I will say one thing: Most times, I will say you play the game to win. Pettiness is secondary to winning, even if something is unnecessary. That being said, keeping a 56-0 shutout by icing a kicker last second *is* rather insanely petty. It's absolutely fine to actually do, but I will call it petty.

Make up your mind. You are playing the game or not. You wanna try and score points on the last play, then there is nothing wrong trying to prevent them from scoring on the last play. It is petty to only try to break up a shutout and not care about winning. So if they are going to be petty and try to break up the shut out then I would do anything to show them they are losers.

The thing is they're both right. Winning by any (legal) means necessary is more important than pettiness, but you can absolutely call something petty when it is.

I disagree with Mike but I love listening to it anyway! If GA State wants to play to the bitter end Penn State has the right to too. I have no problem with the FG attempt, and PSU has no obligation to make it easy. If you're gonna play to the end, the other team can too. Nevertheless, I'm thankful for another Francesca rant!

Whether it's a 56-0 or 56-3 win doesn't move the needle even a little. If you don't agree with Mike, you don't know sports--period. You shouldn't even be commenting.
Anytime someone wins by that big, the winner--not the loser--should be embarrassed.
Besides, running up the score gives your team a false sense of accomplishment.
I agree 100% with Mike on the field goal situation. Hard to say Penn State specifically is wrong for playing Georgia State though. All of these top Power Five schools play cupcakes at different points of the season, especially early. SEC teams like Bama play them early then the second to last game of the year also which is completely absurd and makes zero sense.

The real question is why wasn't the kicking team vilified for attempting a field goal at the end of the game just to avoid a shutout? So they lose by 53 instead of 56 big fucking deal. I'm no PS fan but if I'm the coach damn right I'm going for the shutout that's the kind of mentality you need to WIN.

Lol preventing a scrub school from getting three points by icing their kicker in a 56-0 embarrassment mismatch of a game that shouldn't have been scheduled to begin with is not the mentality you need to win anything real, that's completely asinine🤣. If it was you would have your third and fourth string guys prepared on where to line up on a FG attempt, which literally every player that's played defense knows how anyway. Even if they did get a shutout no one gives AF if you shutout Georgia State anyway. That's not impressive whatsoever. And clearly Penn State is not doing well with this "kind of mentality you need to WIN" with Barkley and McSorley now gone. Team has 12 wins the last two years, including a losing season last year🤣. Franklin is a bad in-game coach that's made catastrophic mistakes regularly in key games. Winning is done by executing in big moments in big games and preparing correctly to do so and overcoming adversity, not pounding trash schools.
Franklin is one of the worst coaches as far as sportsmanship and expectation are concerned. Ice kickers less and beat Michigan or Ohio St. more.

I see why you would get mad at James Franklin for icing the kicker at 56-3. But I mean if you have a chance at a shutout you take it, You don't give the team 3 points and ruin the chance at a shutout.
No, you don't do that. If it mattered you might as well keep your first team out there all game, on offense as well, to run the score up to 100-0 and not put in your fourth team at all, which obviously you wouldn't do. Or you would have your third and fourth string defensive guys prepared to line up properly beforehand (like every player that played defense already knows how to do anyway) because their field goal block performance late in blow outs matters so much. You dominated the game when it was a game. No need to stick it to anyone, especially some scrub school you have no negative history with.
Franklin Called a timeout because it was fourth down and instead of going for it on 4th and 1 the coach of Georgia state sends on his FG unit. If he is trying to ruin a shut out why can't James Franklin Ice the kicker. He didn't make the playioff last year because he was kind to the little teams he played. This year is his year to do it he has saquon barkley in his last year, and he is going to do whatever he can to prove to the selection committee that they deserve to be in the playoff.

These are not paid athletes, but college students who play for no reason other than for the love of the game. Yes, Franklin is within the rules to try to keep a shutout against volunteer athletes who were severe underdogs, but I have every right to look at him as human excrement for trying to humiliate his opponent by kicking them when they are down.
It's called having class. Sometimes the human side of things come into play. And margin of victory against non-FBS teams don't count, so that argument is invalid.
