A baby giraffe can normally stand on its own after an hour. If this indeed took so long, there was obviously something wrong with the baby. Nature is tough. Only the fittest survive.

I wonder what was wrong with the baby. It could not only not stand up, it also died overnight as it seems.

I apologize if my tone hurt you, and i admit your aguments have a certain weight, unlike those of many people posting here... Now, i do understand that nature can seem cruel to us sometimes, but i think it is wrong to interfere in its cycles, no matter what. We human beings have evolved today in a way that we are for the most part out of touch with nature, and we cannot really comprehend its ways. I am fine with rescuing orphaned animals, though ; but i would not prevent a predator from feeding.
There was something wrong with the calf before the hyena showed up. Injured, sick or deformed animals do not live, and there is nothing you can do about it. The hyenas have to eat too and the mother giraffe will have a healthy baby next time. Besides that, it looks like the baby was already dead.

What giraffe did not do is sitting down and giving milk to the calf. The calf would have been then strong enough to stand up. Nature is such only the fittest survives. With its tiny brain the giraffe never could think of someting more than what it is uspposed to do.
I think that with the exception of lions, adult giraffes have no enemies. I mean, its obvious from this video that a pack of hygenas can't take on an adult giraffe, neither can a leopard, cheetah or pack of wild dogs. What else is left? Those are the most dangerous predators in Africa.

Shhhhhhh, don't judge my contradictions. They are scavengers, and damn good ones, but they are not exclusively scavengers, and are very brutal and powerful predators at the same time.
I agree...Unfortunately, we, humans, think it another way.So many and strong predator... vs just one baby?! Damn ! So unfair...Many people are still horrified by the brutal raping kids to death by the Turkish empire, centuries ago.Now, the way I see it, this is almost the same situation...

Not scavengers, Hyenas do more hunting then Lions in fact, turn off "The Lion King" and read a book sometime.I personally love it when a Hyena clan chases a lion pride off a kill, I realize Lions are important scavengers in the animal food chain, but I still hat them with a passion :)
Nothing sad about this video. A disabled baby giraffe became lunch for the hyena pups. I was actually kind of happy it didnt die in vain. In nature everything takes its course.

There was no real logic behind my comment - just personal feel.
But if you want some logic then just look at the birth-rates, look at how many dogs a hyena can give life to with one litter (up to 4 after 1/3 year) and then look at the giraffe littering one single child after 14 months.
and if this "one against many" doesn't satisfy you by now: it's not okay to give a dog anti-worm treatment? them worms have no right to live?

Well 1 sick baby is gone and a whole clan can feed for a week and they will live for another day ! Giraffe try again in 2 years time ! May be a healthy one next time ! Life harsh and cruel but no room for sick retarded or deformed unfit and weak for life. Unlike humans no matter what we keep them a life so suffer through life ! Humans should learn from animals ! Yes it's said and may be even harsh butt that would be the most humane thing to do !

please help me to understand why the filmer is able to not intervene. i myself would try to secure the baby giraffe at any effort, maybe rifle-ing all the dogs away. i don't understand.
Film crews gain access to the filming license and promise not to interfere. To film all you need is a crew of 2~3 people, a jeep and cameras. However, if you do decide to interfer, then you also need medical personal, bigger transportation, medical equipment, support crew, and a team of 10 people, money to hire the locals. For what? save one sick animal, by tramping the place with large footprint? How many animal you decide to save? If you decide to save 10, 20, 100, before long the place bacame a crowded tourist market place, which would cause the shrinking of the national park and drive animals to even smaller area, cause more starvation and extinction of the animal.

Que triste. A mãe girafa lutou, se expôs ao perigo pra proteger o filhote o tanto que pôde. Acredito que bebê girafa deve ter nascido doente.
If there was medical treatments available to this calf, I am sure the calf should have survived. Human should help younger animals to survive by intervention, and no baby animals should be killed.
