Leaving for Greece on Friday. I've had this video in my playlist waiting to watch it before I left. I shared with my mom who is going with me and she has already watched it.
The best way to see a place is like a local. When I travel I like to go down side streets off the main drags -check out non-tourist local areas.

Well done as usual Jon. I went to Greece 4 years ago with my Greek American wife and had a wonderful time time in Athens and the island of Andros where her family lived. It was a great mix of city and island life styles and we even ran into a few long lost relatives. We were scheduled to go back next month a take two week Greek language and culture immersion class on the island of Syros. But last minute health issues forced us to cancel. We’ll try again next year can’t wait to go back to Greece.

I have been to the Central Athens in 1990 and stayed there for business from London
At night I had dinner and ate Mousakka . That was delicious and I still remember. I thank God.

Athens metro is only 18 years old so it's quite modern and cheap as well :)

Refreshing.. down to earth and real rather than pretentious and hype.
What I found surprising is that so many of the folks you encountered not only had a surprisingly fluent skill with English but that any accent was very mild…much less noticeable than, say, an Italian or Turkish accent
Interesting observation
Makes a nice change from seeing the usual top sites and attractions. I didn't realise the temperature got so hot. It's tragic watching the news (6 Aug '21) with homes burning and hundreds being evacuated. Let's hope casualties are low.

Many countries are sending their help. Yes and it was extremely hot, we haven't had such temperatures in many many years.

I can think of a couple of places you could visit especially by night and you will be thrilled by the view. The first is the roof of SNFC foundation where on the North you can see Acropolis on the south have a stunning view of the Faliro bay and to the west see a part of Pireas and especially all of Kastella hill. The second is from the top of Kastella again view of Faliro all the way to the suburb of Glyfada and of course all of Athens since Kastella is one of the tallest hills in the area Athens - Piraeus.

Well mate if you want to experience athens like a local u should visit eksarheia (a neighborhood in the center of athens), here you should have a coffee and then you should take a walk across panepistimiou street, to see the Academy of athens and the Library! Actually most of us locals dont go to tourist spots that often, although we all enjoy the occasional walk to the acropolis haha

As a local totally agree with all places visited. Pls do try Ariston for traditional pies all fresh made. Do also try Kostas for the best souvlaki in Athens. Yes, fredo cappuccino (with cream for those with a sweet tooth) and no is nothing like what u drink in Starbucks... but also do order greek coffee to try it... Finally the cocktail scene is really good in Athens and not as expensive as Paris, London etc. Must try a cocktail with MASTIHA (mastic) or at least a shot of mastiha liqueur

I don't have an answer to that question unfortunately.. I'd monitor the news. It's very sad indeed.
Hi Sara it is a very unfortunate situation and we have many fires in different areas of Greece at the moment but the firefighters are doing everything in their power to contain the spread. Many countries have sent help and we are hoping that this nightmare will be over soon. I don't think that you should cancel your trip, on the contrary, our country needs all the support!

I believe most guides are licensed by the city they are in. Also I think it is great you support Ariel from Urbanist.
Lastly our NYC subway is so screwed up with garbage and dirt. Now the crime is getting worse.So sad -people are slobs.
