- Rick Colby, a conservative Republican, spoke at the Ohio House of Representatives against a bill the would limit gender-affirming care for minors. Colby has a transgender son named Ashton.

Ya know... Sometimes, that's what it takes. Im bi-racial and my cousin on my moms side was a right wing nut. She started dating a young black man and experienced INTIMATELY what it was like living with, around and through black people. She sent me a message one day and said she was sorry for all the ignorant crap she was spewing before experiencing a different culture, feeling and lifestyle. Having a black cousin wasnt enough, it had to happen TO her. Sometimes, thats what it takes. Ignorance seems to only dissipate when it emerses the ignorant. I applaud him for growing with his son from this rather than staying stuck in his beliefs. We have to learn to be positive to those who realize their mistakes rather than rub their noses in it. We can all be better.

I’m not a doctor or psychiatrist. I do know that there are a lot of unusual phenomenon that we’re aware of, and probably a lot that we’re not.

I gained a trans granddaughter because her bio g'ma didn't want "her". She lives in the same household as my other 2 grands so I said I'd be her g'ma if she wanted me. Thank goodness she said yes and she is lovely. I love her to the moon and back. I'll be at a Pride event tomorrow and I'll be giving out free loving grandma hugs. Hmmm, the regret stories of those who were transitioned as children are heartbreaking. There should only be psychiatric care until at least 18. I believe 25 is a better limit. The dysphoria is real, but the chemical and surgical intervention in the case of children is abuse. It is often done with almost no hesitation according to a great many of these patients, so yes it is often done on a whim.
They're also exceedingly rare.
If something had a 99% success rate anywhere else it would be "amazing". 🥳
But because trans women shake our "men are superior and would never change things" narrative, some are unnerved.
They've had male privilege, they've had stronger bodies, and they STILL give that up.
The terrifying part: if they gave it up, and were happier for it (despite now being in a harder path in life) maybe if you think about it, maybe you would too.

@Bliffle Splick From where does this 99% success rate number come? This "treatment" is very new, so there is no way to know what the "success" rates are. As no one can actually change their sex, to me, it's 0. There are those that can pass as the opposite sex but that does not make it real. In a few cases, "transitioning" is the only answer to treating gender dysphoria. It should only be done after a great deal of psychiatric care. Years of treatment, real treatment, not immediate affirmation by the psychiatrist. Illegal drugs can give you immediate relief from the pain of your reality, but that does not make taking them a good idea. Transitioning is a bad idea in most every case but is now available almost immediately with ONE visit to a bad psychiatrist.

That's fine when the person who wants to transition is an ADULT. Kids are too easily swayed by social media and other factors to make a permanent decision that will render them sterile and will affect the rest of their lives. I'm saying this as a liberal member of the lgbtq world who has trans friends and family members who also believe that kids should wait before medically transitioning.
I feel the same way. I don't understand it but I love children and wouldn't want them to suffer. But there is a limit to doing something permanent before a certain amount of maturity understanding and adult reasoning needs to be present first.
The problem is kids are always subjected to everything because of how open the internet is and social media especially. That doesnt mean we have to hate on trans people and thars what happens.
Trans people are born with a brain configured to the opposite gender from what their sex is. Many trans kids know from an early age that 'they're not right'.
Forcing them to go through puberty as the wrong sex is child abuse. It is much, much harder to get rid of characteristics that develop during puberty, than to listen to the child and provide puberty blockers. Then, when the kid is 16 or older they can decide to go on with hormone therapy or not.
But forcing them to go through puberty for the wrong characteristics is just wrong. And by banning gender affirming care for minors, that is exactly what these horrible bills will be forcing on these kids.
Added bonus: there is much less surgery involved when using puberty blockers.
Also: the amount of gender affirming surgeries on minors is statistically zero.

Which part of the transitioning do you have a problem with? Gender-affirming care for children can be a small as letting the child cut their hair or wear clothes in the gender they prefer. All of this, including puberty blockers (if that's decided on) is done under the guidance and agreement between the child, parents, doctor and therapist. Who are you to tell a family and their doctors that they can't support their child in this way?

Because the woman may decide later on to have children. So if they won't let an adult decide for themselves if they want to have children or not. Why would you think it is appropriate for a child to decide or even their parents to decide to cut off their body parts. That's the part I have a problem with something that is irreversible. If you have a female or a male that wants to transition and they want to dress like the opposite sex and act like the opposite sex. I have no problem with that whatsoever. It's the part that they cannot reverse what they have done to their body. I have watched many videos of people that transition very young and they regret it. Now they have become a patient for life . Thank God all my children are grown except one. Also thank God that me and my wife hold the same views on this issue. I have a transgender child that DID NOT openly acknowledge their transgender feelings until they were 21 years old. They began questioning their gender at about 14-years-old and felt it was something they would outgrow. As they continued to mature, they realized that it was exactly who they were and then came to us. We immediately embraced this because our child had taken the time to really figure out what was going on. Should she have come to us as a child (3-16-years-old) demanding they were in the wrong body we would have pushed back. We honestly always knew she was perhaps gay, but never imagined she was transgender (and a lesbian). She has never been gender dysphoric in that she hates her body and wants her parts removed. Perhaps in the future, but not right now. She's in no hurry to have any surgery. She's been on hormones now for two years and is very much settled into living her authentic life. I'm saying this because I think there is a transgender fad going on. There are twisted people out there who don't understand that children always want to be a different sex at some point, it's part of them figuring out who they are. There have always been transgender individuals. But what we have is an epidemic and that's just not normal. We were blessed to have a child who has taken their time, not demanded that we change their past (such as removing anything that was related to their male presentation), and has always been very understanding when it took time for us to get the pronoun and name right. I wish all transgender parents had a child who was so understanding that not only are they experiencing challenges, their parents are too.

Love your child well. I can only imagine what it’s like to go through this and see your child struggle and suffer. But if your child was born female, she will always be female. If your child was born male, he will always be male. Experimental surgeries and dangerous hormone injections that have been proven to cause serious health problems and complications while doing nothing to help your child’s mental health in the long term are not the answer. Please, love your child well and tell your child the truth, that transitioning is not going to solve the problem. That the problem needs to be addressed in the mind, and that your child should accept his or her body as it was designed, as it is, not mutilate it to attempt to make it look the way he or she thinks it should. Praying for you both.

As a father of 4 "trans" daughters, my voice hopefully has some weight in this discussion. None of my biological girls showed any signs of gender dysphoria until 5 years ago. Like dominos, they all suddenly began expressing their desires to be something other than girls. Raised in a loving and caring home, mom and I tried our best to understand this sudden and catastrophic changes in not just their identities but also every aspect of the loving and caring young women we raised them to be. This ideology has gone way beyond the 1% of worldwide people experiencing true dysphoria. It is now a social demand for parents and the public at large to conform or be destroyed. I used to respect those in the gay community and still do for some. For most now all I have is distain and a hardened heart for nearly all of this confused and destructful community.
It would have to be a miracle for someone to have 4 daughters struck with gender dysphoria. I think they’ve all been struck with leftist ideology.

I thank God my conservative mother did not, or would not have, if I had been born in the 90's or later!!!!
Because I was needing of any sort of relief and would have transitioned, I know I would have, as it is being promised as the relief giver and the 'cure' for the suffering.
And then, thanks to people who support the transitioning of children and teens, I would have spent the rest of my life dependent on Pharma, in high likelihood suffering from a serious of medical conditions brought on by those meds, and still suffering with those suicidal thoughts, albeit decreased perhaps a bit, perhaps not, from when I was a teen.
And statistically, my chances of being alive at the age of 60, would be considerably less. I would have a higher chance of being dead, than alive, due to suicide, or drug addiction, or complications thanks to transition meds like heart problems, other organ failure, osteoporosis, etc.
Instead, I grew out of my dysphoria in my very late teens, early twenties. I gave birth to three beautiful children, and have a wonderful decades long marriage to my best friend who would never even looked at me if I had transitioned as that is not the sort of person he's attracted to.
I and statistically 80% of us "prewoke" gender dysphoria sufferers are *extremely* happy we have dodged today's perception of "decency and balls".
I and innumerable others who have walked this walk to its fruition, know your version of "decency and balls" is a curse.
Even many of the 20% of my generation's dysphoria sufferers who did *not* grow out of it do not support transition minors, they can see the horror we are dooming so many children to, never allowing the high opportunity for them to grow out of it.
Without puberty blockers, 80% cone to terms with our bodies and better understand our gender, and go on to live normal lives without all the former suffering.
Those who go on puberty blockers, 0% have that wonderful, incredibly freeing experience. 100% go on to suffer in transition. For the remote 20%, yes, their suffering is relieved, a bit. But just a bit, it never goes away which is evident by their being the highest, by far, group to commit suicide, even after transitioning.
So even amongst the trans community, only a minor support the transitioning of children.
But why don't we hear from such people?
Because of the reaction I am about to receive here with my comments on this thread. Transgender individuals struggle with so much. When they speak out against the transitioning of children, based on their solid experience, the amount of hate, anger, and bullying, even doing, they receive is terrible. So, being bullied as such, they, and people like myself, stay silent.
I'm retired. I don't have to worry about getting fired from my job.
So, very glad I am of a generation that managed to dodge those "balls" you want thrown at children.

No child's genitals are being mutilated. Doctors don't do gender reassignment surgery on children. A very strict criteria has to be met with a psychologist before any surgeries can take place. They are only performed on adults after years of therapy. Please stop spreading this nonsense.
