It seems like people are sometimes a little lost when they're searching for an ukulele to buy (either for themselves or for someone else). I understand that some people don't have access to music stores where they can test different ukuleles, so I hope that this video answers questions that you have about ukulele varieties. I have a Lanikai Soprano, a Protége Concert, and a generic Tenor. I thought I hated my cheap $20 eBay Tenor until I realised that the strings needed to stretch. Now I think I dislike my Concert Uke because the strings feel so coarse and as a result, half to 3/4+ of the time, they clunk and sound raggedy aka wicked bad. So I usually only use the other two. I want a Baritone tuned to GCEA, and now I definitely want the Sopranino and Sopranissimo ((the entire range is on my wish list when I win the lottery, lololol)). And the Banjolele. I'm curious about the guitarlele ((guitalele?)). 😉
I'm a beginner, I've never been a singer or a stringer, so my uploads are blacked-out ((audio, not video, YET)) and all gospel except 1 ... ((2 if I give the link, it *is* video and it totally sucks!))

I have a baritone, a tenor, two concerts, two long-neck sopranos and 5 sopranos. Obviously, the sopranos are my favorites, but also really like my concerts. I'm in a wheelchair so I always play sitting down and the smaller and lighter an instrument is, the more comfortable it is for me. I'd love to try a sopranino and a sopranissimo someday. I've also been obsessed with plastic ukuleles lately so my current favorites specific ukes are my high G Flea concert and my low G Outdoor soprano.

Great video, overview, comparisons. I am currently researching which ukulele to buy. Thinking concert size. I bought my bf a uke a few christmases back (kala soprano) and have been playing around with it some the last few weeks (using your videos!). Feels a bit small for me so concert seems a nice entry. Overwhelmed about a good starter uke.

Wonderful and thank you Bernadette. Wish this video was around when I was choosing to dip my toe in the waters of playing Uke. I didn't want to bite off more than I could chew monetarily, so I settled on a Kala Soprano Uke package (KA-15S). I know now that I should probably get a Concert or Tenor Uke to spread the strings and frets out a little more to give my fingers a little more room to make the chords without muting nearby strings...But I am still learning, and better yet, STILL having fun making music with my Soprano uke. So...I can't justify the expense to upgrade to a $120...$150 instrument when I'm making this one work just fine. Someday...yes. But for now the sound of my Soprano just makes me smile and feel happy. :-) Thanks for all your hard work and your help along the way. You have always been awesome!

Well, I have the little Ohana sopranissimo in the willow eggplant color as well (love it!), 4 sopranos (including the lovely Bernadette Flyte which I love, a Waterman, a Dolphin and a vintage Islander), 2 concerts (one with a low G), 4 tenors (1 with a low G) including an Outdoor tenor and one of the Enya's made of the laminate, a baritone (D,G,B,E) and a 1920 Maybelle Slingerland banjolele! Got a new baritone waiting at home tuned to G,C,E,A. Yes, I am a hoarder as well! But ukuleles are like children - they have their own unique style, personality and voice! You have to love them all!

I guess I must let go of some of my uke children; I have at least 1 of each except tiny soprano and the bari. My fave of all is my "Joy," a gorgeous KoAloha tenor w low G. (Have 2 more tenors.) I have 3 concerts, and I agree with you about ease of fingering those tougher chords. I go w my concert for certain songs. I also have a beloved BANJOLELE, concert size--love it! I also like my travel Flight & the other 2 sopranos, but I tend to play concert over soprano.
I would love to have a baritone strung GCEA--that deep sound is divine!

Hi Ms. B, I still have my Luna concert, I have Aquila Reds strings with low G, a Cordoba tenor with Aquila Reds, low G, a Caramel baritone, Aquila Reds, low G, and, thanks to an Incredibly Sweet, Generous, Wonderful teacher that has been a constant source of inspiration, a Donner UBass. All my ukuleles are acoustic/electric. I will probably soon acquire some that are 'just' acoustic. At that point I will probably have a couple of them with the traditional high G. I had a Mitchell baritone that was acoustic, but that went to a friend that was struggling with trying to play a soprano ukulele. I miss the beautiful tone of that instrument. I have been following you transition from a school teacher in Japan to a world-wide ambassador to all the other ukulele teachers here on RUclips. Maybe sometime when I return to visit my family in Southern California I will finally get to meet with you face to face. Or sometime you might find yourself in Northern California and I can attend an event you're participating in here. As usual I have rambled on for far too long. Blessings to you. Cheers!!

I have a Makala soprano and a Kala Exotic Mahogany concert. The concert is my fav all the way because I just love the sound, and as you mentioned, the E chord is easier to reach. Tbh I find the E chord a bit hard to reach on the soprano, which I guess is because the frets are so close together. I definitely agree that concert size is the happy medium! I love that, at least in Kala's Exotic Mahogany line, the concert has a full sound but not overly so like I find tenors to have (or maybe it's just because I prefer brighter tones over warmer ones). Plus, I have fairly short fingers, so I couldn't see myself being able to reach the more "stretchy" cords on a tenor or bari.
