Elkie Brooks - Fool if you think its over. This has to be one of those songs which hasn’t dated at all. She’s got such a beautiful voice and comes across like the true professional and talented singer she is. Fantastic Elkie. Perfection
She stayed loyal to her British roots, not everyone wants fame in mad America. Im a big fan of our British Elkie Brooks, seen her in concert many times she is a British treasure. Better than the like of Adele who has got far too big for her boots, America is welcomed to her, no doubt when her career dries up in America she will come back to Britain as many of them have and do.
My wife was one of your biggest fans Elkie, just before she passed away I surprised her when I took her to see you at the Embassy Skegness. Something I'll always remember.
Reminds me of lazy quiet Sundays back in the early 80s with school the next day. Shops closed. No mobiles etc tape on standby for the top 40 countdown. Miss those days so much.
Only just discovered her today really. My oh my, what a voice this girl has! Elkie you can be assured that you're legacy will live with this 20 year old lad from Salford - forever!
I just adore this gorgeous lady. Her singing sends me to another place. This song is from her "Pearls" album, 1981. If you like her, and don't already have the album, go buy it . You'll thank me.
Cris Rea became very popular in ireland eventhough he had no connection to the country. he even named one of his albums "Shamrock Diaries" Elkie Brooks also became super popular in Ireland and most university students had a cassette of hers.
Wonderful stuff. I remember seeing this performance on TOTP as a kid ..totally fell in love with the song. Heard Chris Rea's original version later -still can't decide which one I prefer.
This was taped on the Tops Of The Pops program on the 11th of August 1982. To underline how good Elkie's cover version is/was , when she finished taping this performance, she was approached backstage by a fan, who Elkie soon intuited was in fact Chris Rea (who wrote and performed the original version in 1978 ) incognito, asking for her autograph.
She lip synced the performance, that is not an insult as ToTP was lip synced from the very first episode in the early 60s due to then the terrible acoustics of where it was first recorded, a deconsecrated church, and then time restraints. So what was heard was the album version so he did have the reason to do what you said as it was a great version.
@@Dermacrosis Just for clarification, he already had heard her version when he received a free copy of Elkie's album weeks earlier and was very impressed but he just could not meet her due to their respective busy schedules...but on the day of her TOTP taping , he was free ...so he went but he was heavily disguised.....apparently Elkie only realised it was Chris a few days later.
Saw Elkie live in the early with 70's with Vinegar Joe - raucous, beautiful, dynamic, captivating. Stellar artist! God bless you, Elkie wherever you may be. Remember Bangor University gig?
Those years we could only listen to a song. No video clips or RUclips. so we used to imagine how an artist was performing and believe me listening was enough .Elkie Brooks a remarkable amazing voice.
@Isleofskye: Chris Rea's is the original version, which he wrote for his younger sister when she was dumped by her first boyfriend at 17, but it didn't get much in the charts. Elkie's version got more chart success.
This Yank happened to be in Liverpool in Dec. '81 and Jan. '82. This song, plus songs by Shakin' Stevens, Human League, Ronnie Milsap, and a reggae group that did "If You Want to Be Happy for the Rest of Your Life, Never Make a Pretty Woman Your Wife" all seemed to debut during that period. And what a wonderful period it was! Each song had frequent radio play.
Very pretty- this is my first time listening to this rendition. i love it. the song bring back so many memories of the time. who would have thought i would be listing this and at the same time experiencing a pandemic. gosh i could be dead tomorrow. lost of friends have died or have not experienced this pandemic crap. no matter what or who sings the song- it hits home every time.
I was watching this on TOTP and was absent from my night class... LOL. Those were the good old times. Thank you for the music Ms. Brookes. BTW, I passed my studies.. ;)
I saw her live in the New Theatre, Cardiff on Sunday night just gone, &9 years young and if anything her voice was stronger. Enegetic, talented and dancing about like a teenager on speed. Go see her live you will not be disappointed.
Happy Birthday Elkie Brooks born on February 25, 1945. She is an English rock, blues and jazz singer. She was a vocalist with the bands Dada and Vinegar Joe, and later became a solo artist. She gained her biggest success in the late 1970's and 1980's, releasing 13 UK Top 75 singles, and reached the top ten with Pearl's a Singer, Sunshine After the Rain and the title track of the album No More the Fool. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elkie_Brooks
What a great choice to cover. Chris Rea is dynamite. I've never heard anyone cover that song except me. This girl is great. her voice fits that song so well.
She’s criminally underrated- a staggering talent and still touring and releasing albums
Just watched her live last night absolutely outstanding.
Agreed; and still looks amazing too!
Absolutely. Awesome voice. I absolutely love her. She has just turned 79…
Sang with Robert Palmer in Vinegar Joe...another great voice..
I agree with you. One 8fvthe greatest female singers from the UK
First saw elkie fronting vinegar joe with robert palmer..
Blown away...forever!!!....
She added a woman’s touch to this. I remember this when I was a little boy. Bravo
Elkie Brooks - Fool if you think its over.
This has to be one of those songs which hasn’t dated at all.

Fantastic Elkie.
Perfection
Just learned in tiktok that she turned down what’s love got to do with it which was a big hit for Tina turner
Without doubt, the most underrated female singer Britain has produced. It's criminal she didn't make it in the States.

The musical godmother of Adele, AmyW, and others ...
“making it” in the “States” is not an ultimate goal.
And Dana Gillespie
She did a fine job with this song. Beautiful voice. Love this.
One of the best songs ever by Chris Rea and Elkie Brooks knocks it out of the park, Great version by Elkie.
I want those days of my life back again!
Dont we all
Me too
If only !
If only..
My wife was one of your biggest fans Elkie, just before she passed away I surprised her when I took her to see you at the Embassy Skegness. Something I'll always remember.
Still adore this 2023 ❤❤
I love both Chris and Elkie's versions.
Both Chris and Elkie sang good versions of Fool If You Think It's Over.
I'm right with you there I like both versions as well.
This song brings tears to my eyes ... it just brings back a lot of great memories, I will never get tired of listening to it.
does me too
Only Elkie Brooks could have pulled off a cover version of this quality; I bet even Chris Rea loves this!
Totally agree with you.
I think you nailed that one.
Defo
Fool If You Think It's Over is a song I know by heart and this version by Elkie in 1982 is a decent enough one.
@@grahampearson5670 Its an EXCELLENT cover.

Went to see the lovely lady colston hall .best night ever cheers James
So very hard to cover a song yet still make it your own. Elkie pulled it off.
She didn’t try and match him….She just sang it her way.
One of the most beautiful songs in the world!

Yeah. I remember once sitting in a dentist's chair and he had the radio on. Lilac Wine was playing in the background while he filled my teeth!
Great artist. Love her voice and style. Recently saw her in concert. Terrific.
She's such a silky smooth bluesy tone..gorgeous
Happy Birthday. To the UK's finest female singer.

Saw her last night in concert and she raised the roof
HELL NO!!! Buy Chris Rea's album. His version is MUCH better.
I adore her too, I used to listen to that album a must if you haven’t heard it

Chris Rea’s Mother was Irish .
When she sings this , it makes me shiver, a lovely voice doing justice to a great tune.
what a talent! what a woman!
A superb cover of the great Chris Rea's Fool if you think its over. Bravo!!! They both have very similar gravelly voices too.
Elkie looks positively svelte here. Beautiful lady; great singer.

I am from Los Angeles and have never heard of Elkie before I found this, just awesome! Great cover I like it just as much as Cris' version.
Big name in the UK back in the day and still touring. Never made it here in the US.
Beautiful voice - this lady can sing unlike a lot of today's wannabe's.
Yeah. Cindy Lauper’s 7 octaves aren’t real.....
This is horrible. Chris Rea sings this song far better.
@@tarstarkusz This is just a different version, enjoy it.
Brilliant song sung with feeling. Love it.
That's for real!
Only one way to describe Elkie - the best!
