You missing a whole point. They used smoking to escape from all the harshness and burden of war, and also from Barnes presence in it, you can hear it in conversation they held, talking about how they hate him and want to kill him, hand him over to court martial etc etc. Than he walks in and says I DON'T NEED THIS SHIT, I AM REALITY, (e.g. I DEFINE THE RULES)😊. At the end of the speech he calls them out on thinking about using court on him, saying that they are cowards, and if they want to do anything about him, they better do it right than and there like men. That was the meaning of this whole "I am reality" thing

When he picks up the pipe he tries to take a hit but doesn’t actually in order to get the group to lower their guard.
Usually I think color grading footage into black and white is gimmicky but this truly makes the film look better in my opinion. It doesn’t have that washed out 80s look anymore. The darker shadows from the higher contrast with the blacks and whites make the footage look so good. Fits the mood very well and tells a different story.

It's kind of freaking me out, the movie is amazing regardless, but the tone is so much scarier in black and white. Barnes looks intimidating as hell.
Yeah, usually I find movies to be more enjoyable with colour with obviously exceptions, but this movie looks rly cool with it
