Yeah people really dislike those spikey seed balls in the suburbs. Sweetgum is very fun to carve and not so fun to split but i've become very fond of it. The trees do tend to drop limbs though. The redgum heartwood is beautiful when you get a lot of it. Excited to see the second part of the shave horse series.
Can’t wait for the next one ! I also like the tapered bung auger (I did laugh). I have not come across one that I recall but I will have to keep a look out. We don’t have sweet gum here but I have come across it and the fun spiky balls in my travels. I think it might grow here if planted.
I get what you said about Sweet Gum. I live in SE TN and we have one as our big shade tree in the back. My daughter and I took down a smaller one with a Hultafors Yankee 70. I'm going to make her some spoons for her apt. I liked the old tenon cutter thing, I've never seen one. I'll follow this series, its enjoyable.
They can be really cool trees. Apparently the sap and resin was actually used to make chewing gum. What a great experience to have with your kids! Sweet gum, carbs, really nice, I think I’m going to try to carve a few pieces of it too
The guy that makes Reed hand planes has a kit you can buy to make your own wooden rule. It comes with some brass to use for end caps and a few other things. It is a good kit to work from on building your own story stick/rule.
