  • FREE Potatoes Taste Even Better! | Superb Volunteer Potato Harvest 2021 | Guten Yardening
    The time has come when we are finally able to harvest our volunteer potatoes. This is the first time we have ever had volunteer potatoes appear in our garden. We missed these potatoes in the ground from our massive potato harvest last year. These potatoes survived a zone 5 winter and provided us with the earliest potato growth. We were super excited to see them appear, but the question became, what would production from these potatoes look like?
    When we released our video introducing those potatoes, those who commented who had had them appear before said that most of the time the resulting potatoes were not large or there was a disappointing harvest, so we were really interested to see what the result from this harvest would be.
    This video shows two separate harvests taking place 3 weeks apart. The first harvest is of the volunteer potatoes that we transplanted into grow bags. The second harvest, from earlier this week, is of the volunteer potatoes that we allowed to stay in the ground.
    In this video you will see a Norland Red potato harvest and a Yukon Gold potato harvest.
    We hope you enjoy this harvest, and as you will see, find some value in allowing your volunteer potatoes to grow to full maturity.
    Thank you for watching!

      Our pleasure! Thank you for watching. Harvesting potatoes/sweet potatoes is the highlight of our harvesting season. This year we grew Magic Molly Potatoes for the first time and had a very good yield for potatoes grown in shallow containers. Here is the link to that video: ruclips.net/video/8qilYht6H2k/видео.html. We also have potatoes growing in our greenstalk vertical garden and they are almost ready to be harvested. Stay tuned and thanks again for watching and commenting. We love to hear from you!

      Thank you so much for watching. We had never had volunteer potatoes before this year, but based on these results, we will be keeping them in the ground instead of translplanting them if we have them again next season. :)

    I got volunteer potatoes by putting potato peels in my compost and then dumping the unfinished compost on my beds to over winter. I got volunteer russets in both beds the following spring and got quite a few potatoes off each plant.

      Oh, how interesting! If there is enough of the potato left, I could definitely see them growing, but that is really amazing they they survived the winter as well. We loved our russets this season, and I think we will definitely be growing more next year. Well done!

      @@GutenGardening I was totally shocked by it, believe me. It took me a little while to recognize that I had a potato plant growing between my green beans. The one bed is 36 inches tall, and I'm not sure I got all of the spuds out. I'll have to see what happens this spring. I'm doing another experiment because of it. I cured some potato peels--let them dry out and planted them in grow bags topped with a heap of dry grass and set them out to over winter outside. Can't wait to see what happens with that next spring.

    Note to self: You'll never harvest ALL of them! Love those volunteers.

      Ha! True. I think growing in containers is the only way to guarantee a complete harvest. :D Lovely free food for sure.

    Team sweet potato, sadly not easy to grow in zone 4, Canada. I get really small but delicious tubers :)

    • @GutenGardening
      @GutenGardening  2 года назад +2

      Team sweet potato is a fantastic team! I know they don't grow easily in those lower zones, and I think even zone 5 has a shorter growing time than we would like. How have you grown them in the past? In ground or containers or some other way?

    • @MissWonderGirlz
      @MissWonderGirlz 2 года назад

      I have grown them in ground (and failed) and in plastic containers. I think the soil warms up faster in containers, so they grow better.
      I can’t wait to see yours !

    I just buried some store bought potatoes that sprouted in my kitchen in my containers to see if they will survive the winter. We'll see.

      You never know for sure, but the fact that these survived and did so well for us, I wouldn't be surprised at anything at this point. :D Good luck!
