I think it's best to situate the tasting with the lowest proof first. The higher proof tends to attack the palate and reduces the ability to taste lower proof.
Agree about the high proof numbing the taste buds. I think every second tasting will be weaker than the first. If you have 2 shots of the same whisky the second one will always be easier to on the palate and less flavorful.
I don't believe these guys can smell what they think they are smelling. I would love to do a double blind tests with these bourbon channels hosts BUT put the same bourbon in all of them and see how they make up "notes".
In a way it’s no big surprise as Kurt is a big wild turkey brand fan showing that fact in many of his previous videos so when filling out your brackets you have to remember it it just isn’t about your taste buds. That’s the wonderful thing about bourbon everybody has their personal taste and you don’t need to take out a loan to buy a good every day bourbon for yourself
Wild Turkey and Old Foresters are almost always gonna win out vs the other lines (with Kurt). It will be interesting when an OF and WT go head to head though.
Yeah I have WT101 and Russels Reserve going far in my brackets. I knew Kurt favored them and knew the Buffalo Trace products while good, are overrated.
Love that you're doing this. Can't wait to see your reactions. But one reason I like this kind of thing is that it takes so much of the FOMO out of the allocated bourbons. There is PLENTY of good, available bourbon on the shelf.
I’ve gone through 2 1/2 bottles of Blantons original and 1/2 bottle of Blantons gold and i will say that the first bottle of original was “underwhelming” but the second bottle and 1/2 of the 3rd is much bolder and better. Not sure of the consistency of their recipes but the difference was night and day. Gold is 🔥 pure fire. If you get a chance to pickup blantons gold i highly recommended it. Also, love your channel and have learned a lot from you all. The hunter has become one of my favorite cocktails. Cheers and happy St. Patrick’s day ☘️
I think Blanton’s and Eagle Rare get a bad rap because of the “Over Hyped”, unavailable’, and over priced labels. The reason they are unavailable and expensive is because they are such good easy drinking bourbons for those of us that like easy sippers and don’t always want a high proof and/or bourbons that punch you in the face and have a harsh finish. I used to get Eagle for $21.50 a bottle so had cases of it. Now you can’t find it. Why? Because it WAS such a value. Now, not worth $100. 101 and Double Oak both great bourbons, available, and affordable. As always, great show.
I've had Blanton's a few times and I'm always underwhelmed for all the hype it receives. It's not bad, but I'm just not going out of my way to try and hunt the few bottles that pop up here in my area.
I ran into 2 bottles so far and didn't even thunk to ask how much because I knew it's around 60 to 80 bucks lol 150 I will not pay. So I still don't have it
It is just the new 'it' juice on the hype trend train.Blantons has been around for decades and no one was crazy for it until just a couple years ago. It was always there on shelves. That is until the hype programming infects the hive. The past couple of years it is now like the Tickle Me Elmo of the Bourbon world. Just like overnight in 2010 Pappy became the trend. When Pappy has also been around for decades and no one thought it special. It sat on store shelves even when it was Stitzle weller produced. I also used to go to Total Wine around 2011 and see the lesser line, the Old Rip Van Winkle 107 and 90 proof, both in squatty bottles still at that time, for 35$.They had entire rows of them on the shelf and it was no big deal....Same with standard Pikesville rye. That was a standard 30$ bottle and nothing sensational, good, but nothing unicorn piss status. Then it won a award a couple years ago...next thing you know overnight it disappears off shelves.Everyone magically thinks it is instantly better than it is, by way of a plecebo effect.Tasting things in it they would otherwise not taste had it not won an award. Then it goes from 30$ to 60$ a bottle like clockwork and everyone sings its praise. The Blantons hype train will die down when the next 'it' Bourbon is announced to take its place....Heck,if they make Jim Beam white label win an award, you can then watch as overnight it will be thought of as the new best tasting. Everyone would stop making fun of it and praise it and so on....that is how this whole hype train rolls.
Just tried my WT101 alongside Blantons. Couldn’t disagree with you more. Guess that’s why everyone’s palate is different. Next year you need three tasters on each round to compensate for different palates
Totally agree. 101 is fine, but I find it to be substantially less balanced and to caramelly in comparison to Blanton’s. People love to hate Blanton’s because it’s fun to hate what became popular, but Blanton’s is a solid dram. Is it “worth it”?!? That up to you to decide. Is it good? Heck yes.
I have yet to find or try Blanton's. I did pick up the WT101 a while back and the first couple of times thought it was meh but I had it again this weekend watching football and thought it was really good.
Blanton’s doesn’t do well for me in blind tests either as it’s more subtle and lower proof. Blanton’s is best to sit down with a big pour and each sip gets better as you get into it and in the end I find it very complex, just not at first.
Was on a cruise last week and got excited seeing Blanton’s because I never had it. Ordered it neat and went down smooth. I’m glad I tried it and paid $18 for a double then paying a crazy price for a bottle if I even came across it.
I wonder how much tasting comparisons in general are influenced by which bourbon you sample first. I'm not suggesting Blanton's would have won but I can see how it comes across as a bit bland after the 101.

Yesterday I bought Blanton’s @ $119. Now, I know it’s WAY overpriced, but I wanted one bottle for my bar “just because”. It’s probably the last one I’ll ever buy. Rare Breed is better IMO at 1/3rd the price, but now Rare Breed is recently impossible to find. Local store has a store pick Makers 46 French Oaked that’s next on my list One thing I have found is that certain stores have far better availability on certain distilleries. Our local store sells a lot of Buffalo Trace products so he gets Eagle Rare and Blanton’s on a semi regular basis. Stores that don’t sell much Buffalo Trace may never get the allocated ones I suspect the individual tree that the barrel is made from may affect the flavor quite a bit, so that alone could change the flavor batch to batch

Kinda funny, I’ve bought bottles of both Blanton’s and Eagle Rare-once. I always have a bottle of Wild Turkey 101 around, and I do like Woodford’s Double Oaked, but can’t always find it.
Yes so happy about this! I always have a handle of wild turkey 101 at my house. I got excited when I first saw blantons at bar and only charging $12 for a pour. I went ahead and got it and after trying I just don't get it. To me it tastes pretty muted and watered down. I'd love to find the straight from the barrel blantons but that's impossible to find.
Had I submitted a bracket, I would now be out! I just hope that people continue to hate on Blanton’s so I can buy more of it! Eagle rare is still really good for the price considering Woodford DO is $55 near me. I wonder what would have happened if the brackets were set up differently (based on price range, etc.)? 🤷♂️
I would take a Blantons all day long for $60. But nothing more. There are so many other good Bourbons in the $50-$60 price range that blow Blantons away.
Wow, guess I'll stop searching for Blanton's and Eagle Rare and just buy what's on the shelf, lol. WRDO is easy to find around here, as is WT101 of course.
I think Blanton’s is good for people that like a very good tasting and easy to drink bourbon. I recently got my first bottle and I can honestly say that it didn’t disappoint me, but it didn’t blow my mind. Wild Turkey 101 on the other hand, is a fantastic bourbon for the price. I think if they were priced the same and were equally easy to find, I’d still pick the Wild Turkey. But, I still think Blanton’s is a fine whiskey at retail price.
What a terrific video. The blind comparison is the only way to compare. Now, everyone's palette is different, but this sort of justifies the fact that readily available bourbons are equal to if not better than their allocated brethren. I enjoy all 4 of these products but the costs and difficulties in obtaining the Buffalo Trace products(waiting for hours at the local Fine Wine and Good Spirits) may cause some pause in cash flow. Thanks.
$23 WT 101 takes down the revered and overhyped Blantons!! Not really a surprise, but keep that in mind next time you're looking at a horsey grenade that they want you to pay $150 - $200 or more. 2nd bracket today was a truly apples and oranges match up. No bad bourbons here, but a great display of bourbon reality!
I think 101 is more polarizing some people love it but I just can't stomach it. Blantons for me seems to be more safe where it's rarely someone's favorite but rarely bad. Love your video tho, keep up the good work!
You are exactly of my “Bourbon ilk”. 101 is in my decanter and never to be replaced. Likewise Double Oaked is in my top 5. Poor Buffalo Trace took a big L today 😂. Well done. Love your style…and your content.
Just wow.......busted my bracket. I know that my WT 101 daily is underrated and solid but thought Blanton's would come through. I'm still ok as my winner is still alive. But I have to say, I have watched for this video to drop like almost no other YT video. Great concept here. Do I just give up the Blanton's chase now?
Too early to say, but it does appear that the first glass picked up gets a taste advantage. It becomes the winner on close calls? Tough to compare glasses when the tastes are similar. Maybe for the final bracket you should film it twice and switch which is glass A to see if the outcome is impacted
No surprise to me. I have all 4 and will always gravitate towards WT 101 because of flavor over Blantons. Question for all viewers. Put Blantons in a plain bottle without a horsey on the top and how many bottles would be available ? Was torn between the Woodford dbl oak and Eagle rare. Eagle barely for me over Woodford on taste, but the nose on the Woodford is purely fantastic. I’ve poured Woodford and literally enjoyed the nose for 30 minutes before taking a sip.
I forgot to put my proof total at the end of my name. How will you determine the winner? Or how do we prove that we are who are if we win with no total behind our name? Just inquiring. Thank you
Agree with you 101%. Blanton's would be good at 25 bucks. I can get three bottles before buying a bottle of blanton's. Evan Williams BnB, Old Forester 100, wild turkey 101.
@@czrs85 so funny. On my shelf I literally have 1.75L bottles of those exact three. My daily drinkers. I have a few nicer bottles to sip on sometimes but majority of bourbon I drink is those three. I went to a bourbon bar that had about every rare bourbon you could imagine. Had some glorious pours but when I had the Blanton I was like WTF. Why is there so much crazy demand for this. It is a decent bourbon. That is all.
WT 101. Booyaaaaa. Too bad the price in my area has gone up 10 bucks for a handle. Currently at $39.99. Luckily there are other fine tasting 1.75ml bourbons for $30.
I can see how he chose WT over Blanton's in a blind taste. WT is big and tasty with a great spiciness. I LOVE WT. Blanton's is certainly more tame but to me a great balanced bourbon and one of my favorites.
I’m 5-1 and the one I got wrong I was shocked as Kurt goes on and on and on about it on his top 5 bourbons and he says it almost always beats out everything else he puts it against, yet it lost in the first round. But my winner is still alive. This is a lot of fun, thanks for doing this.
@@dillonsturgeon7394 Old Grand Dad 114. That and Wild Turkey 101 Kurt always goes on and on about. Those two should be the finalists according to HIS taste profile. Yet 114 gets eliminated on the first show. Some sort of BS happening there.
Ouch. But I'm not upset at that upset! :) But Trenton, wouldn't it be better to set up the higher proof bourbon before the lower (if there's a difference in the head-to head)? Just to make it as fair as possible? (Hard to taste as much in lower proofers after tasting higher proofers...)
I once bought a Woodford Reserve and had to chase it with coke, I just hated the taste. Eagle Rare on the other hand is one of 4 bourbons on my short list that I always wanna have around. Just shows that taste is subjective 😀
I love how many people get so excited about everything Buffalo Trace, but their products consistently lose in blind taste tastes. The BT hype machine will not die.
WT 101 is my go to for sure. Price, availability, proof, and taste are just unchallenged IMO.
I think it's best to situate the tasting with the lowest proof first. The higher proof tends to attack the palate and reduces the ability to taste lower proof.
I didn't see your comment before I asked the same thing. Good logic I think
He is doing it blind. How is he supposed to know which is the higher proof?
@@Peace7702, it's not about him knowing. It's about giving the lower proof first.

WT 101.
Blantons is fine... Alone.... Just had it once next to a Makers Wood Finish 2021 FAE-02... The Blantons just couldn't stand up against that...
Woodford busted my bracket.
My man!
Back on track..
101 wins and eagle bore loses...great night for me.
Which is
@@dillonsturgeon7394 Old Grand Dad 114. That and Wild Turkey 101 Kurt always goes on and on about. Those two should be the finalists according to HIS taste profile. Yet 114 gets eliminated on the first show. Some sort of BS happening there.
Might as well had my dog pick my bracket. You just let 2 swill bottles beat two consensus favorites.
Y’all need to do a reaction video once all of this is done.
Indeed. I do like ER also. Every bourbon in this tournament was very good!
How many are perfect so far?
If you watch enough of his videos these two matchups were easy to pick.
And I'm doing watching you. Have a good one
Never tried Woodford Double but he just knocked out my personal under $35 bourbon Eagle Rare.
Feel blessed to be able to get it for$35. Can't find it here and I'm 35 minutes from the distillery.
I haven’t had the WT bourbon, but the Rye is very tasty
5 for 6 baby !!!
Whats the title of the background music at 4:19?
6A is my thang
WT 101 seems to be ignored sometimes because it’s so easily available and so inexpensive. That’s fine! More for me!!!!!
completely out of this now, our palates are completely different that is for sure.
Woodford beat out ER for me too
Bracket buster !
what does SLB stand for ?
Ugh I had Blantons for the overall winner:(
Was just basing it on previous videos. Never had it. Still on page 2, though.
I'm still in the game baby
Naw batting 1000% over here
bracket busted!!!
what does SLB stand for?????
I love how many people get so excited about everything Buffalo Trace, but their products consistently lose in blind taste tastes. The BT hype machine will not die.
