    So cool you guys took care of this fine machine. Shame we don't use this technology today more often A small unit could run a house. Neighbors might not be too thrilled. Keep up the good work.!!!!

      +James Stockbauer Thanks, but this is all Gare Bahre's doings. He put in the work, I just shot the video. 😁

    Wonderful engine with great sound!

    It's a marvel the kind of performance and machining you could get in the 19th and 20th centuries; I wonder what a hit & miss designed using today's tricks would look like?

    That's a massive engine! I wonder how big the piston in it is.

      I asked the previous owner of the engine. He said, “13 inch bore 18 inch stroke and 77 or 79 inch tall flywheel. The American Thresherman show In Pinkneyville ILLINOIS owns it now. It will be running at the August show. Gary”

    This is another of those instances where horsepower might not be the best metric to judge the power potential of an engine! It's like when you consider the horsepower of a WW2 era 2.5 ton military cargo truck(aka "deuce and a half), with a 270ci straight 6cyl engine listed as producing between 91-104hp, with drive to all wheels and weighing in at over 8 tons fully loaded. Nowadays, even cheap economy cars produce 91-100hp with their small 4cyls. But I seriously doubt those engines could power a 16,000lb fully loaded military cargo truck with power to all 6 wheels and 10 tires, carrying cargo through the Himalayas on muddy, single lane roads!

      With enough gearing you could move that load with a single cylinder lawnmower engine

    Super engine...
    But where is the cooling tank?

    • @Robgill2008
      @Robgill2008  6 лет назад +7

      Gary Millar there is no cooling tank on this engine. There is no need. No longer than this engine runs, there is no need to reduce the operating temperature. Just like the drag cars on the track, they just fill the water passages with liquid and hope for the best.

    This comes from a Time. When life was much simpler. A Hard Day's Work. Really meant something to somebody . You didn't have to worry if your phone was going to stay charged all day. Wow head we advanced. LOL nothing is made to last today's time. Is anyone in 75 or 100 years going to be coming to see what we had and 2018. Probably not. Haven't we advance to be the Smart Ones. Think about that for me.

      Throw your phone, house and go live in a cave. Things that we have today will out last anything made before. Modern engines are impossible to over heat they can work forever and are incredibly efficient in every way. And EVERYBODY will come to see what we had in 75 , 100 years. We today have incredible technology.

      All the torque and mass weight from the insanely heavy flywheel makes the trailer shake

    I know that theres a conversion calculator for hp and torque but still dont unstand how my yz 250 2 stroke engine can put out 55 hp which is more than this engine'im sure this has way more torque but all in all im guessing they are equall in power??

    • @Robgill2008
      @Robgill2008  5 лет назад +6

      Adam, this comparison is like comparing apples to oranges. I used and online calculator to determine the torque of your 55hp YZ 250 to this 40 HP Bessemer.
      Assuming your engine screams up to 10,000 rpm your torque would be 29ft/lbs.
      I am pretty sure the Bessemer makes its 40hp at roughly 250 rpm. The torque for it would be 840 ft/lbs.
      So it all depends on what you are wanting to do.
      If you want to climb a shear cliff face at 80mph or jump over 15 cars...then your Yamaha is perfect for that job. But if you want to run a complete wood shop or machine shop like what the Bessemer was designed to do... it is perfect for its job.
      Now imagine swapping jobs....unlikely that one could be used to do the others function.
      HP= fun and speed
      Torque= work and money.
      😂

      So to put it simple, im not good at math but say this hit and miss engine is 50 hp and my yz250 engine is 50hp, so given that they produce power at different rpms say you gear the yz250 down in a gearbox to go as slow as the hit n miss engines rpm, so now when your wide open on the 250 and on the other emd of the gearbox it matches the rpm of the hit n miss so does this produce the exact torque now of the hit n miss?

      @@adam_-adam You can do this and it will work, but the engine will explode in a few hours at best.
