Thanks it's helpful because I am at the point where I can sail around but planing is always out of control. The front of the board always ends up too high out of the water
THANKS! I like the instruction... but when i start in the position you were in before putting your feet in straps (not even talking about starting in straps) my back of the board would sink, making it even harder to start planing. I literally have to be close to the mast foot with both feet to have a chance at getting on plane.. what level of wind would you expect one needs for this method of getting on plane?
No, I don't like the instruction. I don't understand why teachers can't explain what is planing. This is something a beginner or intermediate will experience with any sail size when all of a sudden the wind gets very very strong like 15 or 20 + knots. What happens: a.) The sail starts to "buzz" and make sounds b.) The is key. The board starts to slip and slide. c.) At this point, it get's scary but this is when you can start planing. d.) Instead, of trying to keep the whole board on the water, what happens now for control is to "lean back and pull" the sail to do like a wheelie on a bike or skateboard. e.) Now, you are riding only on the tail of the board. At this point, know it acts like a true surfboard or snowboard. You ride on the tail but also on the edges. Heel toe. f.) Control your fore/aft balance by quickly push/pull the boom towards you or away. At same time, lean back or squat down(bend back foot knee) for additional control. It is absolutely impossible to "start" with your foot on the footstrap if there is no strong wind. The best you can do to practice is "pull back" on the sail so you lift up the nose. Then slowly sink but that is the feeling that you need to practice. You are muscling back the sail to lift up the nose. When you have proper wind and you are "not afraid" or "expect" this sensation then you will can progress.

Nice to hear, Hope that already works out.
Press down on your toes and push on board with both of your legs to flatten the nose! Get ready for the power!
