Though STAR TREK is considered a series of television shows and movies, it has gone beyond that. It's not just people dressing up to attend conventions and seeing the movies. In its earlier years, it inspired people to look beyond where they wanted to go. How many stories has there been of those telling how STAR TREK helped them find their future professions in life - doctors, scientists, engineers. Even to actually fly the Space Shuttles or up to the International Space Station. Every day items are now a part of our lives. The communicator became the flip phone; computers, big screen televisions. Doors that opened automatically. The list is almost endless. At the age of 14, I wanted to be the youngest writer to submit a script to TOS. David Gerrold beat me to it. Later in life, with the help of an agent, I tired submitting scripts to TNG. I don't know why, but I thought this had been unveiled quite some time ago - I didn't realise it had happened just last autumn. I imagine this is going to be quite the draw for Bloomington when it comes to Star Trek fans, much like the recreated original series sets have benefitted Ticonderoga up in New York state.
I never saw captain janeway as a women I only saw her as a great captain she was a great captain not because she was a women as picard is not a great captain because he was a man it was because she was a great captain I would have been honered to serve under her if that was possible. I really love her getting this monument. this show represented the best of star trek
This. Characters like her and B'Elanna (who I didn't actually like, but did respect) and 7of9 were great characters. Strong willed, intelligent, confident, but flawed and written with depth & some subtlety. As a kid and then a teenager they inspired me more than I probably realised and in a small way helped shaped my view of women in leadership roles (other things had a greater impact of course, like my parents and teachers and real world figures, but it all added up). They were strong characters who happened to be women and weren't written in this modern juvenile 'girrrrrl power!!' pandering way that's pre-dominant in most fantasy media nowadays. Take, for example, 7of9 in Star Trek Picard. In Picard it's all 'look guys, isn't 7 a bad ass? She can DUAL WIELD PHASERS! And she'll kick anyone's ass and power pose even without a gun. Isn't that COOL?! You GO girl!'. Ergh, it's pathetic and such lazy writing. In Voyager she's cool and deadly; the threat she poses to everyone is made clear but not over-used, and when she does have to resort to violence it's in this off-handed way, as if her enemies are mild annoyances being put in their place. And it's only one very small part of her character - her intelligence is more prominent and utilised more than her ability to kill a human with her little finger. Not so in Picard. It's a good example for me of the decline in quality of the franchise in recent years. Unfortunately it's not limited to Star Trek.
Great statue of captain Janeway of the star trek voyager series. Kate was great at playing the captain. They should have statues of all the captain star trek series 😀😀

I have to point out that I bet, none of the new trek shows or characters from these shows Discovery and onwards will accomplish that. Picard S3 did many things right yes, but thats a different story. Impressive what was done here! So why is there no Janeway show, a real one? ;)

Phhhptht. Can't believe anybody did this. No diss to Kate Mulgrew; she's always been a good actress, with a fine ability to switch from drama to comedy on a dime, but Janeway put her whole crew in danger multiple times because of misplaced sympathies for total strangers, often hostile ones. She should've been put in restraints the minute she made landfall on Earth, and then court marshalled!
This really shows the impact of Star Trek in our culture. Congrats Kate!

Riverside, Iowa is cool and full of Star Trek! There are actually two monuments to him now, an original stone one in a backyard next to a mural and then a bronze sculpture in one of their parks. There’s also a history museum/gift shop and lot of iconography all over town! It’s really fun! I think they have a Star Trek festival there most years.

Galaxy Quest is a great movie!
Great beautiful charismatic actor and humanist #
love this woman!
I liked the Janeway character and I think Mulgrew did a great job in the role. But, I find this whole monument thing to be quite bizarre.
