It is to be noted that the way we know prostitution now is different, in that era, Yoshiwara was the pleasure house, there are strict rules, with traditions. Oirans knew to play instruments, poetry, calligraphy. They are entertainers first then sex workers.

No, Oiran faded out completely after/around WWI. Tayuu still exist though (Kyoto only) there are currently 2 tayuu houses one is accepting trainees while the other is choosing to die out. I think there are about 6 Tayuu still working. They no longer practice prostitution since the 1950's and solely focus on their other skills like dancing, playing instruments, conversation etc. They simply are there to preserve certain traditions.

No, Oiran faded out completely after/around WWI. Tayuu still exist though (Kyoto only) there are currently 2 tayuu houses one is accepting trainees while the other is choosing to die out. I think there are about 6 Tayuu still working. They no longer practice prostitution since the 1950's and solely focus on their other skills like dancing, playing instruments, conversation etc. They simply are there to preserve certain traditions.
