It's part of a larger problem, that our government and criminal justice system are absolutely indifferent to the hardship of hardworking honest citizens. In 1991 I had my ten year old, rusted Honda Civic stolen off the street in Queens, NYC. When the cop came to take a report an hour later he said that an old car like that is worth much more for parts and it was probably already in 2000 different parts by now. I researched car theft in NYC and found that in the preceding year there about 15,000 car thefts in NYC. Of these about 1200 of the thieves were caught. Of the 1200 that were caught about 160 went to trial and of these only 64 served jail time. I'm a dentist and at the time was struggling to save every penny to get out of that sh*thole of a city and didn't bother buying a car to replace it. So it struck me that stealing cars is literally safer legally than being a dentist in NYC. Really pathetic.

Why not implement a chainmail wrap? And if you have one, weld it onto your exhaust pipe before and after the cat. Or you can use the chainmail as a way to make that mesh so the cat can breathe. Most of the time these guys have that special metal pipe cutting tool on Amazon, the chain thing wraps around the pipe, three twists and it's off. So about 1 minute is all it takes to snatch a cat. You could also weld a cage around the cat, kind of like a milk carton. Use angle iron, weld a U box, connect the four bottom pieces and make a cross section. Make the ends of the U smaller than the cats diameter so if they manage to cut it, they can't take it out. I'm going to start suggesting this to all the truck owners I know... Lol.

My sister and neighbor had the same experience, got it engraved and week later it was gone. Oddly enough, we all got it engraved at the exact same toyota dealer that the police had put out a flyer for free engraving. Coincidence, no, I think it was an inside job at that toyota dealership. Someone working there or someone there passing on information about the vehicle and location to outside. Did any of us ever hear from police? Nope, never, not a word. How does the $6 come into play?
2000 degree spray paint is 3 to 4 times that!
Edit 12/14/21 : I may have to change my tone here, I bought the $18 2000 degree paint and found out that most of the outer part of the Cat is a shield that does not get near 1600 degrees, and that 500-degree paint might be fine!
Also when I painted mine I got a sheet of 3/4" vinyl letters and numbers from Dollar Tree and used them to put my Vin # on the Cat before painting, after the paint dried I peeled them off and went over them with my etcher. The number is very prominent!
I also got 15' of 5/16" steel cable and wove it around and threw holes in the frame and Cat shield loosely, hiding the cable clamps above the Cat. Anyone who has cut a steel cable with a hacksaw will know how difficult this will be for a thief under your car.

Having been hit twice over the years, nothing short of summary execution will stop converter thieves.
The first time my converter was stolen, my truck was at work. Thieves stole converters off every Toyota truck on the parking lot. Surveillance cameras allegedly must have been made by Sgt Schultz, as they saw nothing, nothing at all.
The second time my new truck was at the dealership for a recall campaign. Instead of parking the truck inside their gated storage lot, it was left outside. Thieves hit close to 15 trucks, stealing all four converters off the V8 powered trucks. Cost of factory new converters and pipes, $4500 per truck.

The legit scrap yards are "required" to vet sellers of scrap with identification. If a scrap yard receives large amounts of catalytic converters that have clearly been sawed off they should report it and supply the police with the recorded finger prints, photos and identifications of the seller. So why is this still going on? The scrap yards are either in on it, the sellers have a connection to bypass the city ordinances or they are going out of city ordinance jurisdiction to sell to smaller "mom & pop" scrap yards that dont care about where the scrap comes from. In the end money talks. Thevies got my catalytic converter about a year ago on a used truck i had bought a couple of years earlier, I came to find out that the one they had cut out and stolen was a replacement installed by the previous owner. When I called the police to file a report, I was advised that it is pretty much a lost cause to hope for justice unless it gains publicity. I guess now is that time.

If your a scrap merchant and some guy says do you want to buy a ton of catalytic converters from a whole bunch of different cars. You’d have to be a complete idiot to not think for a moment that they’re stolen. Even if someone sells the odd one or two, anyone in a business should require some form of proof that these are genuine. Otherwise they’d be as much as a low life as the person who stole it, It’s Fuelling the whole vicious cycle. Catching one criminal gang today doesn’t stop the thefts .

Also requiring vin numbers etc etc for a legal business just makes it harder and more paper work and hoops they have to do to process a cat for sale..
People on the black market will just bypass those laws or and minor solutions.
Best option is buy or have a custom under carriage plate for your car and have them weld a few points. Make sure to leave space for the Oxygen sensor to be removed if need be.
This is like restricting legal gun owners while criminals get guns from the black market, which will always be there, because of such laws.

No, you don't have to always get them welded on. There are rivet on/bolt on (with security heads) kits now for some models that are even easier to install.

I caught one on my cell Camera, I was in my Van, Vanlife, and I hear a Saw going off behind my van, he targeted a Rav4, he made the 1st cut and I started filming him he made the second cut and gets up with it and shoves the Cat in a backpack, gets the saw and goes back away from my van and the Rav4 to his utility truck, got his face and the Truck he took off with.
A few hours later the owner of the Rav4 comes to my van, had the slide door open and asks: did you see anyone mess with my car? I said: Yes I got it all on video. He was so happy and very very thankful. I sent the video to him in a text. 2 hours go by and a cop knocks on my van door asking for a testimony, gave him everything he needed and told him: I hope you catch him.
What I noticed is that the thieves will target a Vehicle that is higher off the ground like a Truck or SUV because a car is too low and needs jacking up, less likely, too much effort and time for these thieves, in that case Weld a thick plate covering the Cat.

You shouldn't cover a catalytic converter. It gives off to much heat and could result in a fire.

@@susanbezio1529 u think u know about this stuff huh! its possible if u dont wrap "Heat Wrap" roll made withheat resistant material and fiberglass, it controls the actual exhaust pipe and Cat. from getting red hot and causing fires. go look it up, Racers wrap it on the Manifold and Motorcyclists wrap their exhaust pipes too

The busts ive seen on a few news channels, there is a HUGE pile of converters. I think they are being collected in bulk and shipped across the southern boarder hidden among other random scrap metal or put in shipping containers being sold outside of the US. Thats my guess.

    • @ronhaworth5808
      @ronhaworth5808 2 года назад +1

I keep telling people that but they won't believe me. The cops caught thieves with over 8000 of them in Kent WA recently and another theft ring in Oregon had trafficked 44,000 of them. Nobody brings that many into a local scrap dealer. In both cases "out of state" buyers were buying them.

Local radio ad “you work hard for your cats, get the most you can for them at XYZ recycling” I’m thinking “well, that’s not shady at all”. The VIN thing is a good idea but it would have to be stamped in, a couple of passes with a grinder would erase markings made with a buzz pencil engraver.
