Its too noisy and goes against Opsec. A loud solar tracker defeats the purpose of a silent solar generator. In SHTF when the power goes out, the loud mechanical noise would attract desperate, unprepared people. Ex: Texas and Puerto Rico.

That is true but as panels like this one I used here the Ecoflow 400 watt get more energy dense, a tracker with a single panel becomes more attractive. I bought 1,360 watts of generic solar panels for about $1/watt. Hooked up in 2S2P, they provide just under 80 volts and 20 amps. These more than easily provide 800 watts to my Ecoflow Max across the day, even during overcast conditions, not being properly angled and/or slight shade without being moved. Far cheaper than the solar tracker that only holds a 400 watt panel. I could get another 2 panels and it would still be cheaper and more resilient in a 2S3P setup.

$3,400!!!! Is this thing made of solid gold? How the hell could Ecoflow justify that price? I highly highly doubt it would be costing Ecoflow $2k+ for manufacturing cost of this small tracker. The price is absolutely insane. Maybe if it was around $1500 I would consider.

The solar tracker is cool, but I feel like it needs to be able to mount more solar panels in the same general form factor to be worth the cost. If you could deploy 800w worth of highly efficient tracking panels in a mobile situation, in addition to your rooftop solar, that would be worth it given the small footprint. If your system is big enough to handle that much juice I don't think the cost for the tracker would be a major hurdle.

Yes but if they can get this cheap and for many panels on one motor in future it would be worth it. Just like telsa had to break ground and still isn't profiting yet. This kinda tech is always expensive and buggy at first and if works will mass produce and make them cheaper and better. But yes currently it's better buying a second panel instead of the tracker.

This would be best for specific use scenarios, ie science expedition, military, reflecting sun off a mirror to explore a deep cave, or to concentrate solar heat on one spot using multiple trackers. When panels weren't as cheap, these were moar cost effective. There are cheaper permanent trackers available for home builds. There's even a DIY non powered design using hydraulic struts, which aim the panel by using the variable heat of the moving sun to expand and contract the struts. I think I read somewhere It doesn't really work, but his cat liked it. Look it up, maybe he listened to his cat and improved it.

But in an example like at the beginning where a house or trees cast a shadow, the solar tracker doesn’t help at all. It doesn’t have motorized wheels to run away from the shadow, so you still need to set it up in a big open area.
And if that’s the case anyway, then as everyone has mentioned, just get another panel, put them back to back or flat, and it’s probably cheaper and just as effective.
The Delta Max is so damn cool though 😛👌🏼👌🏼

For me, sun trackers are hard to justify from a cost perspective, unless your use case requires maximum solar production per square foot. Otherwise, adding an extra panel gives you that extra output that will last as long as your panels. IMO...most trackers are likely to wear out long before your panels.

I generally really like your videos, but you didn't address some important things; The solar tracker doesn't move the panel to avoid shadows from trees, the problem you explained at the beginning. The solar tracker must be fastened down so a stiff breeze won't send it flying off into Oz, and even if it is fastened down, it's not clear how robust it is. Is it really something that you could permanently use in all weather?
Also, can two Delta Maxes be used to make 220V backup power like the Delta Pro? If so, if you bought two Delta Maxes can they be connected in parallel to increase the 110V run time (I'd like to use them in my RV but take them out to back up my house when the power goes out, the Delta Pro is just too heavy).

    • @SilverCymbal
      @SilverCymbal  3 года назад +7

The tracker alone weighs about 100 pounds but it collapses down for easy moving into lighter pieces so you can fasten it easily using the provided holes at the ends of the legs but if you are using it short term it may not be needed. It is 90% aluminum and extremely well made and is designed for long term operation outside. The Delta max can not provide 220v with 2 units. Only the pro offers parallel operation. Hope this helps.

    I have 2 x 50 Watt monokristallin panels for about 80 € / 80 $ each set. This is scalable. 4 x 2x50W is about 320 € plus cable splitters.
My solar tracker is very easy: it's my wife. She was instructed one time what to do. Cheapest solution ever! Not known under engineers and salesman. They don't want to hear this ...

Great review, and thanks for this (I also watched your review on the Delta Pro itself)! Been looking at the Solar Tracker with the Delta Pro as an off grid power source for my Airstream Caravel 19CB. I’ve seen another video say the battery lasted about 7-8 hours with a 5000 btu window unit. Do you think the Solar Tracker combined with the Pro and an Extra Battery would be able to support longer term boondocking? It’s hot where I’ll be, so the AC will definitely be necessary. The Kickstarter has a package with all 3, plus the smart solar generator, and in addition to the Cost the weight is also a consideration (approx. 400lbs altogether).

You can always add more batteries for more storage, but you have to have the capacity to refill them fairly quickly because sun isn't always available.

@@working2bselfsufficient724 yeah, was thinking the same thing. Figured that was a perfect reason to get the smart generator. Have some other ideas that I’ll share post prototype…

Does the solar tracker have a mute switch. The beeping would get annoying really quickly.

Am not sure if you covered how long it would take to charge one eco flow battery with the tracker and solar panels in your video as is or with 3 stacked

Really good review, but if you'd like to save $550 you can use a cheaper panel with higher wattage and make it compatible for $20. I did a review on it and its saved me a bunch of money.

something in the range of ............. whole lot of extra solarpanels that double your incoming watts instead just 30% extra....

I could not find it either on the kickstarter page. Looks like you have to buy a power station with the solar tracker if you want one.

There's going to be a way of staking it down right? Because a strong wind would probably blow that thing away or tip it over.

If space is available, a well-designed system is far better than an additional solar tracker and MPPT charger, which increases the overall cost and loss that can be invested to buy more panels.

Unless it drives around, how does it avoid the shade? Simply tilting and rotating doesn’t seem it would avoid encroaching shadows.

Tracker is cool as hell but the RRP is crazy exp although i recently looked them up & seen a reduction to $1.7K USD in my country which is better but still too much IMO. Around $1K at the most but you're probably paying a huge premium for its novelty status.

im thinking about a nitinol(memory shape alloy)metal tree like array, that moves like a plant towards the Sun light, using its own power to set its leaves ( panels ) to be more efficient as it tracks the Sun, no moving parts*, no waste of power with cables, electronics, etc... Plus it would be nice to look at, something the size of a small Xmass tree, that you unfold from the size of a big umbrella, telescopic trunks and branches, something that would look like ART, a sculpture, that you could draw 700w (to a batt that could store and output up to 1400 watts).
