I noticed that the further depth it goes in a game, the more it alienates the casual audience. It has a character? It's a turnoff. It has more than one sentence in a minute? That's a turn off too. Violences of any kind? Good luck. I'm in the same boat, none of my family likes games and I tried very hard to get them to like them. Basically for some people, anything that takes any explanation is unplayable.
