This was great and so helpful. My maple (not actually sure if it's an Amur or trident maple yet) is 1 or 2 years behind this one, and extremely similar structure, so this was so helpful. Thank you!

Nice video and trees! Yeah,in Eastern Europe where I live the most common and invasive (not native) maple is Manitoba/Boxelder.Others like sycamore maple and Norway ones aren't like that. They grow beside railways and fences, even on roofs sometimes.Manitobas are great as bonsai, although they are hardy and have composed and large leaves.🌤️💡🤭

I know what you mean, it's kind of funny how wrapped up we get and having the perfect bonds I soil when the reality is that these trees will grow in just about anything. The girl like weeds! I've seen them growing in puddles and swamps and sand and cracks in the sidewalk. LOL

The thing about soil is does it drain. The reality is you could use small plastic beads as soil. Just as long as it drains and you feed it. Box elders though, so they are interesting. Like any maple, uneven root proportions equals uneven leaf sizes across the tree. So long as the roots are balanced like any maple they will reduce. As well as any other maple defoliating the first flush will reduce as well. Unlike other maples however, they do not reduce sizs first, they reduce leaflet frequancy. Before the leaves shrink (considerably) they will reduce to one leaflet and end up looking like a larger less chaoticly serated amur maple leaf. Sadly this makes a lot of people form the opinion that they are not worth working with. However if you stick too it over time in maturity when the roots are seriously perfected, then the glory comes out. Fully segmented tiny leaves. Ive seen them in nature growing in sandy areas fully miniature boxelded leaves. Looks so cool. Like tiny sumac.

@@BonsaiBoise one thing i wanted to point out, where some of your larger branches intersect your starting to get swelling. This happens when more then 3 branchs intersect and the bulge will grow expotentially making a swollin reversed taper. I usually just take the longest less bifrucated branch of the pair and yup. Lol.

Nice video! Looks great! I just found this tree in my town today and got some seeds. Can't wait to Bonsai one. What type of substrate do you like for these maples?

Thank you! They LOVE freely draining soil. I use a mix of roughly 40% perlite, 40% safety absorb and 20% pine bark.
