excellent "Jazz Theory Resources" Volume I and II by Bert Ligon, which focus on harmony and improv, and his "Comprehensive Technique for Jazz Musicians," which focuses on constructing improv lines. Great book!
The Jamey Aebersold books -- especially the transcribed comping one that Hal Galper did -- are useful. The Galper book "Body and Soul" is really good for learning rootless two-hand voicings. Then, of course, is the slew of Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Art Tatum, etc. transcription books from Hal Leonard and others. You can practice your sight-reading with them, while learning their arrangements -- hey, two birds... : )

Great video! I am having a hard time practicing the 2-5-1 progression in all keys as described in Mark Levines book (Im kind of a beginner as well...). He suggests that you should play the progression in all keys using the circle of fifths. But I dont know exactly how to do this efficiently on the keys. How did you approach that part of the book? Any easy way of shifting from say the 2-5-1 in the key of C to the 2-5-1 in the key of F, etc? I just feel like I'm jumping around on the keys and it does not feel efficient :/
    Thanks in advance!

Careful with the order in the Levine books. Chapter 3 jumps to Phrygian, which is a bit out of the ordinary. Other than that, great book but mostly when you’re already an intermediate piano player.

Would you recommend this book for someone with no background in piano at all?
And, did you consider Mark Levine's other book "The Jazz Theory" over the one you used? Do you think "The Jazz Piano Book" is better then "The Jazz Theory Book"? or maybe more practical?
Does this book also gets into the theory of the things or just exercises?

I have only worked with the Jazz Piano Book, but from what I understand about both the Theory and Piano Books, they are often used in universities to teach jazz in an easy-to-understand manner. I think it’s best to have some sort of piano background to make your experience as smooth as possible!

On Amazon I read this book is for advanced musicians, would you recommend any other books/courses I can take before trying this method? Also, does the book tell u to practice the exercises u do for homework and give u the tunes to play or do u do that yourself?
    Thank you in advanced.

    • @WithMariya
      @WithMariya  3 года назад +3

Hey thanks so much for watching! Your call... one approach could be to take the "traditional" route and listen to lots of jazz pianists and develop your improv skills that way, or if you want to follow the classical-to-jazz route then you could pick up a book like the Elementary Rudiments of Music by Barbara Wharram (my personal favourite for advanced students) and touch up on your theory before heading over to the Jazz Piano Book!
That being said, hopefully my tutorials would help explain the confusing parts of the book (because it can be intense for me as well), and you can always ask me questions along the way! The book includes lots of exercises and tunes, as well!

Thanks a lot for sharing this, I was studding music for 10 years, pure classic but I felt in love with jazz by listening all day for years.
I developed a deep ear understanding about jazz harmony, chord progressions etc.. But I wasn't really knowing whats going on consistently so I could barely play any song by ear but I had a very hard time looking for a chord that it is actually playing on my mind, on the piano.
I have never used american chord writting. My entire learning was on do re mi fa sol la si do, so I it really hard for me to change my mind to A B C D E F G so do is no C. That feels messed.
Never touched jazz on my entire career. I didn't take a single class about it because the were not offered at all. All I had is a very clear "ear" understanding of it.
Lastly I feel I need to refresh my entire learning so I stopped to play piano for almost 3 years.
So no I feel I can do a fresh start to learn jazz from 0.
But from what point shoud I start? I know classical harmony starting from 0 should be boring I will quit.
This video gives me a clear path so thanks you very much to show your own path. It is very difficult to find videos like this.

Wow, thank you so much for your meaningful comment 🙏 I relate to what you're saying because I always loved to listen to jazz, but when I would go to the piano, I didn't know where to start! I put off learning from this book for 3 years because I felt like it was too advanced for me, but finally got the courage to get started last summer ✊🤗 Comments like this one remind me why I am making these videos: for YOU! Happy to have you on this journey ❤️Let's do this together!

I read all the comments in this thread and other jazz related videos. What strikes me is this elitism and almost the sense of superiority of those who believe in playing by ear. One has to remember that some people need structure in their learning! If the lack of spontaneity precludes playing jazz, it means that there is no hope for someone like me and my attempts (including signing up for a jazz piano college course) will end up in failure (at least in the eye of “real” jazz musicians).

Thank you for this comment, Michael!! I find that many seasoned/experienced jazz players get caught up in recommending what helps them further down the line instead of what helped them right at the beginning ✨ Maybe that’s where the disconnect comes from 🤷‍♀️

How did this go in the end? To me what you're trying to do seems impossible, if you don't have any experience in jazzing up tunes. The Levine book's examples have layers of separate "tricks" already baked in them, and frankly, this seems like trying to learn everything in one go. Which just doesn't work. In my opinion, things should be learned and digested one at a time, each trick and skill building upon and adding to things you already know well. If you leave out the pre-written notes, can you come up with all that stuff yourself? Can you even list all the things there are in the examples? Can you take Happy Birthday and jazz it up, after studying with the Levine book? I think learning jazz should start from learning to play simple pop, folk, blues tunes by ear and then gradually learning tricks to jazz them up. Improvise your own progressions, play rhythm, play melodies. Take a melody and improvise a chord progression for it 10 times in a row without repeating yourself. No fancy chord/scale stuffing, that doesn't count as being a different progression. 3-4 note chords.

Hi, thank you so much for your comment!! As you might have seen in some of my other replies on this video, I have always found that playing by ear is not my strong side, and therefore an impossible place to start (as you said, it's best to start with something you already know, and build on that). If you check out the rest of the series, you can see me playing more by ear now that I have built more of a theoretical foundation and a better understanding of jazz piano!

You wanna learn jazz, mariah? The trick is to not try!! Go up to the piano and hit it until it makes a sound you like. Keep an open mind. Dont bother learning structured chords and tricks because that will convey a sense of robotocism and routine in your playing which is antithetical to the roots of jazz. If you really want to learn jazz, listen to jazz music, be inspired and then go up to your piano with an open heart and hit it until you like how it sounds. Its about being free. Listen to sun ra, bill evans maybe, bit of fela kuti or ahmaad jamal.

Hi Louis, thank you for your comment! I totally understand where you're coming from, and this is the sort of advice I got from a lot of my peers when I first started to show interest in learning to play jazz. Coming from a classical background where we only allowed to play the notes that are on the page, it can be hard to break out of that mindset. That's why books like these are AMAZING to give us that push and confidence to get started! To each his own, and I am so glad that we have both found what works for us!
P.S. My name is spelled Mariya, not Mariah :)

I have studying jazz for years now and I thing you are starting in the wrong end. You shouldn’t use a book in the beginning cause that’s not what jazz is about. Start whit listening A LOT to the greats and get some ideas on how to build your solo now good luck.

I grew up listening to jazz trio, brass band and piano music, so it was always very near and dear to my heart. You can’t learn jazz properly from a book, you need a jazz mentor/teacher. Jazz has a fair amount of folk music in it like blues, early swing music, etc. Folk music is passed from one musician to another. Listen and transcribe recordings and solos. Then keep listening to more and more be-bop and blues. When it comes to jazz, a book shouldn’t be the main learning tool.

Hey Mariya, I'm sorry to be a wet blanket, but this is the first video of yours that I've watched, and it did not impress me - and I'll explain why to give you what I hope is viewed as constructive criticism. Here we go! First - You seem to just dive in without really explaining what you're doing, and you rapidly move through different topics which didn't really seem to provide any knowledge or help to a prospective viewer. Secondly - Your piano is grossly out of tune, and it was almost painful to listen to. I couldn't really appreciate the sound of what should have been beautiful chord voicings because of the dissonance resulting from the poor tuning. Third(ly) - and this is more trivial, but the room you're recording in has poor acoustics. You might consider using some curtains, or blankets or other materials to cut down on the reverberations, and/or consider using a high quality microphone to get better sound quality from the instrument. Hope this is helpful to you.

@@WithMariya OK - Great. Like I said, it was the first video of yours I had watched - so just got unlucky and picked "not your best". I like your new instrument. I just got a Yamaha MODX after being relentlessly pestered by the guys I play with to upgrade from my previous keyboard. I was originally drawn to this video because you were studying jazz, and specifically the Jazz Piano book my Mark Levine. I have discovered a really great jazz piano teacher on youtube - Tony Winston ruclips.net/channel/UCBdQdwEq4dlydfh35K_F8TQ . He really does a good job, especially around the topic of improvising/soloing over jazz progressions. Thanks for taking the time to reply. Cheers!
