  • In a quaint town of Madhya Pradesh the Khatri family is responsible for putting the spotlight back on the ancient bagh-printing technique, something they have now introduced to a global audience.
The Khatri family, led by master craftsman Ismail Suleiman Khatri and his grandson Mohammed Bilal Khatri, has been instrumental in preserving and innovating the traditional Bagh print art form. Their exceptional craftsmanship has garnered prestigious awards, such as the Shilp Guru Award and the National Award, recognizing their dedication to this ancient technique. Bagh printing, originating in the 1960s, involves intricate designs stamped onto fabric using hand-carved wooden blocks and natural dyes derived from minerals and plants, showcasing India's rich textile heritage.
Under Ismail's mentorship, the Bagh print has evolved, blending traditional methods with modern aesthetics. Mohammed Bilal Khatri continues this legacy by infusing contemporary fashion sensibilities into the craft, ensuring its relevance in today's global market. The authenticity of Bagh prints is characterized by vibrant, naturally derived colors, intricate motifs, and unique fabric textures, distinguishing them from mass-produced imitations. Through their tireless efforts, the Khatris epitomize the preservation and adaptation of India's textile traditions, securing a vibrant future for Bagh printing.
