My husband just bought me the sprayer and a large tent for my birthday last month! I have yet to use it because it's so windy here during this season (and our garage is too full). I can't wait to try it out.
If your sprayer came with a viscosity cup (for thinning paint) be sure to use it per the manufacturer's instructions and ALWAYS - always - always have those cheap paper and mesh funnel style strainers on-hand... Even for fresh paint. They cost next to nothing(if not free) and you can never have paint that is "too consistent. The home sprayers can work great until the smallest inconsistency works it's way through and it can really take the fun out of your project. Good luck... and kudos to your hubby.
Thank you so much for sharing! I've never taken on a project like this and am very intimidated. My kitchen looks VERY much like this one - including the same dishwasher, refrigerator and colors throughout! I think I am going to give it a shot. Thank you for your inspiration and tips!
Wow! Those cabinets came out really nice! I've been wanting to repaint my kitchen cabinets but I have so many other projects going on at the moment that I've been putting it off. I will probably wait until the end of November, when the temperatures are back in the 70s. Our summer months are very hot which makes doing anything outside in the garage miserable! Love the island. It came out gorgeous! You know I love those gray colors. Lol. You did an amazing job 👍👍👍 Hugs from the southeast coast of Florida 🌴😎💙😎🌴
Thank you! Yes, I would wait for the nicer weather too! I love the contrast the island gives, you can never go wrong with the Queenstown Gray! Have a marvelous day!!
What’s the secret for not getting brushstrokes, for a beginner? Besides you of course ;) My cabinets are bad, so I can’t mess them up too terribly, but I’d like to shoot for smooth! Your videos rock! They make me want to try at least! Thank you!
Thanks so much for watching!! I think the secret is a good brush! I almost always use a Purdy XL Cub amzn.to/2K10d5C Also paint in the center of the cabinet first (where the details are) they smooth it out on the flat sections, this will help you catch any drips. You can totally do it!!!
Hi! Thank you for sharing! Ive been reading on GF website that you dont need a top coat for white milk paint as it may cause yellowing. I saw you used top coat on the antique white color you chose. Did you have any issues with yellowing after? thank you!!
I’m actually right in the middle of painting my kitchen cabinets and using general finishes milk paint! What finish top coat did you use? I can’t decide! Love your videos!
So, you sanded with 220 grit first, then used Krud kutter and the second cleaner? I was surprised to see that you can make circular motions with the sand paper!
Yep! You want to scratch it up good so the paint sticks! You would never use circular motions if you were going to stain the cabinets instead of painting.
Did you sand the paint before applying the topcoat? If so which grot did you use. I've painted a bathroom vanity with 1 coat of primer and 2 coats of milk paint.
I would wait until you are ready. It is a lot of work! It makes a huge difference, but you do need to be ready. Maybe just change out your hardware to start. That can make a big difference in itself.
Thank you for you video. I am going to print my dinning chairs from dark brown to white. I saw some people said it will turn yellow. Did yours have this problem? Thank you.
My kitchen cabinets have previously been painted by a past owner. I believe it is a flat paint. Do you have any suggestions on how to prep the surface? Is stripping the paint the only way because it takes so long and I don't think I have it in me to do it.
You shouldn't have to strip the paint if the finish is okay (not too many drips, peeling or chipping paint). Just make sure it's sanded a bit so your new layer of paint will stick! If there are some spots you don't love sand it smooth. I hope that helps!
Question, how do I avoid yellowing of white cabinets? I know using poly isn’t recommended but I also don’t want to not use it. Also, I was planning painting my lower cabinets coastal blue milk paint. Do I need to prime lower cabinets, they are cherry red cabinets.
A lot of extra work for milkpaint. Yes, do ALL that for all other paint. With milkpaint, a good cleaning and then simply add the bonding agent. I've successfully used this method for all my milkpaint jobs, including kitchen cabinets, unless it was raw wood, which doesn't require bonding agent
I am redoing an antique buffet. I got general finish milk paint. It seems so watery & I see brush strokes. Think I just need a few coats ? Or should I jump ship to a different paint ?
Usually a few coats will do it. It is a thinner paint than most chalk paints out there - but I really do think the finish overall is worth the extra coats!
Nice job..I know you are using home paint sprayer, my question is can you reuse the sprayer with different colors and how do you clean the sprayer after using it if you need to reuse it with different colors?
Yes you can! You just rinse the sprayer (and all the pieces) out with warm water, Just never let the paint dry in the sprayer (or the nozzle) - I speak from experience ;)
I'm researching painting my oak cabinets with GF milk paint in alabaster, and everything I've read says not to use a top coat on white or light colors because it will yellow. But I'm worried about not doing a top coat because of durability. In your experience have you had issues with yellowing when painting with light colors and using a top coat?
I used 2 qts (with some left over) of the Boss primer dixiebellepaint.com/b-o-s-s/?aff=177. I used a gallon of the Antique White, but I had a lot left over! I would recommend smaller cans, so whatever is left over stays sealed.
I have! I used in on my bathroom cabinets I painted and my front door. It's very durable. It's thicker than GF Flat out Flat, and perhaps more likely to show brush strokes. I think they are comparable though, so whichever is easier for you to get!
I see on your website where you painted your own cabinets with Behr paint. I am trying to decide if I should do a latex paint like Behr, or try milk paint on my kitchen cabinets. Which do you prefer since you have tried both?
I used Behr Alkyd (not latex) - it dries to a harder finish than the latex will. I like either option, but Behr is less expensive and easier to find. Both have held up great, with natural touch ups needed ever couple of years. Either is a good option, probably depends on your budget and availability!
@@RootsWingsHome I was looking at Behr too. I seen they have an enamel paint. I was going to use GF but I'd love to go with a cheaper paint if possible. Do you have to use a top coat with Behr enamel?
This paint is great., we painted our kitchen cabinets white...but DO NOT use their topcoat. We did and it looked great but within 6 months they begin to yellow. We are now in the process of sanding and repainting, this time minus the topcoat. It is a water based topcoat and it shouldn't have yellowed, but it did. I should have read all the comments before we started because there were several in there that said their cabinets had yellowed also.
It's not the topcoat! It's the wood underneath the paint. As the water based products are applied (especially topcoat) it brings up the tannins from the wood and stains through the paint. Use a stain blocking primer under any light color - that's the best bet to prevent discoloring!
Awesome job!!! Thank you for sharing your techniques!
Thank you for watching!!
I love the cabinet. Thank you for the how too. I love your T-shirt one of my favorite songs.

Yes, it made such a difference in her kitchen!
So beautiul! She has a whole new kitchen now! Great job!

I’m actually right in the middle of painting my kitchen cabinets and using general finishes milk paint! What finish top coat did you use? I can’t decide! Love your videos!
How fun, great timing! What color are you painting them? I used High Performance Topcoat in flat finish. It was just enough shine I thought.
Going out in a limb and doing Persian blue! Any tips for applying the top coat? Little nervous- I’ve never done one before.
@@RootsWingsHome did the topcoat yellow the white cabinets? General Finish doesn't recommend putting a topcoat on white?

Looks amazing! Great job!
Do you use other chalk paint for cabinets?
Did you not use the chalk paint (like in the bathroom) BC you were painting white?
I'm so torn about doing this in my kitchen. It looks great but not sure I'm ready for such a big project.

What color did you say you painted her island. I would like to paint my new unfinished cabinets that color.
I forgot to add that to the supply list 😜 the island is Queenstown Gray. It's a beautiful dark charcoal gray!
Looks great and the video is very helpful. Do you recommend sanding between coats of paint?
great video

would you recommend the top coat? Has the kitchen experienced any yellowing? I have heard mixed reviews on using the GF top coat on white paint.
How much paint did you need for this project? I’m looking to do my kitchen and wanting to order soon
Awesome video! Thanks for the tips!
Hmmm.... I thought the point of using GFMP was that you didn’t have to prime or use top coat. I wonder if your topcoat yellowed the white over time.
Not for the whites! This one has not yellowed over time! It can (and usually will) without a really good primer though.
The wife and I are going to do this!

Do you recommend filling in wood grain in cabinets before painting?
No, I don't. I've not ever done it. Wood grain through paint doesn't bother me. If it does you, there are products that will work for a smooth finish!
What is your opinion of the durability of the GF milk paint? I want to paint my bathroom cabinets
I think it's really durable. It's even rated as an indoor/outdoor paint. I used it on my kid's bathroom vanity too!
@@RootsWingsHome I worry about it chipping off

Will the top coat yellow over the white paint?
Not if you prime with stain blocking primer first! That's why the prep and primer is SO IMPORTANT!

Awe, thanks so much! Good luck on your cabinet project, I think you will completely love the results!!

ok but you need to be crazy to destroy this beautiful wood with paint. Her name must be Annie.
Ewww honey oak color is hideous 🤮
I have ugly cabinets like these and getting ready to paint them
With all due respect, this is cringe to watch as someone that's done this for 17 years.
Marking the drawers on the surface to be painted rather than just putting the tape on the bottom of the drawer box? Stopped watching at that point.
