The reason his followers have sunk to cult levels, is because he has made indecency acceptable, he has freed them from the constraints of decency, of morality, of empathy, of being just to everyone. He has allowed them to be their worse, to not just free their bigotry, but be proud of it, to be proud of their worse instincts, and so they love him for it, he is their beacon.

This is such a simplistic take on Trump voters.
There is no evidence that the majority of Trump voters are bigots.
Trump voters vote for Trump for a whole myriad of reasons. Some support him because they want lower taxes. You have hispanics who support in part because they or their parents came to the country legally and they do not appreciate that their are undocumented immigrants who've been able to skip all the paperwork and settle in the US illegally. Others support Trump because they want to reduce inflation.
Finally many vote for Trump because they feel betrayed by the democrats for being partially responsible for de-industrializing the USA and they vote for Trump not because they like him but they vote for him out of protest.

Especially with the amount of annual deaths they have from fentanyl being smuggled into the country. I would also want to escalate drilling for oil to help with living costs. The problem is that nobody is willing or, able to ask the question, “Why is immigration a problem? Who is it a problem for?” Seems to me that people should be able to go where they want. You should be able to enter a country, let them know you’re here, be given a number and join society. If it works for people born in a certain place (children), it should work the same for somebody showing up full grown. It’s not as though that person could get away without paying taxes ( dang near everything you buy has a tax associated). Seems kind of bizarre to think, “I was born here, therefore I belong here. You were born over there, therefore you belong over there”.

I think the problem is with how many move to a country. For instance, there would be a shortage of housing and with the law of supply and demand, that would mean rent prices would go way up.
It is reasonable to set a limit for immigration each year, and asylum seekers should be first in line.
Edit: I would add that wealthy countries would be wise to help poor countries suffering from droughts, etc. due to Climate Change. Most poor people do not want to leave their home countries but face starvation if they stay. It makes sense to help them before they leave their home countries.

A few interesting aspects of certain SE Asian countries. I am Filipino and I have many Vietnamese friends.
Some Vietnamese who like Trump see him as the opposite of the Communist party that won the war.
Many Filipinos, who voted for Duterte, saw Trump as someone like Duterte, someone who was anti-establishment. They also had a bromance as well during their tenures.
I’m not saying this is right nor that it is much different in context from Trump supports in America.
It’s interesting the different angles some people have that have led them to Trump but in context his abstract language and contrarian-like demeanour is the same regardless of where you are from. It’s how they “fill-in-the-blanks” of his ambiguous and abstract language.
To me he is a salesman who is challenging his limits because of a fragile ego. And is a predatory pervert who would date his daughter if he had the chance.

If some support Trump just to troll and antagonise never-Trumpers, then Trump himself will say and do idiotic and malignant things to show just how debased those supporters are. Trump really is an empty shell of a person, desperately trying to convince others that he's a success and that whatever sham front he puts forward has some merit.
