I laugh when I see something that has been installed in a previous episode sitting unfinished - the table is in a time warp LOL. An amazing achievement.
It's nice to have a friend that is a talented metal worker like Jeff to help out. That crowning of the windlass was a great idea for additional strength.
You guy's are so super reliable. I wait for you every Thursday around 8.30 pm New Zealand time. And there you are. Thank you. I am getting impatient now as I am sure you are. I've been here since the concrete was put into the balest. So I'm sure I can wait a while longer for your journey to begin. I look forward to next week every week.
Not scuffed anything up for years, you did a great job. I binge watched some of the early episodes and oh my, the changes are astonishing! Right from Garret with dreadlocks and Ruthie in dresses , even swabb has changed. This is becoming a social history class as well as a mighty fine boat project.
You really need a friend with a sand blaster box for these projects.I have also seen vids where people soaked those rusty parts in molasses and it did a surprising job. Not sure how it would do on the other metals. Turned out great though. I have seen where other boats used a battery operated drill with the right fitting to run big windlass winches like that.
Molasses ! As a paint stripper ? Well, I'll be damned ! Never heard about that ! Gotta try it come spring time on my boat trailer ! As for a sand blast box, I fully agreed. Actually, a softer media blaster for aluminum parts. 👍
Yep, I was wishing I could put some of those windlass parts in our bead blaster. And use a shop press on the bushings. But look how much Garrett & Ruth have done with what they have available!
You are so lucky to have a metal head on your team. I like how all your help has been super focused on their projects they have accomplished. Your blend of super talented deck hands has matched the blending of your obscure and beautiful wood. Your boat will sail on the wind of all the combined energy created by the entourage of people, building materials, parts of old ships, and forgotten tales.
Love the Purpleheart amd Wenge trim boards. Great job on the windless too. Coming right along. Can hardly wait to see more sheets showing up and going aloft.
paint some day glow orange stripes on the windlass crank.. and paint anchor windless crank on both sides of the crank.. so anybody in the future will know what it is in seconds. paint the crank mounting area on windlass orange also.. i loved going to minnies.. my friends boat... we bought a windlass of a 165 foot mine sweeper that was being dismantled. got the twin rudders also.. putting those rudders in was a major operation.. what was neat.. you could go hard over on the wheel.. both engines ahead... the bow would make a 30 foot circle as the stern swung like a baseball bat.. when we installed the naval bronze windlass. it weighed over a thousand pounds as i recall. we had a steel structure under it. once we fit it properly.. we Epoxied it in place. along with massive bolts. 20 years later when my friends boat sunk.. i could see it on google earth.. somebody actually cut the bow off to get the windlass off.. there must have been some fish turning blue with the work it took to remove that windlass from the foredeck. i miss that boat...
When Garret was beating on the windlass with a hammer, I started waiting for the break. "Looks like somebody hammered it, or tried to hammer it", Garret looks embarrassingly into the camera.
Hi Ruthie & Garrett ! Couldn't tell in the later phases if you just wire brushed or sanded the internal gearing components to get rust off them... was going to suggest yo let it clean itself by using a polishing compound like what's used in engine assy for breaking in cams, or maybe even slightly coarser ? You can apply to both gears and just turn them in place which should allow the meshing action of gears to polish away the worst of old rust. Wipe off the excess polishing compound once you're able to see clean metal and replace the polishing compound with regular ( a marinized spec ) grease.
Ruthie and Garrett you both are really good. The windlass is an iconic treasure. The handrails and bulkhead pieces look great. If you could have sandblasted the windlass before painting would have maybe been better. I think the windlass was from the 1960’s. A great find and like you said built really simple yet strong. Well done all around. 👍⛵️🏝
Admire you both a great deal for your ingenuity, perseverance, vision, and talent! Love the parade of gifted peeps you bring along as well! Fun to watch!!!!
I had fallen asleep watching another boaters show and I woke have way through my FAVORITE show SALT & TAR or better known as the Aventures of Swab & Crew... and thought you had an interesting new heavy duty food grinder to put in the galley but then I thought maybe it's an Art project you were going to paint with many colors.. ????????? Ohhh I guess it helps to start at the beginning of the episode to know that is was a windlass ... REALLY CLEANED UP NICE and will look awesome on Rediviva .!!
Hi there. As I watched your video I spotted a Patent number on the base of the windlass. If you punch that number into your computer you will find out a lot about it. At least when it was first patented. Just a thought. Love your vids.
I did a similar job fixing up an old manual windlass but I painted white. Black might get quite hot in Mexico. But no denying it looks beautiful. Great job.
Swabs the guy he's obviously mixed as he's got white for feet. He's most definately got a lot of red Kelpie in him. My red dog Murphy very similar. Like my Murphy he's getting old bless him. Your hot the boats fantastic and the hairy buggar. He's done a great job. Fair winds you.three cheers n beers Marty
well, media blasting. aluminium is a soft metal. It needs gentle treatment. Sand would probably be too abrasive. But maybe glass beads- or ice blasting would do the trick.
If I am correct I think you fill that windless with gear oil enough to cover the bottom of the ring gear... that allows the oil to be picked up and dropped on the bronze bearing and keep the inside lubricated... Also the brake inside it is most likely a wet brake... similar to a wet clutch like in motorcycles or a posi-traction on the rear of a car/truck, wet clutch plates..... The oil bath helps keep it cool when your applying it.... Just FYI...but pretty sure I am correct about that..you may want to look more into that.. although I am sure you are weeks ahead since these are usually weeks behind..hahaha.!!
Always a pleasure to see the legendary Rolf .. Windless looks incredible, just hope the handle doesn't stick because you painted it on the machine instead of separately.. But I bet you figured that out already ?? Keep Doing What Your Doing .. Because What Your Are Doing Is Nothing Short Of Amazing
Another great addition to the project completed and waiting to be fitted, the craftsmanship and thought going into the boat is fantastic. I too have re run (Binge watched) your adventure and cannot wait to follow your future adventures on the Blue.
Very nice video. I like the black and yes, it will get hot but you are only touching the handle so maybe you could wrap it with small line for appearance and to cool it? Be sure to confirm that the chain gypsy matches your chain, there are several dimensions of each size chain. There is long link, short link, and welded link as well as grades of steel the chain is made from that are different dimensions. Each manufacturer makes each size chain somewhat differently. Not all 3/8" chain will fit a 3/8" gypsy. Usually we take the chain gypsy to the marine store to match the chain, or you replace the chain gypsy with one that fits the chain you buy (or have). If the chain doesn't fit correctly you will see it right away and your windlass will not pull the chain, the links will jump. It is a common problem when buying new chain.
Ruth, I’ve watched every video and enjoyed them all. Your thoughtful filming and editing have served you well, improving with every posting. Please don’t take this as a criticism… but I can’t speed read. Would it be possible to lengthen the screen time for your text displays? I have to view on my phone so I can easily pause and back up to read them. if not, I’ll continue as I have. If so, I can watch on my big screen where pause and rerun are cumbersome but the view is so much richer.
Great windlass find, I wonder if it wouldn't be a good idea to fit a motor to the windlass where the bevel pinion gear is cranked from and crank then the emergency manual crank drives through the ekectric motor (which is only used if the motor fails) it will probably save you a huge amount of effort... Just an idea to think about. Looks like you scored a really great piece of equipment there 👏 👍
Do you know if you found the proper size deep well socket then grind grooves on opposite sides to engage the cross pen in your input shaft and use one of those adapters for using a electric drill driver for sockets you could effectively have an electric winless even though it’s manual. Since you have a welder you could just use a piece of pipe it’s the right size cutting in the grooves to go over that cross pen weld a cap and a rod to engage into your drill driver‘s truck and again. Also if you found the right jack handle for a scissor jack that wouldn’t be able to engage you could kind of have like a speed wrench it would still be manual but after the connection on the input shaft the tool with simply come straight up and then do a zigzag so you have handles like petals so you could just zip it around real quick.
when my family and I sit down to watch TV together we always look for people who do not cuss in videos. thank you all . it is really hard to raise teenagers to act right.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who constantly has to pull the bit out of the screw and put it back into the driver.
Swab is like a floor rug you have to feed ;-)
I laugh when I see something that has been installed in a previous episode sitting unfinished - the table is in a time warp LOL. An amazing achievement.
"It looked like somebody hammered it" *pan up* 😂
We have a boat and can appreciate your craftsmanship
Trim work is awesome 👌
It must feel great bringing back a quality piece of hardware!!
Hey Garret, I have been married to a woman like Ruthie for 46 years both of us sailors and loving life! You are one lucky SOB!😎
your fabrication chap is amazing thank you to him for helping you.......and thank you too for sharing with us every day gets closer awesome EH!
That purple heart really ties the room together.
I've been wondering about your welding guru. Good to see him again.
Well your getting there it is just a slow going thing... I well be so happy to see you undersail. WOO HOO...
*That man ROSS is one KOOL KAT!..... He really knows his sh_t!.... Props Ross!*
Thank you for the video .
Thank's for all the inspiration, you guys are awesome. ☺☺
Last part was very good and funny.
I instantly heard Smoko Time from Scott Brown Carpentry. Keep up the great work guys
It's nice to have a friend that is a talented metal worker like Jeff to help out. That crowning of the windlass was a great idea for additional strength.
You guys are the best. Thank you for your wit, humanity and cheeriness in a world that seems to have lost the plot! 👍🏼💯🎉⛵️
Epic windlass! Thanks for sharing!
Waking up to some Salt and Tar. Will be a great day today.
really looks nice people

Love the trim and hand rails. And the winch is beautiful
Seems like a can of aerokroil would have been your friend with the windlass. Looking great!
what a great craftsman
Of all the sailing channels on the tube, you guys have the best intro. It always makes us happy to hear it 💕
Excellent service no windlass gives anchor, parabeńs, always whimsical, good winds!
Rolf kicks ass. He's a good dude to know.
Rolf - a true craftsman!
Everything looks so good. ❤️✌️👍
Not scuffed anything up for years, you did a great job.

Right from Garret with dreadlocks and Ruthie in dresses , even swabb has changed.

Rolf is truly a wizard when it comes to fabrication. Such a gifted guy.
Rolf looks good!
"It looked like somebody hammered it..." Hmm, I wonder who that was :)

Good looking windlass. Glad to see it restored.
Nice beefy old windlass. I love simplicity in machines.
Love the Purpleheart amd Wenge trim boards. Great job on the windless too. Coming right along. Can hardly wait to see more sheets showing up and going aloft.
just love the wood colours and grains

Ross is a national treasure. So much knowledge!
love the new ending with the comedy. You are doing what I should have done. Keep going and stick tigether.
Really loving your channel! Keep it up! I'm all in baby!
Such fun watching you bring that great old windless back to life:)
Looking great!
As the closer you two get to finishing the clips feel like they fly bye. And I wait till next week to see what happens next . See you next week
Beautiful job
The black handle on the crank is going to be HOT in the sun.
You are the best love you !
The good kind of crank! God Bless you three!
6:14 I thought the reflection was Gerrets legs and I was so confused 😂😂😂
Beautiful piece of kit... Love how the boat is coming together!!!!
When Garret was beating on the windlass with a hammer, I started waiting for the break. "Looks like somebody hammered it, or tried to hammer it", Garret looks embarrassingly into the camera.

Very nice 👍🏻
I believe there are drill tips that you can put your bit in that have a small ball that clips the bit, but the bit has to have a ridge on it.
Looking good guys
Really enjoyed this video. Keep those smiles going.
The winch looks great.

That windlass looks 100 years old painted black 👍
Bravo
Well looky there, it's the makings of a fine cruising vessel.... love this journey, so appreciate the effort, LUV

next time to help you, you might want to ask Ralph for some sandblasting to clean up stuff.
well, media blasting.
aluminium is a soft metal. It needs gentle treatment. Sand would probably be too abrasive. But maybe glass beads- or ice blasting would do the trick.
@@jfv65 duly noted, there are still some steel/iron components that can be blasted but yes aluminum is too fragile for those methods.

Funny how a wee bit of finishing makes the job look 10 times better, some smartass somewhere will have a formula for that!
That was awesome. Great job! I could watch your videos all day!!
Secret to dissimilar metals. An assembly grease called STL8. Miracle stuff from gas and oil plants in Fort Mcmurray, AB, CANADA
*Lets go sailing!*
Rolf - Don't paint this part
Garret - Nods
Ruth - Proceeds with the painting.
Ruthie wins again! :)
🤣🤣🤣

Sweet !
lovin the mash up of different timbers, really suits your fine crusing vessel.
You can take some of the saw dust and mix it with epoxy putty to bend in better with screw plugs cover up
Haha at 18:59 Rolf reminded me of Popeye and Garret of Bluto :)

Get a 3/4 in chordless drill(not impact) to operate the winch
Have you thought about low speed food grade electric motor on the crack shaft ?
when my family and I sit down to watch TV together we always look for people who do not cuss in videos. thank you all . it is really hard to raise teenagers to act right.
Guess that’s why they call “joinery”, joinery🙂
nice
👍
I'm sure there's a sand blaster somewhere in the marina... would've been easier than sanding
The more rim you put on, the less total room you have !!!
Boo! Happy Halloween!
