I feel Marceline watching the Ice King and knowing Simon as he used to be would be similar to having a parent or loved one with Alzheimer's or severe dementia. It's sad and so well written.
Her attempts to connect at him are beautiful. She just accepts him as is. Getting into Fionna & Cake stories, playing basketball, taking Bubblegum to his kingdom for dinner etc.
Pendleton Ward based the Ice King on his grandfather who has/had Alzheimer's so this is spot-on :)

This show is better written than most live action shows as well as animated. There's a lot of philosophy beneath the candy coated exterior and I love it.
It's going to be very interesting to see what the upcoming Fiona and Cake show does too, since Simon's going to be a major character.

Just saying but i think the scene where simon tries to bring betty back with a wish from prismo and doesnt manage to do it, is one of the most heartbreaking i have ever scene
Agreed. It's so sad. Finally, Simon gets freed from the Ice Crown, but can't see Betty anymore. It's tragic.

The beautiful thing about Ice King's arc is that he DOES become a protagonist by the end of the series. Any animosity between him and anyone else withers away and in his last appearances he is fully devoted to supporting the people he wants to like him.

I’m writing so I don’t forgot so I’ve been rewatching stuff, and realized something from a comment, If we remember magics man wife was wiped out of existence completely, what if Betty and Magic’s man wife had the same fate where they had to sacrifice themselves in order to save the planet they’re in
I like to think that if Simon never found the crown & the mushroom wars never happened, eventually Simon & Betty would have found a young Marceline not too long after her mother died, and they would adopt her as their daughter, it would have been nice if Simon, Betty & Marcy could have been a family together, but then this series might not have been as multi-faceted or had such deep lore to it.

when simon begins to change does that mean theres two ice elementals? seeing how patience wouldve been chosen if not already frozen
my fav moment is when finn has the hermit eyes and changes ice king to simon visually as the show goes you can see everyone change in view to the ice king
The crown doesn't turn the wearer into the ice elemental, Patience St. Pim froze herself in ice for a thousand years and prevented any future ice elementals from being born. The ice crown just grants the wearer ice magic and total insanity

- he lost his real parents for 16 years
- his parents split up
- his mom is a clone now (real Minerva died trying to save people then clones herself)
- Finn then got abandoned as a baby before being adopted by Joshua and Margaret
- Finn also lost his arm twice

- his dad disappeared in to space somewhere
@@arinhossain2100 Didn't Ice King went through a Nuclear War that killed almost all of his friends and family as well having his mind and consciousness being enslaved by a magical crown which causes other people including his fiance to be repulsed by him, leaving him alone even before the Mushroom Bomb detonated? Then, when he has too struggle everyday to keep his sanity intact and not fall completely to the influence of the crown in order to not endanger Little Marceline's life and in the same time protect her and himself from the dangers of the aftermath of the explosion. He is also forced to separate himself from the only company he has left once he realizes he is going to become a threat to her. He spent 1000 years of his mind being trapped and body being enslaved by the Ice King persona, making him do a lot of bad things that he regrets deeply and wishes that people would forgive him. Note that for a 1000 years of his life, Simon probably thinks Betty died hating him and when he finally got Betty back, she sacrifices herself for him to merge with GOLB in order to protect him and also in the process, erasing her existence from every universe. Even with his mind is back, he is silently suffering from this loss after the show ended until the new spin-off series, Fiona and Cake will hopefully resolve it.
