The Angels, the Shangri-Las and the Ronettes were part of trend to present a tougher image for girl groups, in order, apparently, to set them apart from the sweeter sound of pop stars like the McGuires or the Chordettes. I will admit that the latter's "Sandman" and "Lollipop" seem to have established themselves a place in Rock history. The predecessors to the Motown girl groups were 1) The Bobbettes whose "Mr Lee" reached the top ten in 1957 and 2) The Chantals featuring the great Arlene Smith. Their "Maybe" sold a million records in 1958. Still a wonderful recording to listen to!
My Uncles made it to Dick Clark's show in the late 1950s and so I learned a lot of rock n' roll lore from them, eyewitnesses to that history and they said the same thing as you have here! Thanks for your post!
This is a rare appearance by a girl group on television in the early '60's. Before the Supremes, and shows like Hullabaloo and Shindig which would feature the sound more regularly, the '60's girl group sound was rarely featured on prime-time TV shows (not including the female groups like the McGuire Sisters who appealed more to the older viewers). Consequently, this was the only appearance of the Angels on the Sullivan show. It has been said that some viewers complained that this performance was too "raunchy" and "wild" although it's hard to believe. "My Boyfriend's Back" was a #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1963. The members of the Angels at this time were Peggy Santiglia (lead singer) and Phyllis and Barbara Allbut.
Thank you for sharing! 💖 It's hard to believe that viewers thought this was considered "wild" and "raunchy". I wonder if those viewers are still alive. If they've heard some of the performances today, they'd know what "wild" and "raunchy " truly is. These Angels have got nothing on some of today's performers. 😄
@@uuuuuuuuiiiiiii It was! But a lot of older folks weren't used to seeing young women sing like this. The sound of the young girl groups was a relatively new style in music. Just before the British Invasion, they dominated the radio waves.
Love this performance by The Angels. Such a great song and so fun to watch. Thank goodness this amazing 1963 footage has been saved. Thank you very much for posting it.
This was as late as 1963?! LOL!!!!! I thought it was 1961! The early '60s were a continuation of the '50s. Just think how much changed from '63 to '66. I have seen footage of bands from 1991 (30 years ago) and it looks like yesterday).
This song was written by Bob Feldman, Jerry Goldstein and Richard Gottehrer. Bob Feldman graduated from Lincoln High School in Brooklyn, NY the same year as Neil Sedaka. Around the same time , The Tokens formed in Lincoln High School with Jay Siegel. One of The Tokens from Lincoln High, Hank Medress, went on to introduce the young ladies from Dawn to Tony Orlando and produced most of their huge hits. Sportscaster Marv Albert was also attending Lincoln High School during this period and the year after Feldman and Sedaka graduated from Lincoln, Neil Diamond graduated from the school!
Feldman Goldstein and Gotteher became the the STRANGELOVES, with their big hit I want Candy but when they toured only one of the 3 were involved They basically took a road band with them. Today their album has stood the test of time. Gotterher also produced the first and best Blondie album. They discovered Thr McCoys and brought them to NYC to make hits and the surely did.
The Angel’s are my number one top favorite girl group of the 50s 60s and 70s music their harmonizing voices are just out right beautiful what are the most beautiful harmonies I’ve ever heard I wish I could get their autographs
60s(and 50s) girl groups..and soul groups in general ..possibly my favourite 'genre' & era of music by a million...the chantels, the dixie cups, the exciters, the supremes, the ronettes, the toys, the platters, little anthony & the imperials, ruby and the romantics, the shirelles, the crystals, the marvelettes, the miracles, the blossoms...you name it..the voices, harmonies, image and everything about them was OUT OF THIS WORLD...no music can compare to it these days.
Love this oldie but good'ie song. The 60's were fabulous and so were the"Angels" and many other girl singing groups of that time .So glad I grew up with these wonderful songs ,I know them all by heart. Wish I could turn back time.Nothing like those good old days.Their a treasure to remember and to cherrish.
The band seems to be playing in a lower key and at a faster tempo than the band on the record. That couldn't have been easy to sing to, but the Angels hung in there like the pros they were and smiled their way through it. Bravo! L to R: Barbara (Bibs) Allbut, Peggy Santiglia, Phyllis (Jiggs) Allbut.
Excuse me BUT for the 8 people who agree with you. ALL OF YOU ARE WRONG. BY 1963 MOTOWN SOUND WAS ESTABLISHED BY THEN!! LITTLE STEVE WONDER WITH FINGERTIPS #1 IN 1963; MARTHA AND THE VANDELLA. HEATWAVE #1 IN 1963; MARY WELLS WITH TWO LOVERS; MARVIN GAYE WITH HITCH HIKE; THE CONTOURS DO YOU LOVE ME ALSO IN 1963 PLAYED ON AMERICAN BANDSTAND. THE MOTOWN SOUND SLOGAN WAS THE SOUND OF YOUNG AMERICA. MAY NOT APPEAR ON ED SULLIVAN BACK THEM BUT THE SOUND WAS ALREADY ESTABLISHED. HITSVILLE U.S.A.!!
I was thinking for a moment that they reminded me of Caucasian Supremes, but then I remembered that the Angels pre-dated the Supremes. But as the other reply to your post pointed out, Motown's Martha & the Vandellas as well as the Marvelettes were already on the scene by this time.
For those wondering... doesn't that sound like a certain commercial jingle? Actually....yes, all you youngsters out there. The cadence of this song would morph into the Christmas Hess Truck jingle used since the 1980's. Don't believe me? OK....a 1 and a 2.... THE HESS TRUCK'S BACK AND IT'S BETTER THAN EVER... See? The more you know....
Where's the supremes and FYI I live in Mississippi and they said the Ed Sullivan shows were going to be played at 9pm but I have yet to see a single one.

Is this really the source videotape from this 1963 show? Either someone left it in the boiler room or this is a video transfer using software from the AOL 56k dialup era!
Shave- a-thon - I agree. It's like the "quad" tape is lost and it is a kinescope of some show that borrowed the tape. Reminds me of that Judy Garland video from London.
@@MostlyBrenda I could take this upload and using video and audio freeware, easily adjust the contrast and sharpen it a bit. Is there a color version? (I doubt the original video was recorded in color, given the times). But what I mean is has anyone colorized it with AI or what have you?
These innocent looking gals sang lines like, "Now you're gonna get a beatin'!" and "You're a big man now but he'll cut you down to size" in the original recording. Can't wait to see if they pass the Ed Sullivan censors in this appearance.

Exactly. Yep this is a historic clip.
Awesome performance, job well done by The Angels. Ed's orchestra gets in some good beats too!
