I'm German and can totally confirm it. I rarely say "I love you" more like "i like you" till like 12 to my parents or other people that are close to me. It's a bit strang now that i think about it. But for me it's the same as Cecilia explained in the video. It's hard to say. If i say it it really means something deep. I dont say it occationaly or like "By the way...". But i think we Germany are a but special about that xD Cold as steal, Facial expression like marble :'D and all in all we act a bit cold. 😅 But let me tell you something... if you ever meet a German and crossed the "Stranger" line to a "Friendship" you will be stunned. We are very chatty and have the best black humor and sarcastic fun talk XD We're friendly and dont give away our heart to every one. :) So dont think we are robots with no feelings like many hollywood films portray us XDDD

quite the same not gonna lie. i get misunderstood a lot before when i say i love you, it is genuine but they keep it always thought in a romantic way... for the hundred time, very annoying and unpleasant, they keep romanticizing everything. few weeks ago someone keep saying "i love you" as a joke but i laugh it off, felt weird but i was probably obvious i'm having hard time saying the same way because first of all i don't love that person, second he is just a classmate in college, third he was one of the bullies in my first highschool before i transfer that made me tried ooffing myself(too much that can't remember now). sure he change but still pretty weird. lastly i only say i love you to those i considered i really love regardless familial, romantic or platonic.

Honestly I really get that. I do that with everything I find uncomfortably to say like when I have to go to the restroom I will say anything except "I need to take a piss" which I would argue is a fairly normal thing to say in our generation but no I have to turn it into a silly thing and say something more along the lines of "I have to go take a pizzzzzzzzzzz" and like... why am I doing this to myself? I just can't not do it for some reason...

Its the same with "I love you"/"Ich liebe dich". Its meant for a special Person, so it would feel wrong to say it casually. "I like you alot" could be translated to "Ich hab dich lieb" and would probably be the next lower Step under "I love you", except for very long, very specific Sentences to describe a very specific Setting that would allow the limited use of "I love you".

I can relate. I don't think I've ever told my siblings I love them. Except my sister, at her wedding where I was crying like a TRUE MAN because that's my little sis 😭 My brother I don't think I ever have, and very very rarely do I say it to my parents. We all know.

Yeah, the english people need a more casual version of that. In german we have the confessional/romantical type of love you "Ich liebe dich!" and which you say to your partner or kids and then we have the more casual type of "Hab dich dich lieb" (more like "i appreciate you deeply"), which people can tell everyone, beginning with their parents and ending with very close friends. I never really got used to the english casual "love you", so i kinda ended up using "luv u" (spoken basically "luf ju") for those occasions, to make it very clear that it is not meant romantically. xD

I understand what CC is saying, for me the word "love" carries a heavy emotion with it so it never really felt right to just say it casually. At most I'll say "like" or "admire" because "like" has a lighter emotion to it, and "admire" is more prevalent with a feeling of respect more than anything. I always felt that "love" should be said to someone or something very important.

Im German too, so i get it. I can try to explain it. "I love you" pretty much means exactly what it stands for in German, so if you say "I love you" in German, it doesnt mean that you like someone or find someone cool or fun or anything but you literally LOVE them, like i wanna smooch you kinda love. While "I like you" in German can mean a broader variety of affection. In English i realised that "I love you" is used in a more broader sense and can mean just general affection in a...more enthusiastic way, i guess. In German there is also a difference between "Ich hab dich lieb" and "Ich liebe dich". First one basicly also just means "I like you" in a more enthusiastic way that is mostly reserved for Family members and very close Friends. While the latter is just "I love you" and is mostly used to tell your Girlfriend/Boyfriend/Wife/Husband that you love them. If you want to tell a Person that you just got to know that you like them you usualy use "Ich mag dich" wich also just means "I like you" but it's the more mellow version and the more socially acceptable thing to say to someone to tell them you feel positive about them and dont hate their guts. So it's a bit more awkward for us Germans to use "I love you" casually. Well...except Kiara i guess but she's Austrian. You either have the grumpy Austrian that is oddly loving in their own way, the psychopath Austrian or extroverted Austrian. And neither of them are shy at throwing all kinds of Words at you. (The grumpy one is my favorite, they insult you in 10 different ways and somehow manage to show you they care about you in the process, as wierd as it sounds.)
