You're inspiring me to start a rabbit colony. I love me some lapin à la provençale. But the primary "product" will be fertilizer in the form of rabbit poop. Everything else will be a bonus.

It's very useful to produce your own fertilizer on sight. 🐰💗

Nice colony. Question- you wire is about 6 inches down you said. When you initially laid the wire did you immediately Place the 6 inches of dirt or did you allow the hay to compost down.

Nope. It was dug down a little, but basically, just put the wire on top. I do deep litter method fall to spring dig everything out 2-3 times in that time and then bare swept ground in summer. Everything that comes out goes into my garden.

How does the hay work when it rains?

I'm in the desert so we don't get a lot of rain normally. This year it has been different, a lot more rain than normal. The straw works as a barrier for mud. I just put more on top each time it needs it (deep litter method). In spring, I'll dig all of that out, and it will go into the garden as a wonderful fertilizer.
