@@83gregorycharlene try to find on youtube bernstein explained the feature of this concerto. Just my observation. The concerto ends with a scale more similar to start of rapsody in blue. Yes the concerto is difficult. On the slowly movement, all notes are important for harmony( differently to classic concerto where you have arpeggi and musical scale ) difficult to get right intonation, dynamics, legato. 2nd part it is more easy for a jazz/latin american clarinetist than classic, but jumps are not easy because you should jump between chalemaux, acute,socracute register fast. Originally concerto was more technical demanding in the fast movement, more in sovraacute register and benny goodman ask to copland to make easier it. There some clarinetist( if i'm not wrong frost for example) that play originally the concerto and it is pretty impossible.
As a flutist that has played the Copeland piece for flute and the orchestral Copeland work, there are DEFINITELY words. You just have to pull them from your soul and heart. ❤❤❤
The soloist gave the best performance of this that I've ever heard. Makela allowed the music to breath while maintaining a crucial vitality with the performance. Excellent!!
Seeing a large group of talented folks playing a common theme is, in these days of hate and dissent, ... inspiring. We need orchestral music now, more than ever.

Congratulations! And Seattle Symphony, what are you waiting for? Right here is your next new conductor, Klaus Mäkelä! Go for it, offer him a contract!
