    Prairie dogs are down to 1% of their historic populations. Their burrowing increases transpiration/rain, cools the ground, & acts as a fire break. Beavers also create fire breaks in riparian areas. Both have been decimated by ranching & other agriculture. Managed grazing can make cattle a keystone part of this important balance of grasslands biotic community, thus filling the niche that bison used to... or just bring back bison. Fire is a part of the cycle of grasslands, but the severity that we are seeing is far greater than what would be with a balanced system.

      Their burrows can break the legs of cattle and horses. Beavers need a constant source of trees for their lodges and for food. Not that many desirable trees out in that area. Beavers don't eat mesquite, huisache, and cedar. And they don't use the entire tree they cut down. Just use the side branches of the larger trees. I lost several prime 5-6" oak trees at my pond and 3 large sweet gums. The beaver tried one, but it got hung up in a nearby pine tree, so he cut the next, and the next. Every young willow tree I planted was cut down. They even started in on my large pines trees along the bank of my pond. They only thing they wouldn't touch were the Chinese Tallow trees.

    • @eqmuse
      @eqmuse 7 месяцев назад +1

      @lynnbetts4332
      1. PRAIRIE DOGS
      A study in the 80's by Gerardo Ceballos, et. al. radio collared free range cattle near a prairie dog colony. They chose to graze in the prairie dog towns 85% of the time & they didn't break their legs. The 2 species together made for some very healthy grasslands, whereas the areas without the prairie dogs were desert. They are now grazing bison in the study area, & they don't break their legs either.
      2. BEAVERS
      Beavers only in the riparian areas. To keep their populations down, native apex predators have historically filled that niche. Beavers are a challenge due to property rights, water rughts, & irrigation. As an angler, I'd love to see beaver & predator populations restored at least somewhat. One way to save specific trees is to cage their trunks with strong & tall fencing. Chicken wire is too flimsy.
      There were active beaver wetlands in the middle of the Dixie fire in 2021. Many native animals, including the newly arrived Lassen wolf pack, took shelter around the beavers & survived a massive fire.
      3. CLOSING THOUGHTS
      Humans, their livestock, & pets make up 97% of land mammalian biomass on the planet. Only 3% of intact ecosystems remain on our planet. Temperate Grasslands (includes the N American Great Plains) are considered the most endangered ecosystems on the planet. Migrating Bison would be best for restoration along with the rest of their native biotic community members, but if they are not currently available, properly managed grazing of non-native ungulates is restorative. Plant agriculture is worse for grasslands than well-managed ungulates. I tend to speak through an ecosystems biology & native biotic communities lens due to my wilderness upbringing & restorative agriculture studies & practice.

      Happens every year in the area. This isn't new. You can basically mark on a calendar when the wildfires will start in the panhandle. If you don't have a dozen wildfires before February is finished, then something is out of the ordinary. Whole lot of dry grass and wind that never stops blowing. FIres start very easily and have no trouble spreading. Common culprits are cigarette butts, sparks from vehicles or trains, or even just the sun reflecting off something like a piece of metal.

      Completely normal for the area. This time of year is wildfire season. Happens every year. Basically nothing but very dry grass, wind that never stops, and things like cigarette butts, sparks from vehicles and trains, or even the sun simply reflecting off something like a piece of metal. Very easy to start a small fire with as dry as the grass is this time of year and the wind takes care of quickly spreading it.

    • @RealzFoSho
      @RealzFoSho 7 месяцев назад +1

      The Texas Panhandle produces a large amount of the beef eaten in the US, around 30% I believe, but as big as this fire is it is nowhere near being large enough to threaten the beef supply in the area. The Texas Panhandle is huge, larger than the entire state of West Virginia. The beef production is spread out quite a bit. The most concentrated area would be the big feedlots around Amarillo, but even those are really spread out. The area dealing with the fires right now is mainly just ranches where the cattle are easy to move and, even if they are lost to the fire, represent very little of the overall food production. The fires might be threatening cattle into the hundreds or thousands, but that is nothing compared to the total production in the panhandle. Just the feedlots in the greater Amarillo area represent over a million cattle.
