"At the opening in 1892 six bachelor brothers, Joseph, Trigg, Newt, Warner, John, and Richard Jett homesteaded adjacent land parcels around the Barrel Springs, about two miles from the present town. Named for them, the present community of Jet (spelled with one t)"
My Grandfather used to drive a mule team and wagon down from SW Kansas to the salt flats in the early 1900's ; load salt for the cattle and camp out in the area till loaded, Never seen them my self but interesting to see where he was many years ago. Thanks!😊
I learned to water ski in the middle of that lake, about 3 foot deep!!!! That is a pumping jack, not a rig!!! My grandfather would leave western Kansas in the early 1900, the trip was about 2 weeks to get the salt the family needed for the year!!!
The Jett brothers constructed buildings on Dick Jett's land and opened a store. Jet received a postal designation in June 1894 with Warner Jett as postmaster. A nearby sod house soon served as a school for farmers' children. The town of Jet was incorporated in 1900 from part of Saline Township
If they were testing and training chemical agents there it’s likely they had a decent sized military base, also probably dropped other munitions during WW2 since there were bomber training bases close to it.
Spent much of my childhood summertime in Verden OK visiting my paternal grandparents. It looks much like this town. Verden was about 500 population at the time. Main street was T intersection to the main highway 9. At the other end of main was an old adobe jailhouse. It's still there.
Cool video. I was raised in Oklahoma and have been back in the state since 2012. I had never heard of this town. Of course Im in a town most have never heard of too. lol
Oklahoma has many other wonders like the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife reserve, Route 66, the Talimena National Scenic Byway in the mountains near Talihania in eastern Oklahoma, Lake Eufaula, and etc. Didn't know about the salt flats at Jet. Thanks.
Tall Grass Prairie, National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, Gilcrease Museum, Philbrook Art Museum, Beaver’s Bend State Park, Museum of Osteology …
Hello sightseeing Sally and Meandering Marty. It was great to see you made it to my state of residence. I had heard of Jet, but never had been there. If only in video, atleast now I can say I have seen it. Seems to be quite a quaint little town. If only you had made it more northeast over to my neck of the woods, you could have seen a town of just over 8,000 people called Cushing which some might consider to be a man made wonder of Oklahoma. It is the pipeline crossroads of the world and has somewhere around 300 oil tanks operated by most of the major oil producers. The tanks themselves are quite a site, but being up on a hill like on South Kings Highway gives you a view of all at once. Who knows, maybe you will come this way sometime in the future. Will be looking forward to the next amazing adventure. Until then take care, stay safe and God bless. Steve in Oklahoma
The plow in front of the town sign had a sod turning mouldboard. The long and slow turn of the mouldboard made it easier to roll sod to open ground for planting.
We live North of Jet in South Central Kansas. We have been to Jet and the lake a lot over the years. Too bad you didn't visit the Devine Artesian Well on Okla. Hwy 11 about straight North of the lake. Pretty interesting sight.
Hi, this is Jack Smith from season 2 of Tiger King. If you're anywhere near the Pawhuska area, I can show you around, and get you on the Osage Reservation (Where I grew up) and give you some history on the town. Lemme know
My now dead grandma’s parents settled the oaklahoma territory. They found oil on the property. Got residues till the 1990’s then sold it. Didn’t get rich off it! Couple hundred a month
The Salton Sea does also support a wide range of wildlife still yet. The Sea's salinity has increased over the years but remains a major stopping point for migrating fowl.
I think they made some kind of travel bags at that manufacturing place. Jet is in my "Neck of the Woods", I've been through there thousands of times. Many, maybe most of the small towns were water stops from the old steam engine days.
You had some nice highway scenery there at the last of the video before you stopped it, was that in the area ?, I went through jet several times starting in 1984, there was a cafe there called "Cow Patty's", I also found the town of Nash to be an interesting town, the film "Dillinger" from 1973 had scenes shot there, only last time I went through there the main street buildings were torn down, looks horrible now, there are some other natural wonders in that part of the state like "little Sahara State Park" with giant sand dunes, "Alabaster Caverns State Park", "Boiling Springs State Park", "Glass Mountains" (mesas) "Roman Nose State Park" with it's wooded lake and huge aquifer out on the plains, "Beaver Dunes Park" in the panhandle and way out west at the end of the panhandle is "Black Mesa", all worth a visit.
Okemah, OK - Home of Woody Guthrie, super small town, lovely folks, we have good food. IXL, OK - just shy of Okemah, tiny town with minimal government, just a cute place to go visit. Boley, OK - one of the last few black towns in OK, has a lovely prison.
"Jet" is another name for lignite (a term mostly used in the UK), with lignite being the lowest form of coal formed naturally by compressing wood fibers. Some can be polished and used as a gemstone in jewelry. The expression "jet black" comes from this usage. I guessed this--or a family name--might be the origin of the town name given the year of its founding.
The sign did not say that those left over vials of what ever could be fatal. It said could be dangerous as lots of things could be dangerous but not necessarily fatal. You’ve obviously never lived in an oil producing region. That was an oil pumping unit lifting some of the life blood of the area out of the ground. The animals both domestic and wild are used to those sounds and pay no attention. If you’re a rancher, farmer or land owner trying to make a living off the land when crop and livestock prices are in the dump, those sounds are music to your ears.
I wouldn't mind living in a forgotten town and let everyone forget me too. I'm tired of subwoofers waking me up at all hours and idiots treating the residential city street like it's a drag strip.
There is no contradiction in the sign wording. They are saying to report the munitions mainly as those are lethal, the vials could have had some chemical in them to react with the chemical weapon agent. That testing chemical could be toxic, but not lethal.
This salt plain reminds me of the Dead Sea in Israel/Jordan. Some circa 400 million years ago, all the great plain states as we see them today did not exist-but were covered by a great sea. I wonder if these salt beds are the remnants of that big sea that once existed in central North America? A bit of paleontology and historical geology.
It NOT the Great Plains Wildlife Refuge: it is the Great SALT Plains W R. The lake there is a salt lake- not as salty as the ones in Utah and California but attractive to migratory geese. I would think that even not knowing that you could read the highway signage you show.
To the nw of Nash n Jet before it was a state was the Drumm ranch. Huge Colonel Andrew Drumm. Google him. Interesting history to this day in Kansas city.
😂 not Turner falls, not Hocha Town or beavers bend, not all the awesome places to visit in Oklahoma. It's the salt flats, where nobody is there but you😂😂😂😂😂😂 yeah that place is awesome!!!
That place has more than Necedah, Wisconsin. Marty talked about the glass tubes, a friend was forced to get the Covid-19 shots had a stroke afterwards. Maybe that is why you and Marty have heart issues.

Hello Sally and Marty from NW Wisconsin.....thanks for the tour of Jet and the Great Salt Plains! Be safe out there!

Even if your winging it, you still do an awesome job every time, plus your humor, both you and Marty are adorable, keep on keeping on Sally.
You just made my night, thank you!!
Another truly amazing video! Thank you both for sharing, and as a side note, there is nothing more amazing than Sightseeing Sally and Marty!

Sounds like a missed opportunity to be added to our list of places to visit next time. Thanks Steve, stay well!
My relatives lived in Jet for at least the last 75 years. In the 70’s it was booming with oil workers.
The plow in front of the town sign had a sod turning mouldboard. The long and slow turn of the mouldboard made it easier to roll sod to open ground for planting.

Hi Sally and Marty, another great video as always, all the best from Australia.
Been in Oklahoma since 1961
never been to Great Salt Plains
Never been to Little Sahara
actually haven't been far from home
