Hi Randy, thnx for this part. It's great. I'm working as an exam's manager on a school in the Netherlands and can provide some workflow cases if you wish. What I'm really looking forward to is the ability not only to administer general data but grades- and results data on subject classes as well. With this and to define graduation criteria can indicate a successful graduation. The grades-systems over the world differ a lot. In the Netherlands for instance, it is common to grade in the decimal system (for 1,0 - 10,0 where 1,0 is the worst and 10,0 is the best grade). But in the US it is common to grade with letters (A through F I believe). So, on the Admin sheet we must define this. Another thing is (I'm a Privacy Officer to ;-)), depending on the role of the app user, some fields of sheets(parts) can or can't be mutate/seen. Therefore, a rightssystem would necessary.

I have not had time to watch all of it yet so you might have said this already, but could the schedule section include one for the teacher, so they know what class to teach. And one for each student, so they would know what class and room to be in. So excited for this. I have been trying to modify the hotel booking one to do this.
That makes a lot of sense to have a 'teacher view' and a 'student view' so that when we email schedules out to students or teachers they are very different. I have written down your excellent idea so you can expect to see it in the coming weeks.
Hey Randy, thanks a bunch for high quality tutorials. 8 minutes into the video. One suggestion. To select a student, i feel it will be a better approach if we use IDs. These can be alphanumeric. Because two students in the same class can hàve same name. Since it is part 1, would be easy to make changes if you want to. Apologies if i jumped the gun

Hi and thanks so much. Programming different colors in VBA with conditional formatting is extremely time-consuming. If you want to use multiple colors in multiple conditions use shapes instead. The only issue am having is that when I add New Student the Student ID is not automatically being created. Make sure you pull new student ID's from the cell that contains the formula =Max(Stud_ID)+1 Also if you want to combine alphanumeric letters with your id you can use a helper column. This us great great lesson and will be comprehensive application. Any chance of including a lesson on how to run this application on secondary basis with all data being reinstated with master copy in case of unintentionally or intentionally temper of application. This borders around protection and security of application i guess.
HI Vimal thanks so much for your suggestion. I am sure you will love this. If you save this application in any type of a cloud folder such as Dropbox, OneDrive or Google Drive, each saved version is already stored on a server, protecting the data. That is probably the best and easiest solution since it does not require any additional programming. I hope this helps and thanks so much.
Hi Randy, Thank you for this great video. I have learnt so much. I was following along but on the Sort Names macro, I get a compile error saying that the SkipSort function or sub is not defined. How would I correct the error? I also tried adding more data to my database and when I do that, it sorts all the data in that row including the header. Hi Brandon in each of those columns i put in a formula '=Column()' This formula displayed the column # that it is in. (Just to show you the columns) then I highlighted those cells and clicked the Delete key as they were just used to show you what column #'s they were. I hope this helps and thanks so much. What I like to do with sheet codenames is prefix them with 'ws'. This has 3 benefits, 1. it is visually apparent in your code that you are referencing a worksheet 2. when you type 'ws' intellisense shows only your sheets and 3. you are unlikely to have any other variables with that name.

Hi and thanks so much. If you use an adjacent cell value, you can apply conditional formatting based on that adjacent cell (Or you can use shapes, which is probably faster and better and uses less memory like in the sample i gave you in your other comment)
I need help I am trying to do the sort names in the StudentDB but it wont add my name to Sorted Names column in AA3. I have checked my code and it matches yours but will not transfer the names over to the AA column like in timestamp 1:50:59 of your video. Can I get any help with this?

Hi randy thank you for these videos, they are an excellent source of knowledge! I do have one question Do you suggest we continue using non named ranges for larger projects? Example: on the horizontal tabs instead of having to write out which rows to un hide, would it be better (aka better “code” and “habits”) to name those ranges and use them as such? I even noticed on some loops you like to count out columns rather than do some sort of .count, I wanted to see if there was some reasoning behind this
Hi Saul, thanks for your comment. I like using as many named ranges as possible. I like to see them in the code and in formulas. In my big Accounting application I have hundreds of them. I once heard that too many named ranges slows down an application but I have never scientifically tested this theory out. So yes, adding named ranges in these instances will work very well. hello, My problem is: after assigning a macro to new student, as soon as I click on new student it displays: Run-time error '1004' We can't do that to a merged cell. and then in visual basic the range of: .Range("F3,F7,F9,H9,J9, etc has turned yellow. How to arrange ? please. This part 1:22:06
HI and thanks that means you are trying to clear the contents of a merged cell, however you have not identified the upper left and lower right cell addresses within VBA. So if Cell A1 is merged with B1 and you try to clear out only A1, it will return an error. You must use something like Sheet1.Range("A1:B1").clearcontents I hope this helps and thanks so much.

Hi Randy, thnx for this part. It's great. I'm working as an exam's manager on a school in the Netherlands and can provide some workflow cases if you wish. What I'm really looking forward to is the ability not only to administer general data but grades- and results data on subject classes as well. With this and to define graduation criteria can indicate a successful graduation. The grades-systems over the world differ a lot. In the Netherlands for instance, it is common to grade in the decimal system (for 1,0 - 10,0 where 1,0 is the worst and 10,0 is the best grade). But in the US it is common to grade with letters (A through F I believe). So, on the Admin sheet we must define this.
Another thing is (I'm a Privacy Officer to ;-)), depending on the role of the app user, some fields of sheets(parts) can or can't be mutate/seen. Therefore, a rightssystem would necessary.

I have not had time to watch all of it yet so you might have said this already, but could the schedule section include one for the teacher, so they know what class to teach. And one for each student, so they would know what class and room to be in. So excited for this. I have been trying to modify the hotel booking one to do this.
That makes a lot of sense to have a 'teacher view' and a 'student view' so that when we email schedules out to students or teachers they are very different. I have written down your excellent idea so you can expect to see it in the coming weeks.
Hey Randy, thanks a bunch for high quality tutorials. 8 minutes into the video. One suggestion. To select a student, i feel it will be a better approach if we use IDs. These can be alphanumeric. Because two students in the same class can hàve same name. Since it is part 1, would be easy to make changes if you want to. Apologies if i jumped the gun

Hi and thanks for your Comment Richard, If you want to have multiple address via a single record you can do that in a new table as long as the addresses are linked with a single ID such as "Student ID".
All of the addresses can them be displayed in a small table in the Student Information.

The only issue am having is that when I add New Student the Student ID is not automatically being created. Also, what if there are pre-created Student IDs i.e. A2365, will that be able to work if someone enters these in any order?

Also if you want to combine alphanumeric letters with your id you can use a helper column. One column with only numeric values and another column to combine the text with numbers

Any chance of including a lesson on how to run this application on secondary basis with all data being reinstated with master copy in case of unintentionally or intentionally temper of application. This borders around protection and security of application i guess.
HI Vimal thanks so much for your suggestion. I am sure you will love this. If you save this application in any type of a cloud folder such as Dropbox, OneDrive or Google Drive, each saved version is already stored on a server, protecting the data. That is probably the best and easiest solution since it does not require any additional programming.

How would I correct the error? I also tried adding more data to my database and when I do that, it sorts all the data in that row including the header. Hi Brandon in each of those columns i put in a formula '=Column()'
This formula displayed the column # that it is in. (Just to show you the columns) then I highlighted those cells and clicked the Delete key as they were just used to show you what column #'s they were.

What I like to do with sheet codenames is prefix them with 'ws'. This has 3 benefits, 1. it is visually apparent in your code that you are referencing a worksheet 2. when you type 'ws' intellisense shows only your sheets and 3. you are unlikely to have any other variables with that name.

I need help I am trying to do the sort names in the StudentDB but it wont add my name to Sorted Names column in AA3. I have checked my code and it matches yours but will not transfer the names over to the AA column like in timestamp 1:50:59 of your video. Can I get any help with this?

Do you suggest we continue using non named ranges for larger projects?
Example: on the horizontal tabs instead of having to write out which rows to un hide, would it be better (aka better “code” and “habits”) to name those ranges and use them as such?
I even noticed on some loops you like to count out columns rather than do some sort of .count, I wanted to see if there was some reasoning behind this
Hi Saul, thanks for your comment. I like using as many named ranges as possible. I like to see them in the code and in formulas. In my big Accounting application I have hundreds of them. I once heard that too many named ranges slows down an application but I have never scientifically tested this theory out.

Hi and thanks Zainab, if you have a fingerprint reader you can then translate that into a unique ID. This ID can be stored with each student. I hope this helps and thanks so much.

Thank you so much for the tutorial. This is very useful. I am referring to your video and try to build a simplified version on my own. However, I have encountered a issue when trying to create the button. When I click on the new student button, the 'existing student group' button doesn't appear. Wondering if it is linked to the codes that I might miss out during the process. Hope you can guide me on this. Thanks a lot.
Hi Sarah, thanks so much. You can check your 'Selection Pane' to see which pictures exists and which don't, or are not displayed. Sometimes groups or shapes do not appear because their width or height moves to 0.

hello, My problem is: after assigning a macro to new student, as soon as I click on new student it displays: Run-time error '1004' We can't do that to a merged cell. and then in visual basic the range of: .Range("F3,F7,F9,H9,J9, etc has turned yellow. How to arrange ? please. This part 1:22:06
HI and thanks that means you are trying to clear the contents of a merged cell, however you have not identified the upper left and lower right cell addresses within VBA. So if Cell A1 is merged with B1 and you try to clear out only A1, it will return an error. You must use something like
Sheet1.Range("A1:B1").clearcontents

What I want to request you in the second tutorial is that when I click on update button and didn't make any changes in the Target cells I want to get message box "please make at least one change to update student" then if the user makes change, save that change.
