Route 66 was decommissioned in 1985 So what keeps us coming back to the Mother Road?

Can someone tell me why it was decommissioned? I feel there was some kind of scandal behind it.

Interstate motorways superseded the routes. They're more efficient than the old US Routes. Even though that stupid 55 mph limit would be in place for another 10 years.
But don't worry, you can still go to all the places on the former route, which is signed 'HISTORIC ROUTE 66.'
