I had a M340i touring before: drivetrain is spectacural, pushes almost as hard as the M340i. last 2 months i did 78% and 98% on electric only for 45MPG and 450 MPG..... Electric power is plenty enough to pass comfortably in town. It's a bit stiff on 22's. I'd stick to 21's. It's also surprisingly fun to drive on twisty roads for an SUV. My biggest disapointment is the comfort seats: i wish Joe did that review last year ! I agree they do not support for shit ! they are very good on the highway, but bolstering is inexistant. big WTF from me on this. So comfort seats: only go for it if you are a heavier person. I was considering the hybrid 45e a couple of years ago when I bought my X5. But the batteries meant no 7 seat option. I ended up going for a pre-facelift M50d fully loaded (and 7 seats). Air suspension, rear-axel steering, 400hp and 800Nm. It still baffles me how luxurious and sporty it can be. Fantastic machine, which I love to daily...

I tested 45e and 30d 2020 models and found that for all distances below 350 km the 45e had less consumption, when the 45e was charged. PHEVs are best, as you can leave the car “on” and AC/heat/cooling on while on ferries, waiting for someone or similar without emitting exhaust. My average yearly consumption is now 2 liters/100km
We have a G12 745Le, in hybrid mode the combined consumption in the BMW app over the last month has averaged 64.2 mpg Uk (4.4l/100km) which is incredible, considering the car gets driven on motorways as well as in the city and is a 2.3 tonne living room with TV’s, tables and two recliners in the rear😂 The 45e drivetrain makes for an impeccable daily driver!

As a 45e owner I 💯 % agree with you, the best it was the 2021/22 45e, I regularly get 35-40 miles in summer months and 25-32 in winters. The 50e seems to get 35-45 miles. But not like twice like this guy says. But BMW does lock up the battery cap a bit for us in USA.

X5 hybrid is by far one of the best cars in the suv sector,,I have a 45e and easily get 42miles range in electric mode, so don’t know how you were only getting 25? By far a credible daily driver
Yeah I have had a 45e for a couple of years and get around 35-40 miles of electric range on local trips and get 50+ miles on trips including motorways. On really long trips I've got 70+ miles with all the recharging.
Standard sports seats more supportive and adjustable? Our family friend has an M50d x5 (albeit a late pre LCI) with the solid back sports seats and they’re nowhere near as comfortable or adjustable as the comfort seats? Stiff backrest with no upper back split, less adjustment control. Not as nice headrest support/feel and narrower seat bases towards the rear of the seat leading to numbness in your backside/upper thighs on long journeys. They keep saying it’s the biggest flaw of the car, the comfort seats in our G12 745Le are among the very best i’ve ever sat in, and they’re to my knowledge the same ones in the X5 in the video? If you mean the optional ”M” seats like the X5M/F90 M5 it’s a different piece of cake however!
The boot space is exactly the same as the 30d. The 150 liters difference lies below the bottom shelf of luggage compartment. Tested both, 30d and 50e. The 50 is a beast and I drive it now as one of the best cars I ever owned. It is also to mention, that you can heat up and cool down the car from the distance because it is the PHEV. The average consumption is a joke for almost 500 HP. Comparing the 30 and 50 is just not fair - in my opinion :). 50 all the way.
How does BMW make the double boot door to be in line with trunk bottom if the boot space in PHEV is smaller? It is not my opinion, it is the bmw statement. But you are the expert and a pretty damn good one. I realy like your reviews.
I have just changed from my second X3 M40d to the X5 50e and absolutely love it, but I totally agree with everything Joe says. I think the diesel engines suit the larger cars so perfectly. But the suspension on the 50e is really good.
I got the 45e 5 months before the 50e came out. I prefer the look of the 45e but love the performance of the 50e. But they are both great. I love my 45e
The 3.0d for me . Out of city economy will be so much better - heavy, hybrid battery doing nothing .. Also the torque for towing - excellent... Finally losing that luggage volume is terrible. Only reason to buy this hybrid version is if you do short, slow journeys where the diesel could get FAP/EGR issues.
Thanks for the excellent review Joe . Brilliant as these cars are they are just too expensive on a lease especially for 2 years as cars get old very quickly these days and it’s good to change them after 2 years . This one you tested is around £100k you can imagine the monthly payments - not for the average middle class just for the rich or very well paid I’m afraid that’s the reality
Hi pricing is a bit insane! Stateside you can spec a very good one for $82K with some nice and needed options, starts at $72K with good standard options already. I have the 45e.
Hi Joe, I’ve had my X5 50E since last October, and love it. Totally agree that it is the best big SUV hybrid out there. I regularly get over 60 miles electric range and fuel consumption overall of between 55 & 75 mpg, covering a mix of local more electric runs and longer runs using petrol and battery hold. Looking at your going round the controls, there are detail differences between your press car and mine, for instance mine does not have a pure electric button. It’s a beauty to drive and hopefully will be around with me for a good while. Thanks for another great video Joe!
100% on point about the weight and handling, it rides like a floaty boat and definitely far from the ultimate driving machine or standard bmw handling that I'm typically used to. It's fine if you like "comfort" and soft handling, but not the sporty handling even in sport mode. All else is good though.
the 40i is the best of the bunch. Sublime air suspension set up ( way better than any JLR product) lovely sounding engine which performs brilliantly and you still have the full boot space. Any bike trips coming up soon ?
Great car, i have the last of the745le's, coming from a mapped 740ld I was sceptical, but a part from the silly fuel tank it is capable of really good economy. In the last 20 days I have done just over 2000 miles and averaged 58mpg. The main reason is you need to charge at night and whenever you park during the day, the one thing that you must and i empathise must is use the bmw satnav for every single journey, put all your destinations in at the beginning, home - wherever - home , this way the car will use electric/petrol to the best and always makes sure you finish your journey on electric. I'm very interested in getting the X5 50e next if i don't get the 750e. I do wish these roadtest could be done with real life circumstances, i have never yet got in my car and used electric only, you have a hybrid so use the hybrid.
I've got the b57 in a g01 x3 and it really ticks every box, really not sure what I will go for in a few years with all the hybrid options, I would buy a car at approx 4-5 years old and the reliability would worry me as well as reduced loading space
Depends on your journeys, 50e here. Charge at work, all commutes on electric and then hybrid for longer drives. Had a 40d previously, lovely car - but modern well sorted hybrids drive much better around town 👍🏻 Diesels still king for motorway munching though
Or to East Yorkshire as I have a 40d pre-LCI m sport which I think is peak X5 as I get all of the benefits of the handling and power delivery etc WITH physical buttons. Plus I can toggle distance on adaptive cruise from the steering wheel. Joe, when you’re an even bigger name in the BMW world, please please talk BMW out of this stupid obsession with getting rid of buttons. I sort of understand it for easy enabling of new features over the air but who on earth is ever not going to have climate control ?!? I note that with comfort plus you even get the buttons you used to have in the front in the rear where your passengers could more easily live with touch screen.
My girlfriend has this car, with the sport seats. The seats are the best I have sit in. We recently went on a trip through Italy with it. I drove it for 5200km in 17 days. (I drive an M2, 2018 myself.) It's an amazing car for cruising. It’s super comfortable and definitely has enough power, even in the mountains. When driving sportily on small winding roads, it has excellent road holding. However, at higher speeds on the highway, it feels really heavy. There's a lot of body roll, you can’t steer it precisely, and it often feels unsafe. There’s also a significant issue with the hybrid system. It’s set too high (it switches to combined gasoline at 132km/h), which quickly drains the battery, resulting in high fuel consumption afterwards. I found that the best way to drive it is by placing the transmission in S mode. Then you can get over 3000 km on one battery and constantly drive in a mixed mode (battery + gasoline), which lowers your fuel consumption of 5 to 6L/100km. Over the 5200km I had around 9.5L/100km. The response time of the manual shifting with the paddles is also a real problem for me. Ok, I'm used to a DCT, but approximately 0.5 seconds response time for this is not okay. It’s a luxury to travel with this car, but driving it sportily at high speeds on the highway is not really recommended. Also lot's of problems with the software. Sometimes the screens come black for 5 minutes wile driving. The wind noise on both frond doors is absolutely terrible.
@@alexandregouge6075 If you press 'battery hold' then your average go up with 5 to 6L /100km... because you don't use no battery anymore. (I did the test with battery hold, consumption 15L/100km) Test it... for long trips, with no change for recharging, put it in S. I did more then 3000km on 1 charge with an average around 9,5L/100km If you want lower rpm in S, use the paddels (that's what I did most of the time)
Have been considering between RRS P460e SE and X5 50e MSport Pro to replace my current Merc EQC. Have owned both a 13 and 16 plate RRS in the past and was lucky not to experience any of the reliability issues many have had with Range Rover. The RRS extended EV range and 50kw charging along with more luxurious interior and more imposing driving position has been very tempting, but the superior driving capabilities and sportier performance of the the X5 50e, plus I have never owed an X5 is swaying me towards the BMW. I will be towing, which gives the RRS and edge but the X5 towing capability is plenty good for my needs, so that’s a draw for me. I am placing my order next week, what would you go for?
a 30D is about 30K cheaper than a 50E over here, but we get punished a lot when we buy a diesel. We get taxed personally to on company cars, so it would cost me 1400€ bruto per month for the 30D and 120€ for the 50E.
I have a '21 X5 40i in the same spec; M-sport Manhattan Green, on the simple but classy 20" 740M 10-spoke wheel, and wouldn't change a thing. I am curious if you have any plan to get a hold of any new Porsche with Active Ride? I am curious to know if it can be significantly better.
I have G05 2021, 4.0i , 65K/hm ( bought new) , and I’m very very satisfied,….5.0e facelift is an upgrade, but using the car for five years( only for G05 users and bmw fun’s B58 ) , is the price worth it to buy this model instead of mild hybrid 4.0i?
I am not from the UK, but the chicane in opening shots look so similar to the ones Harry Metcalfe uses in Harry’s Garage videos.😅 I wonder if Joe lives in the same area as Harry.
Great review Joe. If and when I have to change my M4 for something more sensible, I have to say I am sorely tempted by one of these. Is it just me though or do the door handles on it (and also current M3/M4 amongst others) look absolutely massive! The newer sleeker ones on e.g. new 5 series and 2 series look so much better! I fear that it is going to age them terribly. Anyone else feel the same?
Great Review, and much different than any other X5 50e review. I have got very similar same colour and trim. It looks fantastic and drives wonderful. Best in the market if your daily commute covers the electric range, which is 60miles during these summers in the UK. I am still not quite sure about the technology plus package in the UK though, if driving assistance plus and traffic jam is part of that or not, or we dont get them in the UK as per current UK highway regulations? I ordered tech plus pack but still trying to clarify if it will do level 2/3 driving. It does not seem to do anything beyond basic level 2 at the moment. Thanks
What is the bother with simply plugging it in overnight? When you plug it in you can also precondition the car, this means it is heated or cooled ready for you departure.
45 e with stage 1. And it will do 60km in EV mode easy. Idk what you did with your 45 but something was wrong. Henry M had the same long term and he got the same numbers as me, as did Matt Watson.
People crying about the price are wrong imo. This car is way better than previous generations X5 so you would expect to pay more. Plus the majority hybrids will be company car buyers, who couldn’t care less about the list price. For any of the other non hybrid versions, most cars are financed, so the monthly cost is what matters and dealers/BMW tend to heavily support discounts so the monthly payment aren’t as much as you expect.
Great review! I don’t share your view on the Sport seats vs Comfort seats. I especially look for BMW's with Comfort seats, as these give me no back pain on long rides. If you're skinny build maybe the Sport seats are a good option
It's better IF you do long journeys. If you do mostly short journeys, the hybrid is better. I've had a Cayenne diesel for 11 years now and when we replaced it, we got a Cayenne PHEV. We don't do as many long journeys as we used to, it now mostly short trips. In 14,000 miles of driving, a little over 10,000 of that have been with the engine off and we are averaging 66 MPG. Know your use case. The 30d is exceptional...I just rented one last summer and it was outstanding. You can't go wrong, just pick the one that works for your use.
@@joetacchino4470 well i am still not convinced by the hybrid and i will tell you why. First of all there is an 8000 pound price difference. Not everyone can plug it in all the time and when you do drive around with a depleted battery you are carrying 300 400kg extra. Also i think the depreciation of the hybrid will be more severe. And honestly once out of warranty and something goes wrong with the hybrid system or battery oh my God i cant think of the costs. Btw a b57 diesel is much much much superior to the porsche diesel. Having said that hybrid is perfectly fine for lease buyers who intend to keep it for a couple of years only.
The hybrid is far more economical than the diesel as it recharges the battery when on long journeys from your braking and downhill segments of your journey. I travel from Bracknell to Devon and the journey average was over 80 mpg.
3:07 those boot volume calculations are nonsense. I have a business partner who drove a 3 series touring (diesel) and upgraded to this 50e X5. The boot is way more practical and can fit a lot more then a 3 touring.
The pothole statement you made..i have a x5m50d e70 lci ..you literally feel everysingle bump theres no fancy stuff..its just 20 inch alloys..m sport suspension and runflats all put together
This car was gonna be our next car but BMW hiked the x5 prices by an insane amount in 2023. I noticed that the x7 costs almost the same as the x5 when fully equipped so we bought an x7 40d and we will pair it with a cheap used ev to create a much more sensible garage rather than owning a single hybrid x5.
Bmw lately, are adding way above inflation rises. Greed will be their downfall. BMW was always successful because they were popular and mass produced they are jeopardising that with these stupid prices, 100k is just insane for an x5.
£100k for an X5 is mental, and then they give you a 'detuned' B58. Bar an X5M, this is top of the range and they detune. I think at the money they're asking, a full fledged B58 is warranted. I had a LCi X5 30d on loan, while my M4 was being serviced. Gorgeous cruiser. New iDrive versus the iDrive I have in my G82 (pre curved screen) - horrific experience. Too many menus and too much to learn. Just give me buttons. Agree on the seats - a bit wide and not masivelt supportive. That being said, very comfortable. Personal note, I hate black interiors - bland & boring. Gorgeous car, minus the rear light cluster - something about them just feels like they were thrown on from another car.
Big BMW fan for years - BMW do challenging designs that grow on you. But the recent generation of large BMW's has lost me - ugly as sin. Way to big and way beyond too heavy - 5 and 7 series being pretty much 3 tons the minute you add a few options. The price is outrageous. - especially give the rate that battery tech is evolving so the models are outdated and unsupportable after a few years BMW have missed a trick with tech fest overload - BYC are coming for them with more clever tech and about 1/3rd to half the price. Its a battle BMW cant win. BMW used to be all about "the thrill of driving" now it probably should be "the fear of BYC"
Have bmw lost the plot with their pricing?! Not that long ago a 30d was £55k-£60k. Now it’s £80k. Is this to cover their fines for not hitting ev targets?? Fk you EU.
hybrids very much blowing away pure play ICE platform in North America as battery electrics for what we call here "daily driver work" already wholly dominate the US market for what might be called "commuter work" flat out *TAKING OUT* the entire ICE platform in the USA. Already 20% of all gasoline supplied to the World comes from the USA with that amount set to soar as we no longer much use the product any longer... definitely great news for Europe and automotive absolutely. Fit and finish of pure play BEV right is crazy good as of course are vehicle automomy systems. The range of these vehicles hybrid or pure play BEV surging as well soon into 3 figure 100 plus mile range for the hybrid systems absolutely. Hopefully soon all of this will start to appear upon in the boating industry as while i already built my own hybrid drive for that can't go much beyond a few miles and needs a repower now. In boating *"ranging out"* very much matters #neptunus_yacht 😊😊

Great review as always, and you can't beat a X5!
I have this car, it's amazing!
Yeah, and how many of these do you see pussyfooting around London between café's and indie schools?
You would travel should wish at 70 mph whilst on the battery.
Geez bmw is more expensive in the UK than US, used to be the opposite. Love the car though, one bmw’ s best model right now
Thanks for the excellent review Joe .
Loving the lci and the 50e hybrid + B58 would definitely be my choice
Always preferred the 30d over the 45e but the 50e is so much more useable
Car and Driver tested this thing and it did 0-60 MPH in 3.9 secs which is nuts, a bit faster than my X3 M40i.
The X5 in this color looks great
I've got the b57 in a g01 x3 and it really ticks every box, really not sure what I will go for in a few years with all the hybrid options, I would buy a car at approx 4-5 years old and the reliability would worry me as well as reduced loading space
Joe what about the 40d version?
Joe, come up to southern Scotland and I'll let you do review of my new X5 40d. Peak X5 in my opinion.
Depends on your journeys, 50e here.
Charge at work, all commutes on electric and then hybrid for longer drives.
Had a 40d previously, lovely car - but modern well sorted hybrids drive much better around town 👍🏻
Diesels still king for motorway munching though
Press the battery hold button, don't go to s, it goes too far in the rpm and hence is not efficient
I average 9L/100 at 130kph...
@@alexandregouge6075 If you press 'battery hold' then your average go up with 5 to 6L /100km... because you don't use no battery anymore. (I did the test with battery hold, consumption 15L/100km)
Test it... for long trips, with no change for recharging, put it in S. I did more then 3000km on 1 charge with an average around 9,5L/100km
If you want lower rpm in S, use the paddels (that's what I did most of the time)
And this is the review, I’ve got 5 series G30 model and wind noise on the motorway above 130 km/h is horrible, I would expect better quality from BMW.
Great looking car heavy on the price . Great review as always
It's interesting that in some markets it's reversed (Ireland as an example) the diesel is 30k more than this as it is emissions based
Same here in Finland, plug-in hybrids are the cheapest so no one buys the ice versions. 🙄
That’s due to the additional VRT that is payable on a diesel car in Ireland
I like the presentation, love the tong.♥️ And rhe love of bmw of course.
Great review Joe🎉
Hefty motor
a 30D is about 30K cheaper than a 50E over here, but we get punished a lot when we buy a diesel. We get taxed personally to on company cars, so it would cost me 1400€ bruto per month for the 30D and 120€ for the 50E.
I wonder what kind of milage you would have on a longer journey like 300 miles. With like 1 or 2 half recharge
Brilliant vid as always Joe!!
Great review Joe
Would love to see you review and compare the X5 against the Range Rover Sport p460e
Lots of UK ‘A’ roads look like this e.g. Gloucestershire , Oxfordshire.
Same road
@@badgastein2 Yes, but in this case, it's literally the same set of corners.
He does, and it is.
@@joetacchino4470 Wow! You learn something new everyday!
25 miles out the 45e? It's getting cold now and we are still getting 35. Easy over 40 miles in summer here in Scotland.
Great review as usual buddy 👏
Great Review, and much different than any other X5 50e review.
I have got very similar same colour and trim. It looks fantastic and drives wonderful. Best in the market if your daily commute covers the electric range, which is 60miles during these summers in the UK.
I am still not quite sure about the technology plus package in the UK though, if driving assistance plus and traffic jam is part of that or not, or we dont get them in the UK as per current UK highway regulations? I ordered tech plus pack but still trying to clarify if it will do level 2/3 driving. It does not seem to do anything beyond basic level 2 at the moment. Thanks
New car pricing is unsustainable. As soon as people realise they can live without new cars, prices will have to drop.
Interesting see pricing here in Oz compared with volume seller - 30d - another thorough review JA!
First time viewing your channel. Great review! Greetings from The States…
I would still go with a 3 litre diesel I can't be bothered to charge for 60 miles range
What is the bother with simply plugging it in overnight? When you plug it in you can also precondition the car, this means it is heated or cooled ready for you departure.
Shame the mpg wasn’t covered to compare with the 40i. But another brilliant video. Thanks
Such a Great Review. Thanks!
45 e with stage 1. And it will do 60km in EV mode easy. Idk what you did with your 45 but something was wrong. Henry M had the same long term and he got the same numbers as me, as did Matt Watson.
any news on the issues with the battery cooling system on this PHEV?
Sport seats are uncomfy as fuck for long journeys
Great looking car
overall 30d is still better than the 50e especially if you do long journeys.
The best X5 it's quick enough, looks good, hybrid powertrain wich migh be helpful and not crazy extremist like the wicked X5M comp 😂
Does this version have AWS (all wheel steering)?
Hi Joe if you had the choice would you get X5 40d or 30d
Always the 40d. Wayyyy more power
I have a 3 series 330e and I could never got back now, it does everything well
yeah PHEVs are great
Be interesting to compare this with 550e
Harrys Garage back roads.😃
Awesome car!
You do not need to be in sport mode to recharge the battery.
Looks good from the front
I hope BMW can fix the issue of 3rd B58.
3:07 those boot volume calculations are nonsense. I have a business partner who drove a 3 series touring (diesel) and upgraded to this 50e X5. The boot is way more practical and can fit a lot more then a 3 touring.
I have one, 1st daily that I would buy again
Same
Same
I've 7, one for each day of the week
Same. But my wife 550e faster 😆 ror like mad lion
This or a diesel X5?
About time you review this 50e.
My issue with it is it's low ground clearance.... Night really a true SUV....
As an everyday car and charging at home only, this or an iX Xdrive 50?
I went for the iX - it’s defo a step up over the X5
@@SDK2006blol, drove both and definitely felt the other way !
The pothole statement you made..i have a x5m50d e70 lci ..you literally feel everysingle bump theres no fancy stuff..its just 20 inch alloys..m sport suspension and runflats all put together
Your making me want to buy a 30D so badly.
I don’t think 50e gets air suspension - packaging compromise to put a battery and motor
That’s what we have done. Zoe ev for town everyday run around. The big car for the longer trips! Works for us really well.
Shame they don’t do the 50e package in the X3….
i wonder why they detune the b58
“SLOW” marking on the floor at 00:09
- Am I a joke to you?
Who messed up the drivers headrest? 😂 The passengers seem to be still fine.
The boot is smaller than a x3 M40i
£100k for a hybrid X5, I’m done 😂
used to be nearly half that for an x5
BMW have to find some way of paying for all those replacement EGR coolers in the G30 530d done under recall. 😂
I have, but I am still crying about that number, not to mention the painful depreciation 😢. Nice car though
Get a Honda then bro
@@gaara4667 NSX?
This or a 550e touring?
This. The 550e is ugly
The illuminated X5 on the dashboard is hilariously tacky for a £100k car. Horrible.
These cars are great as run around where people need space . The moment the battery is dead’s is a proper disappointment!
PHEV don't get the respect they deserve. I think all powertrains need to coexist. Great review!! Keep it up!
Bmw lately, are adding way above inflation rises. Greed will be their downfall. BMW was always successful because they were popular and mass produced they are jeopardising that with these stupid prices, 100k is just insane for an x5.
They’ve moved the x5 upmarket though. 375hp in the base engine, and that starts in the high 60s
If you drive without A/C you will achieve a range closer to what BMW claims.
The state of UK roads has definitely gotten worse because so many EV type vehicles are SO HEAVY!
- especially give the rate that battery tech is evolving so the models are outdated and unsupportable after a few years
BMW have missed a trick with tech fest overload - BYC are coming for them with more clever tech and about 1/3rd to half the price.
Fk you EU.
The steering column and that long iPad are NOT a good combination.... Steering wheel looks so out of place.
The big screen is very useful. The augmented reality is very clever and useful.
hybrids very much blowing away pure play ICE platform in North America as battery electrics for what we call here "daily driver work" already wholly dominate the US market for what might be called "commuter work" flat out *TAKING OUT* the entire ICE platform in the USA.
Even though I like the front door handles so much, they had them for quite some time now. Have they run out of new ideas to come up with totally new ones???
