    The Sodium acetate crystals I used in this demonstration can be made from the reaction of Baking soda and Vinegar. However, I bought the ones used in this video.

    Dr. B, I saw this in chem class...years ago. They used common NaCl... What major difference would there be between using sodium acetate and NaCl such an experiment? just wondering. DVD:)

    • @wbreslyn
      @wbreslyn  2 года назад +1

      Probably that Sodium acetate is much more soluble, especially in relation to increased temperature. They probably used Sodium thiosulfate which also increases in solubility with temperature. Interestingly, NaCl doesn't dissolve much better in warm water.

      @@wbreslyn Umm true the High School reference sheet does show in the saturation graphs that NaCl is almost constant...horizontal line, zero slop.... Guess they just kept it simple...Many thanks Dr. B!!

      Yeah, that always surprises me about NaCl and the sol graph. Sugar on the other hand changes considerable with temp.

    Would this be similar to how super-cooled water works how if you hit it, it freezes, or is this something else?

    • @wbreslyn
      @wbreslyn  2 года назад +1

      Interesting question! It is similar in many ways since we are ultimately looking at the arrangement of the molecules. In both cases we have an unstable system. I have a short video of the water freezing - it looks very similar to the video with the Sodium acetate salt video.

    We use supersaturated potassium iodide to block the thyroid uptake of certain radioactive tracers. Who said chemistry and physiology wasn’t cool?!

      @@wbreslyn yes when we perform DaT scans in nuclear medicine we will give the patient Lugol’s solution or SSKI (supersaturated potassium iodide), which in turn blocks the thyroid from taking up the radioactive I-123. We want to see certain structures within the brain without radiating the thyroid bed. It’s pretty cool! Professor B, I just want to personally thank you for your videos. Your expertise helped me be successful in many chemistry courses over the last two years. You are greatly appreciated sir💕

      It would taste very, very salty I would expect. So the effect would be the same as eating a bunch of salt.
