    If you want your blades to last longer, do something about the dirt. Dirt will dull a blade fast, and dragging them forces dirt into the bark. I made a log carrier to get them off the ground when I move them and I also power wash them right before I put them on the mill and my blades last 2 to 3 times as long as they used to.

    • @grandpasmountain
      @grandpasmountain  3 года назад +2

      Normally, my life never touch the ground after the tree is felled.
      In the woods, the trail was too narrow to carry the log, no matter how small I cut it.
      I just acquired a bunch of logs that have gravel embedded in the bark.
      I will have to de-bark them before milling.
      I hope to build a log arch into a trailer for picking up logs around town.

    Hello , I’m thinking about buying a sawmill , mainly because I have access to tones of wood and I have the interest and desire , but like having a baby fresh from the hospital wrapped up in a warm blue blanket, a saw mill is no different, a sawmill to me is like bringing that new born baby home , there’s is preparation and a lot of learning in the process sleepless nights demands and expenses just like my new born sawmill , if someone said that when I hit 50 ish I would be wanting to buy a saw mill I would of told them great idea why didn’t I think of that sooner , but in Gods world things don’t happen by mistake , for me owning a sawmill is like you need that time in you’re life when you now gone through all the stupid things and now you are using the big head to think and are being realistic and responsible that’s the time for me to own my own sawmill , thank you kindly all the best Trucker Kelly :)

      Well, Tucker! I sure hope you do get your sawmill and let me know how you like it.
      I have had to learn patience as I wait for my boards to dry --- also, thinking ahead and milling wood for future projects so the wood has time to dry.

    I got a 126 a few years back, cut several thousand bf with it, great little saw. Two years ago I cut 5000bf of 16ft 8'' by 10'', 6''' by 8'', 6'' by 6''.. Some of the 16ft Fir logs were 2ft diameter, had to rough square one side with a powersaw so they would clear the guides! Used my old tractor to get the logs on the bunk I've replaced bearings/drive belt once... the drive belt needed replacing so I did the bearing too even though they were still good. I had the blades sharpened by a professional saw filer but he retired so I tried sharpening them with a Dremel with a small hard stone.. wasn't sure how that would turn out but it worked great! First cut I made I thought the blade wasn't cutting because of very little saw noise and minimal resistance. So far I've got three sharpenings per blade and there's still lots of life left in them. 4 hours steady cutting is about enough otherwise the blade will heat up quickly and get brittle. A rule of thumb; as soon as the blade starts to dive up or down (even 1/4'') change it. The rpm's on those little 10hp engines are low... bout 1800rpm... I think they're factory set for generators, I've upped mine to around 2500rpm, doesn't mean it'll cut faster but it clears itself better = less heat. Proper torque is important, I set mine at 35flbs, works great. The only thing I wish my little saw had is an adjustable saw guide, but to compensate for that I put a long block between the log and the stops. There're bigger, faster saws out there but for the money you won't go wrong with the 126. I'm crowding 75 and look forward to sawing lumber every chance I get. :)

    • @grandpasmountain
      @grandpasmountain  3 года назад

      Great testimonial!!
      I tried the Dremel tool sharpening....I've sharpened stuff before, but I don't think I did a super job. I've been using 30ft lbs on the tensioner.....although there's a big sticker that says "25 ft lbs" on the saw.
      Thanks for writing!

    Robb again,
    Julia and I enjoyed your recent video of the house update. And, the information on the sawmill it looks like a dandy setup. I was thinking about a smaller bandsaw mill for myself to cut logs no longer than 48 inches or so. And a small container or even a greenhouse type setup will dry that lumber in half the time. I remember trying to stick dry some sweet gum and it took nearly a year to get it ready to use. You, inspired me to look at some unconventional types of wood. A fella I know was getting rid of an old crape myrtle bush and I spotted that the thing's base was nearly 16 inches. So, I heard your voice in my head (funny as it sounds) so I asked if I could have what I could use of the old bush, the fella said "well yea". I believe this just might make a few fiddle parts. (After it seasons out) I'll cut some slabs to see how it turns out. I got about a 60 inch long piece by 16 inch section.
    Said, I would email ya when I got my shop up and running but ordering tools can be a pain from China. So, I frequent flea markets around the area, visit one of my toy stores from time to time (Harbor Freight, Lowes, Home Depot & the mom and pop lumber places) to find something I can adapt or use in my shop for tools. I've found some tools that have saved me around $70 so far. Not much, but if it works or makes a job better, I'm all for it. At least it doesn't hit my "Tool Fund" as hard. By the way are you self taught on your fiddle playing? I know some fellas who are and I'm headed that way as well. The house looks great and I'll watch for more up dates. I'd love to see some more fiddle tutorials if possible. I'll send you an email soon.

    I've been in the milling industry most of my life. You can air-dry construction lumber. That why they sticker the packs of lumber. Hardwood must be kiln dried or the boards will stain and lose grade . The exceptions to this rule being cherry, black walnut, and Chestnut . Maple particularly soft Maple stains dramaticly.

I was thinking of buying a container load of them and sell them in Canada.. They are only $800 US each in China plus shipping. Shipping cost was $1600US for 100 sawmill... The problem why I didn't do it was service after the sale and their is lots needed

    Keep a can of spray on urothane for the surface of out dead Wood a very light coat is all it takes, it’ll make the colours pop and hold for a long time. Collecting lots of odd pieces and you will be surprised by how creative you will be. Thanks for the fiddle I love the violin 🎻 😍

    Ok, Stratovarius, so now you need salt water to float your logs in to properly season all of the chemical composition of the wood. The sound quality will spectacular. I really enjoyed your video and your story telling at a very laid back pace. Your daughter is acquiring skills and the work ethics she will need in life. Spending time with Dad will lead her to seek out a mate who will match her own ethics and help her to build her own nest. I like your eye for the artistic abilities of the materials you seek.

    First 2 projects to build after getting a sawmill are a solar kiln and a lumber storage shed. If you are making timber frame building, it is better to doing the joinery on them while the wood is green.

    You were saying that the blade popped off. Funny story got the same mill and it came with a new stile idle wheel band. It's got a v cut in it, not flat. Took me about a year to change it out, wish I did when I put it together. Moral of the story by ten more blades! Good luck to you.

    I bought one of the 1st generation HM126's somewhere around 5 years ago. 1000's of boardfeet cut in that time. Out of dozens of bands, Ive had ONE that wouldnt track correctly. Thats the only problem Ive encountered.

    It is a nice saw!You don't really need storage for oak,and sealing the ends for cracks is good when drying.their blade sharpener might be a good idea also.

    • @grandpasmountain
      @grandpasmountain  3 года назад

      If the blade sharpener was cheaper, I'd do it.
      I use latex house paint to seal the ends and it works great and is super cheap. You can get nearly free paint if you ask for the mess ups at the paint counter.

    Hey! Thanks for the video! Quite informative and helpful. I'm looking at the HM 126 to help me deal with a lot of spruce die off from bark beetle in Nova Scotia, and to have something to make life more complicated (Lol!). There are a lot of the various competition's assorted mills in this area but I haven't found a Woodland Mills example anywhere near here so your input has helped me along a lot. I'm thinking the fourteen horse engine for my purposes but I'm sure the 9.5 would do fine as a friend has a 9 hp honda which is doing the job fine. Great job on the house! Hope you do get to build some musical instruments! I've been working on making a banjo for several years now, but they tell me I need a "round-tuit".

    Hi John! How’s it going?! I was looking at buying a saw mill and your video just popped up and I was like “ I know Jon!” I just bought some land and looking to build a house and was thinking of using one to make the hardwood flooring and possibly some beams. I would probably have a company dry it all. I was wondering what other parts of the house I could use it for. Im gonna look more into the one you have. Those oak boards look beautiful! Great video will see you around!

      Hello!
      Is this Jared?!?
      You can make all you want for a house as long as your town let's you (live free or die....not...)
      My buddy cannot make ANY pieces for his house due to town codes.
      No need to pay to have someone dry the wood. A few months is sufficient.
      I actually cut a tree down, milled it, then built a free standing deck in one day to learn about building green (the settlers did it). Waited a couple weeks and stained it.
      Came out awesome. No issues.
      Everything I dried this summer is nice and stable and as good as anything kiln dried.
