Another good one... Please bear with me as I mention things you already know. DE is fine but is absolutely useless if it gets wet or damp, meaning sometimes as soon as it hits the soil. For the chick's, DE in a dustbath where no moisture can get at the bath is awesome. I know you know this, sorry. For your aphids and ant problems, use your garden to repel them. Use plants that they HATE. DE will just clump up and lose any effectiveness unless your bed is completely dry....and what grows in completely dry garden beds? lol. The hoop is a great idea. And remember, the first season is all about making mistakes. But the more successful it is, the more interesting it will be for your sisters and for yourself, obviously. What some people do is plant a sacrificial plant. A plant the pests absolutely adore and will attract them away from the food plants you wish to spare. I wish you lots of success
I thought about some of those things. I just don’t have the money to spend on the netting and hoops rn 😭😭 it’s my eventual goal though for sure. Just gotta save up a bit. And I love any advice you have. I will never push any of that away. Please give as much as you can ❤️
@pranarain You may have to change your perspective on that sacrificial plant. 😀 It lives so that your other plants can thrive and not merely live to be eaten to bits. This is autumn where plants die back, and many die for good, such as annuals. Remember the joy of catching their beauty for the last 2 seasons. Well, now we say goodbye, and will have to buy new annuals next year. We don't cry about that. it's life! We need to file those sacrificial plants in the same place in our minds. We do what we must do in order to enjoy the rest. We do not deny ourselves the love of a pet merely because that pet will likey die before we do. They may have only 1/5 our lifespan, yet we adopt, buy, or breed them to share our love with them and theirs with us. A sacrificial plant should be seen as an annual. Nothing more, nothing less. An annual with a purpose.
For aphids: Plants that Naturally Repel Aphids. Planting garlic, chives, leeks, catnip, fennel, dill and cilantro will help repel aphids. Marigolds are also known to drive away a number of unwanted pests. Research good companion plants for these garden additions and place them wisely. for ants: What plants help deter ants? Rosemary. Lavender. Catnip. Peppermint. Mint. Thyme. Tansy. -.As you can see, I rely on Google. Lol

A sacrificial plant is a good idea too. I just worry about the effectiveness. And it hurts my soul seeing a plant get killed 😭

OMG I tried to plant those herbs and they all died 😕 I think I’m going to have to buy them already grown bc I have no luck with starting herb seeds
