Mechanical Engineering Capstone Project - Spring 2024

Mizzou Engineering students think about how they can solve real-world problems before they step outside the classroom and into their careers.
It’s part of the Missouri Method, where students engage in learning by doing. That practice begins with hands-on opportunities in lab courses and undergraduate research and culminates with senior capstone classes. These classes allow students to apply what they have learned as undergraduates to develop solutions to the world’s problems.
One group of mechanical engineering students were motivated by a fatal accident in a high school baseball game to develop a new material with the potential to save lives. All six students in the group are sports fans, so they wanted to pursue a project related to that field. Their initial research showed that despite a wide variety of safety equipment in the market, there was a lack of equipment specifically designed to protect the back of the neck.
