We invented Imperial. We only use metric when we need to dumb things down for the French.

Although the early "French" Franks named Britain Great because they came across the channel from Brittany and named it the bigger island "Great Britain" but The Pub Landlord is meant to be a patriotic English prat; he knows his stuff!
Sorry to disappoint. When we joined the European Union, back in the 70's we were asked to use Euros instead of the British pound. We were also told to change to the metric system - which Napoleon devised. Our Government tried, but the population carried on using the British Imperial System. For the reasons he stated in this video. It's better. However, we have now learned to use both and have become skilled in mixing them all up together in our daily lives ... just because we can. We buy a litre of milk in the supermarket, but a pint of beer in the pub. We measure distances in miles and our cricket pitches are still measured as 'one chain' - which is 22 yards. I buy goods in £ sterling and weigh food in pounds and ounces, and myself in stones (14lbs), pounds and ounces, but petrol (gas) for the car, in litres... and on it goes.

We use both imperial and metric in the UK.
The very fact the UK refuses to use Kilometres as its measure for travel and all signs are in miles pretty much sums it up.... I would never say it is 24 Kilometres from say my home town Dundee to Perth, No I say it is 20 miles
You assumed right. Officially Britain has switched to metric (as has US btw). But Britain is too stuck in traditions so they use them both as they please.
Americans confuse us with Europe, which is across the sea from us.

Britain is still part of Europe.
I really hope we are in Europe as Scotland qualified for the European Championships in Germany this month and I have tickets and Helen it is not a sea it is the English Channel or La Manche si vous preferez

The fact that Imperial is called Imperial should give a clue about where it came from 😂
There is a divergence in a couple of measurements since the 1860s, when the British pint was changed from 16 to 20oz, which also made a British gallon larger than the original Queen Anne imperial system (as taken to the US by the pilgrims). At the same time the original 2000lb ton (redesignated as the 'short ton') was changed to 2240lb AKA the 'long ton'.
The UK is mostly metric, but hangs on to imperial for certain things and many people operate in different standards for different things and then struggle to convert it. For example, someone might know their weight in stone and pounds and not kilograms, but then proceed use kilograms when talking about the weight of other things, like a car, but have zero clue about a conversion to imperial. We use miles, mph and mpg but we buy fuel in litres... go figure how that makes sense.
However, the UK uses Imperial. The US actually uses USCU, customary units and not imperial. USCU is a cut down and refined imperial with less legacy baggage (no barleycorns or furlongs for example) and some different measurements. Yyour gallon is different to our gallon, which would make our MPG reading on a car different too. Lots of stuff like that. A lot of core compatibility, but you can't take it for granted.
We still use pints (20 ounces) for beer. I have a bottle of milk in the fridge which says it contains 568 millilitres, which by my reckoning is a pint. Despite petrol being priced in litres, most people that I know buy it in multiples of £10`s worth, and consumption is always in miles per gallon.
Our pints in the US is only 16 ounces. Qe are getting ripped off!

Yeah great humour, thanks. As others have said we do use both systems. It does work. Personally I use a formula to convert to imperial. I was born in 1958 and like to see things in true proportion .😉😉
We are a real mish mash of metric and imperial. Beer and milk in pints. Height is feet and inches. Weight in stones and pounds. Long distances in miles. However, i measure shorter distances in metres and cms (this may differ depending on generations), i weigh ingredients in grams, i buy all other fluids other than milk and beer in litres and ml. I buy my fuel in litres (but measure the consumption in miles per gallon). I measure temperature in C (although im of an age where F was used concurrently when I was a kid). As i said, depending on the generation, these things may vary.
Yeah - cooking and baking ingredients are better weighed in grams because they're easier to divide and multiply. If you want to cut an eight pounds three ounce piece of pastry into half it takes so long to work out what each part should weigh that it would be quicker to walk to the supermarket and buy whatever it is you're trying to make.
We use both systems of measurement but are officially metric, imperial is being phased out more and more, we might be at or at least almost be at the point now where more Brits are alive who don't know the imperial system, than do.
The US foundation of law, religion, rights,weghts and measures is all from Britain. Even the US constitution copied and pasted some of our laws. That the US flag is STILL 2/3 British.. the 13 large stripes are from the Grand Union Flag of British America. So even today you all have a flag that is 1/3 American. Even the Hawai state flag has the Union flag on it still. Really you Americans could merge them both, youll have a union jack instead of stars Good upload. Enjoy your content.

Looking into it now. Is it around 3 minutes? That is what I've found.
The UK officially runs on the metric system but in reality it has and uneasy mix of metric and imperial. Pint of beer but a two litre of coke, millimeters and centimeters, but miles to a place and mph. I think we just did it to confuse Europeans AND Americans.
It is mostly to confuse the French.
