This almost happened to my family in 1960. I was 11 years, old my sister 9 and brother 2 when the exhaust pipe of our gas water heater rusted through. We'd all have died if our neighbor lady from across the street hadn't wondered why my mom's car hadn't left for work. She came over and looked through the door window and saw mom sprawled out on the kitchen floor. She broke in and we all awakened in the local hospital. Needless to say, all four of us survived.
Our sons alarms went off at 3am about a week ago. They got out off the house and called the FD. They inspected the house and found a crack in their furnace. It was shut down by the FD. It was 2 days before the plumber could repair it. I'm so grateful the alarms worked. My heart goes out to this family.
My family and I almost died from the same thing years ago. I knew something was going on with my gas. I called the gas company out. They turned off my gas completely and I had to get a new heating system and the second time I moved in another house and I had to get off brand new chimney because the same thing happened again. It’s a silent killer and you could die in your sleep.😢😢
Once this happened to me and my dad. Got a shortness of breath dizziness. Thankfully it was the day and we got out. The next day we apologized to the owners for trying to break in and charges were dropped
Had the same happen to my family. Thank God for neighborly love they were bringing us a cherry pie to welcome us and found us passed out with our door wide open. I was only 13
I'm not sure but think electric heating commonly used in apartment buildings can bring a higher bill than gas heating systems but this makes me trust it more. This sort of thing shouldn't be happening today.
Good to have but not full proof. A few years back in berkeley ca there was a couple that passed away. Family did a welfare check and found their c02 alarm blaring and their apartment was hot with heater on

Hate when people say CO is odorless. While yes pure CO is odorless. It is never in its pure form and you’ll likely never encounter pure CO. It’s always accompanied by hydrocarbons and other pollutants that do have an odor.
I have a whole house generator several feet away from a non-bedroom window. It's the only gas powered appliance I have. I've got 3 CO alarms sitting on the sills of the 3 closest windows. How anybody lives with gas stoves, gas water heaters, gas fireplaces, and gas furnaces inside the house with improper CO alarms is astonishing.
My husbands boss had a new furnace installed in his condo and a month later he was found dead. Carbon monoxide poisoning. EVERYONE needs carbon monoxide detectors in their homes.
@jaknap1 Whatever works for you. I prefer to be safe and not die from carbon monoxide poisoning. Several years ago I would start to get sleepy when my gas furnace was on and I found out that the heat exchanger was rusted out allowing carbon monoxide to circulate through my house.
As a gas detection equipment practitioner, it's sad whenever I hear about things like this. Carbon monoxide is dangerous and can be present in many places. It is highly recommended to purchase a portable and sensitive carbon monoxide detector that can save your life when it matters.
Probably first thing checked by the first responders too. Found source of carbon monoxide and got it shut down. Legally the news can't say for sure it was CO poisoning until an official declaration.

According to the EPA and most safety recommendations, a carbon monoxide detector should be installed on a wall roughly five feet above the floor as carbon monoxide is lighter than air and tends to rise, making this height the most effective for detection; you can also place it on the ceiling if preferred.

Where was the carbon monoxide detector? Every home should have one.
Most black families don't change the batteries in their smoke detectors
Instead of trusting humans to have one, it should be forced into every home, without them having to directly pay for it.
