I have often complained about the cost of drumsticks in general... but now I have a much better understanding of the detail that goes into Vater's manufacturing process. I found the information about back blade and tone analysis particularly interesting. I haven't bought a nylon tipped stick in years because tips often do come off (followed by damaged heads if your not paying attention). But everything in this video makes a lot of sense. I'm definitely going to buy a few pairs of Vater sticks.
Now it makes sense to me about why Vater's sticks feel so much more solid and tend to be more durable than any other sticks that I've used. I think it is the higher moisture content. Vics and Pro-Marks seem brittle in comparison. Also, the Stewart Copeland signature sticks are perfect for me.
My favorite stick of choice. The Virgil Donati Assault 2B model changed my drumming life when the line first came out. My hands were finally at home. Thank you Vater!
Vater are the best for me. Been playing them for a little over three years and look forward to playing Vater the rest of my life. Thank You Vater so much. I'm proud of the Super Jazz Sugar Maple. Those do the job for me and allow me to express myself and I can count on them and they feel absolutely great on my hands. Thank You again Vater Percussion Family😊
I have been using Vater sticks and brushes for years now. The sticks are impeccable and each pair I pick up feels exactly like the last. For the entire time I have used Vater sticks, I have probably had ONE stick that I would consider to be faulty and broke on me. Compare that to other stick manufacturers where I could buy a few blocks of sticks and have several bad sticks in the bunch. I believe this is a testament to Vater's dedication to the craft and quality control of their product. Thank you Vater for supplying me with sticks that allow me to express myself to my fullest potential!!
alot of other companies have stolen ideas from vater mainly vic firth. this is why i love vater, original and highest quality, and in my opinion should be used by more people.
Every drum stick manufacturer uses essentially the same machines, and the same processes to make their sticks. What ideas do you think Vic Firth and "alot[sic] of other companies" have "stolen" from Vater?
I recently picked up a pair of Vater 7A Manhattan wood tip drum sticks. These sticks are very responsive and fast in my hands, just what I have been looking for to bring out the sound I want from my cymbals and drums. I like them so much that I ordered three more pairs. Thank you Vater!
All I know is this - I play in a cover band doing 3 1.5 hour sets every Friday or Saturday night and my Vater 5B's have reduced my hand fatigue, the tips in my experience NEVER CHIP OFF and my pair of sticks last the entire 3 plus hours!!! I always get a great matched pair, the feel is off the hook and aside from that, it just feels good to be part of a company that has the drummes best interest in mind. I can't thank you enough Vater!!!
I had been using vic firths for about 3 years when I started doing gig stuff, then I went to go buy some more but the shop had no 5a VF's so I tried the Los Angeles 5A's and I haven stuck with Vater for the last 5 years... Superb quality
Vater really is the best most straight/true stick I have ever used, and I've used many brands. Once I got my hands on their 1A it felt and played perfect! Nylon:VH1AN L 17" D .590" L 43.18cm D 1.50cm
My stick of choice for many years! There have been several models from Vater that I've used for a variety of styles and gigs, including jazz, pop, rock, country and others. Since I need to be 100% comfortable with the stick in my hands to have complete control over dynamics and tone, I have used Vater which always provide me with that exceptional feel and sensitivity. For many years, my mainstay sticks have been the Manhattan 7A and more recently the Super Jazz Maples...which feel wonderful and sound incredible on cymbals. The maples have the lightness to be sensitive but the solidness to be used in louder music without fear of breakage. Studio models are also exceptional! Btw, breakage has never been a problem with Vaters! I'm not a heavy hitter but will usually use my sticks long past their prime and they still feel and sound good! They are rock solid performers in every way with a vast variety of models to suit any hand size, style & preference!
As a Vater enodrsee I have nothing but praise for the product. Consistently good quality. I've never had a duff pair. I use Piccolo Sugar Maple sticks. They are the business - the best balanced sticks I have ever used. Hardly any shock through the shaft. Fact! May Vater go from strength to strength.
Vater rocks. If it weren't for seeing sevendust live and catching one of Morgan Rose's sticks, I probably wouldn't have even thought about Vater. Keep up with the awesome stick crafting guys.
I used Vic Firth for years when I first started playing because that was all my local music store carried so I never tried anything else. I used to break sticks pretty frequently and I never found a pair that felt like it was the perfect stick for me. I ended up going to see Mike Johnston at a clinic and he had just released his signature sticks. I bought a pair and they felt perfect, but then I also noticed I was no longer breaking sticks left and right and I've been using that model ever since (recently got rebranded to the Sugar Maple 9A, I was relieved to hear Vater was going to keep making them) Thanks for the great sticks Vater!
Frequency-matching these sticks is something I, and many other viewers, would have NEVER guessed about this process! It's no wonder why so many great drummers are dedicated to your product! Great product, AWESOME post!! #Instagood
I have used and loved VATER drumsticks for 25yrs, started with 5A,wood tips. After being in a touring band and needing fresh sticks quite often i began using vater 3A fatback wood ips and occasionally 8A wood tips. There is a specific model Vater makes that are simply gigantic, and dangerous, hah ha-Morgan Rose tree trunk timbale type, indestructable and fearsome, they will last centuries, and paper thin cymbals cringe when they leave stick bags, huge.but 3A vaters are the best.
Ordered a few Vater sets. Am a new drummer. Chris Layton loves/uses them I and I love SRV and Double Trouble so will give them a go. Currently have a few other brands and am still looking to find my way and see what sticks. 😃 (fit)
Proud user of the Vater 5A L.A American Hickory it never lets me down and my band definitely appreciate the speed and bounce I receive especially for our genre :P
I've purchased a few different Vater sticks. I love the 7a nylon Manhattans. They hold up well and they play and feel like a bigger stick because of the balance feeling a little forward and quite durable. I actually use these for rock with alot of Ride hitting just awesome. The 5a LA sticks are also great and more durable than any other 5a stick that I have used. I like the front heaviness on these giving you a nice feeling with every hit. Save money and load up on Vater sticks. I feel they're more durable than the other competitors out there and these are $2 to $8 a pair cheaper! Play and buy smart!
I'm digging the Los Angeles 5A's playing big band and straight ahead combo. Forward heavy. Very balanced and comfortable. Couple bucks less than Vic's.
I use the Vater Piccolo model- the best maple stick I've ever used. Always straight, pitch paired, very consistent. They produce a very nice ride cymbal sound for jazz, and seem to last for ages before eventually chipping on the tips. I lightly sand off the rough edges, apply a little clear nail polish, and they're good to go. Love 'em!
This is really cool to see. I really appreciate how in depth you guys go to get the best quality sticks, especially the rolling. I've never had an issue with Vater sticks being warped. Back before I knew what good drumsticks to buy were, I went to my local Sam Ash and asked for 1 pair of sticks to do everything from drum set to concert snare playing. They gave me a pair of Vater 5B sticks with the Sam Ash logo and I used that pair for 2 and a half years for everything before the tips started to split. Now I'm a fan of the acorn 5A and 5B, as well as the LA 5A and fatback 3A. Gotta get my hands on a pair of the maple and hickory Mike Johnston sticks though!!
it's cool that an actual person/owner, narrates the vid. you watch some tours and the people have no clue what happens in their own factory...this was cool, I'll have to grab a set! good job dude
Hi, Alex. In case you haven't figured it out: Maple is much lighter than hickory, so you are able to play soft and from my experience a lot faster. Hickory is much more dense and is therefore heavier and have more punch. Because hickory is more dense the stick last a lot longer than maple. Which sticks you should use depends on what you play and the situation. Hope that helped :-)
I've been playing Vater since around 2000. Been using the 5A Nude since 2006, and I believe I was the first in Western Canada to have them. I won't use anything but Vater.
i am one of the harder hitting drummers. i always had problems with sticks breaking but vater sticks hold up the longest for me, thanks guys. i use the hickory 5A nylon tip.
On my 16 yrs playing drums the last 3 ones used Vater drumsticks (5B) and are just the best, but on durability they´re just on a completly new level of quality, no other drumsticks i tryed received so much punishment for so long and when finally got some real fatigue them even didnt cracked or broke completly, actually costed alot of work to actually finishing them off, is just incredible how the wood structures are selected and procesed to get such level of quality on durability and feeling, this brand got my respect and favoritism, hope they keep that up. PD: srry for the english mess.
I have a pair of vaters but 2 pairs of Vic firths. I’ve only been playing for a year my allegiance changes sometimes. Sometimes I am like oh Vic firth is the one but then I play the vaters and I’m like these are the ones. It just goes back and forth. I hope I can find my stick soon.
Vater Chad Smith Funkblasters. The best sticks I've ever held in my hands. Vater is THE best stick company. I don't care who uses Vic Firth, Vater beats them hands down. Best quality sticks I've ever owned after trying Vic Firth, Pro-Mark, Zildjian, and Regal Tip. I love Vater.
i went with sticks from a bunch of other manufactors: paiste, zildjian, vic firth, promark ... best for me - VATER sticks!! 5B and best of all sticks XD-5B (absolute versatile and durable and pleasure to play with!) hands down on Vater Sticks! keep up the awesome work!
Love this video, it really shows how much care goes into the sticks. In high school, had a pair of Vater 5Bs as one of the few pairs I frequently used in my stick bag with the Sam Ash logo for 2 and a half years, they held up super well before the tips started splitting a bit. I've never been super picky about staying with brands except for cymbals, and I've played lots of sticks from many manufacturers but I got back into Vater last summer after seeing Jay Postones from TesseracT, one of my favorite drummers, start using Vater. I picked up a few pairs and then I checked out the full lineup at PASIC this past year. I think the 5B is one of my favorites to use, but I'll use the Acorn 5A or LA 5A for lighter stuff, as well as the 3A. I remember seeing you guys had a blue painted grip stick that I'm not seeing widely available anymore, wonder if it's still being made. The one thing I will say is that of all the sticks I've used, Vater is the only company where I've never had an issue with sticks not being straight, that higher moisture content keeps it strong. With other manufacturers I feel like I have to use a 2B to get the right weight for some heavier stuff but I prefer the feel of a slightly thinner stick, Vater's 5B gives the sturdy feel with slightly less diameter which I like. I gotta check out the classic series next time I go to a store just to compare the 5B, since most manufacturers use .595 as their measurement and I want to see how the Vater ones compare at that diameter. You guys have been making sticks for the longest out of your competitors, you've really created a great product that's been perfected. I look forward to playing with Vater sticks more frequently this summer now that I have more time, see you guys at PASIC!!
If I ever move to MA. Please hire and teach me how to make drumsticks. I'm autistic but can learn many things.I know, it's an important job to make all those sticks and I love to play the drums. I really like my Chad Sexton sticks. He is one of my favorite drummers.Thank you
Been using Pro-Mark for the past 4 years but excited to try Vater. Happy to see if they standup to pro mark since nothing has... BTW if your a new drummer I suggest a 5A and hickory wood. It's the normal or "original"
Forester here, just watching to see what species of wood you use. Hickory makes sense. I was thinking it might be ash, which is actually the preferred species for baseball bats, not sugar maple. The loss of ash due to the exotic pest emerald ash borer has put the baseball bat industry into a quandary as to what species can replace the same properties ash provides.
I don't get why more drummers in general don't use Vater. I bought a case of them in 1984 from a small music store in Virginia that was their "store" brand. I still have 2 pairs left. I use 2B so they probably last longer, but their as straight as the day I bought them. They actually make cheaper drums sound better. The balance is amazing , the nylon tips never fall off. I just keep buying more.
i don't know if you guys will read this, but i have used alot of Vater sticks, they are awesome, i've used vic firth, promark and other sticks, your sticks are really durable and i love them!, just wanted to ask if some day you could do the "universal" stick a little longer from 16' to 16.5' that would be amazing! :D
Never heard about Vater before, exept in German language where it means father. You told that you use 120 sand paper. That’s very coarse. Perhaps the large rpm makes it smooth. Do you have 7A? Then I could test your stick if it is available here in Finland.
Used to be a promark player but the quality and consistency has got worse and worse over the years. Tried the fatback 3A's and never looked back! Vater Quality, consistency and durability is far superior in my opinion than the other brands! Keep up the good work guys!
I really wanna try out a pair of Vater's Recording or Session sticks. I play a lotta styles of music - everything from jazz to rock to hard rock to Latin American musics to metal - so I figured that with names like Recording and Session that they'll be useful for multiple styles of music.
I have used literally every brand of drumstick out there and I’m a hard hitter I would go throw about three pairs of sticks a week I grab myself a pair or vater 2b and it’s been 6 months with them and they haven’t broke yet
After watching this I’ve never been more proud to play Vater drum sticks
I have often complained about the cost of drumsticks in general... but now I have a much better understanding of the detail that goes into Vater's manufacturing process. I haven't bought a nylon tipped stick in years because tips often do come off (followed by damaged heads if your not paying attention). But everything in this video makes a lot of sense. I'm definitely going to buy a few pairs of Vater sticks.
I have tried em all and Vater are the best out there..... Fusion model for me
After many years of trying different drumsticks I found Vater-Blazer and now they are the only sticks I use. Brilliantly balanced, amazing!
Went to school with Ronnie Ronnie in the seventies in norwood Ma
I usually use Vic firths but I will definitely give vater a try!
My favorite stick of choice. The Virgil Donati Assault 2B model changed my drumming life when the line first came out. My hands were finally at home. Thank you Vater!
Vater is the best! I switched from Vic Firth to Vater years ago. Never going back. I love the Super Jazz-Sugar Maple model.
Thank you very much!
Excellent video really enjoyed the commentary from the actual owner. I like Vater sticks
Polyflex brushes with the thick wood handle are a beast, sonically and haptically.
It took me years to find the right stick and it happens to be Vater Los Angeles 5a's. Will never go to any other.
Finally got back into drumming after years of not doing it and went right back to Vater, still the best sticks around
@OrangeAvACounty Yes, he's a Vater Artist as well. We couldn't mention them all in a few seconds
wow, what a serious approach! Great story of a great stick.

I used to shop at Jack's Drum Shop when I went to Berklee in the 90's. There was also a killer pizza place a cpl doors down from Jacks!
I had been using vic firths for about 3 years when I started doing gig stuff, then I went to go buy some more but the shop had no 5a VF's so I tried the Los Angeles 5A's and I haven stuck with Vater for the last 5 years... Superb quality

Such an authentic and always personal stick. Since I play Vater, I never played anything else.
Freakn love Vater best and toughest stick great quality better than the rest

My models of choice, Fusion for the kit, Fatback 3A for pad practice. Both hickory wood tip. Thnx Vater!

Best Drumsticks out there! Since I grabbed a pair of Vater I never looked back. The LA5A are simply perfect. I love them!! #SwitchToVater

Yes. Luke is a Vater Artist as well. He uses the 3A Wood Tip
i been using the Vater DSK model for the last three years and I love the sound that I get from them......
Great video. I have used Vater for years and they truly are great sticks.
I love Vater. No other company compares.

Love my Vater drum sticks, and a fascinating manufacturing process.
Big fan of the Stewart Copeland model. Nothing to do with his name on it, just feels great to me. Also a fan of the 8A. Keep up the good work.

I’ve been using MV10s for ages and they’ve never let me down
Vater are very good drum sticks to use.
Proud to use Vater drumsticks! I use the Power 5A models.
Jose became a Vater Artist after this video was filmed and posted
Great video! Ive been useing vater for over ten years! I use the westside stick today! I break everything else.
I am a ProMark user 2B Japanese Oak. I think I’m going to check these sticks out.
Vater is the best period.
(Vater is KING)
AWESOME WORK HERE! I'll have to try a pair soon. Thanks for the tour.
You will be seeing a new model later this year that you will be pleased with! Stay tuned and thank you for your support!
Hi, Alex.

Wow thats an impressive process !!.
Good video in drum sticks I like Vater Percussion products
the best drumsticks in the world...!!!!

I love Vater.
thanks for making my favourite sticks Vater! Hope you guys stay in business until my kids have drummer kids of their own!
i went with sticks from a bunch of other manufactors: paiste, zildjian, vic firth, promark ... best for me - VATER sticks!! 5B and best of all sticks XD-5B (absolute versatile and durable and pleasure to play with!) hands down on Vater Sticks! keep up the awesome work!
Shannon Leto is my drumming inspiration which is why I use the Nude 5A sticks.
Thank you for your commitment to quality
Love this video, it really shows how much care goes into the sticks. In high school, had a pair of Vater 5Bs as one of the few pairs I frequently used in my stick bag with the Sam Ash logo for 2 and a half years, they held up super well before the tips started splitting a bit. Love the Polybristle Whips. Top notch brand.
I especially like the weight and the tips of Vater sticks a lot more than Vic Firth sticks for example.
I've got some 80's Vater branded hi hats somewhere around here.... great video.
If I ever move to MA. Please hire and teach me how to make drumsticks. I'm autistic but can learn many things.I know, it's an important job to make all those sticks and I love to play the drums. I really like my Chad Sexton sticks. He is one of my favorite drummers.Thank you
the effort.... salute
Virgil Donati wasn't mentioned :( Cool video though :)
For any new drummers vater has the best sticks and they have any size or variation u may like
Vater for life! seriously!
I m playing Vater more than 20 years and l hope l'll play Vater for another 20 years
Love the History, Jack's was my Drum Shop. sad to see it go.
The 3A fatbacks are the best feeling and longest lasting sticks I've ever used.

A very interesting video. Thanks for posting.
Vater is great, I love the Xtreme 5a and Xtreme 5B
Does Allan Vater roll every Vater stick by himself?
Yes, he is rolling right now.
Yes he does every stick!!!!!!
I've got myself some awesome super lightweight 7a drum sticks, there strong and light. love em. although i do use zildijiain sticks
Been using CS's Funk Blaster for around 5 1/2 years now, don't plan on using any other stick! Perfect for me.
i don't know if you guys will read this, but i have used alot of Vater sticks, they are awesome, i've used vic firth, promark and other sticks, your sticks are really durable and i love them!, just wanted to ask if some day you could do the "universal" stick a little longer from 16' to 16.5' that would be amazing!
Vater for life!
I really wanna try out a pair of Vater's Recording or Session sticks. I play a lotta styles of music - everything from jazz to rock to hard rock to Latin American musics to metal - so I figured that with names like Recording and Session that they'll be useful for multiple styles of music.
