Hi Katie, i just had a quick look on Google & it certainly seems like frostbite. I found an article saying the comb will benefit from a thick layer of Vaseline for protection??? 🙂👍 I hope you do manage to find some girlies for the boys (pigeons). Lovely looking chickens & a very handsome Stewie 🐓❤
I love how you start your vids, all calm, and warm.
Thank you, I am happy you can share a bit of my peace. I appreciate your support! Have a great night
I like the song!
❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏🙏thanks Katie . You are my sunshine ☀️ you give me a feeling of hope . Thank you 🙏
That's very kind of you, I appreciate you being here. The entire goal of my channel is to inspire, so thank you for giving me inspiration back! Stay safe and warm
It looks like frostbite to me. Two of our boys had it last year and it healed up eventually just fine!
Our Barred Rocks lay well after 5 yrs (no lights.) A bit nosey, they gossip a lot about the neighbors, in town living...LOL!! Curious about what the older hens were roosting on, looks like metal on the video. If it's not never mind, IF it is you may want to change that out. That rooster was like..."What is going on and don't post this on FB" 😆
My Barred Rock is both the most fearful one, and the first to run out and say hi. All my girls love to complain about the weather!
Hi! My trick for frostbite on my chickens combs is to put on a little wax paw protection for dogs. Makes it so that the frostbite doesn't get any worse. What a cool and beautiful rooster!
Could be a little frostbite on that comb. :( They're pretty rugged though. Their combs will get darker red and recover, the black bits will likely slough off and not be back. Combs get less fancy as they age for that reason. I'd check heat containment on their body by fluffing my fingers through their feathers and getting some skin to skin to make sure they weren't cold to the touch and to the point of losing too much body heat. They're just so famous for being fine, fine, fine until they're dead or dying. Oy.... Their toes can be an issue, too. I'd maybe thicken up the straw or whatever is in the nesting boxes so they can really cozy in and have little igloos, could save you from frozen eggs, too. And maybe throw a layer of sawdust or wood shavings on the floor over that straw. It's a great insulator when they pack it down. I lived in central NH, I get you girl. It's why I live in Florida now. LOL :) They look bright and healthy though. Eating, drinking, pooping, laying and active is good. I used a heated stand for my water dispenser, so my chickens and ducks had warm water, and it released a little heat into the vicinity - if they were cold, they'd cozy up and I wasn't chasing frozen solid water all the time, either. :) You're doing a great job with them!!! Winters are brutal for farm animals - except maybe horses, they love it. ;) Just so you know, I managed the Farm Animal Rescue Program for a large SPCA for over a decade. I got your back!! xo
Excellent advice, thank you so much.
@@katiekateshomestead Anytime, I love your videos, so zen....
Definitely frost bite on Stewie. Unfortunately,i have serval who have frost bite, also. They amaze me,by how tough they are. Be safe and stay kind
Ahhhh I suspected. Hopefully he heals up ok
It isn’t necessary to do, but some people both soak their feed mix for a few hours and also mix in warm cooked starchy veg, to give them a feed that is less expensive, more bioavailable, provides more energy. and is warming in winter.
But yours seem just fine with out that…very lively.
Wonderful! That heaving would be a pain in the arse but otherwise, such a peaceful existence!
I often wondered about the extremely cold weather affecting their production. Poor babies! I would just want to cuddle them to keep them warm!
Seeing your cat sneak out like that made me wonder if a weasel, mink, or other wild predator could sneak into your coop! I read spraying Pinesol around outside of buildings keeps mice and rats away, from getting in buildings.
You take care Kate, love you videos of you lifestyle! Can't wait for Spring! 🐈🐈⬛🐓🐔🐓
Hi there, thank you! I have a doubt latch on the outside to lock the coop at night. I would never leave it open like that, they'd be dead for sure with the predators around here. I will start setting my catchlive trap as soon as the snow melts. Stay safe and warm!
Chickens, cats, and cows make good company, they listen.
The best!!!!!
I have chickens and cats and talk to them all the time. They all love to help me when I'm outside, especially in my garden.
One of my wife's Colombian friends farms chickens nearby our place. It's been much warmer than up your way, and we're still not able to get any fresh eggs! Organic or even free range eggs are horribly expensive from US stores, now -- Avian flu, I suppose.
Maybe you need a latch that can adjust itself to compensate for sag. Look up Self-Aligning Gate Latch at Lee Valley.
I never knew there was such a thing! I will look that up, thank you!
The black spots on the comb is frostbite. I put Vaseline on my girls' combs and legs if I'm worried about frostbite.
Any news from the stray kitty?😊
No! I haven't seen him/her since that first night!
@ hope the kitty is well and safe 🙏🙏
