We have found it necessary to use CTCSS tones when out with my Jeep group. You have people using different radios from different manufacturers, of course, with differing build quality. It’s been found with the newer JL and JTs, and all their fancy electronics, that the Jeeps themselves seem to be emitting something that’s causing some radios to break the squelch, and the user is listening to static all of the time. Noticed especially with the Retevis radios. Once a CTCSS tone is added, this stops. The radio sits quietly, until someone actually keys-up and talks.

Where I live in Nova Scotia, Canada tones are used for commerical radio licenses to have many companies with the same frequency for simplex operation. In my city at least 6 different companies have licenses for the same frequency, they all have different tones on them. By design they are just out of range of each other and are not mobile so it works.
Just new to the GMRS party, but I must say, my Baofeng UP=69, with the encryt/privacy feature for channels 23-30 is amazing. Now to decide what channel to do private stuff on.
Pretty simple. Any radio with CTCSS disabled can hear all transmissions regardless of the CTCSS tones used by other radios on the channel. The radio only filters tones other than the one it's set to receive. When CTCSS is off the radio isn't listening for a tone and therefore de-squelches any transmission, tone or no tone. A lot of FRS operators don't even bother with CTCSS settings, so they can hear pretty much everything within range. The rub with CTCSS, mainly in relation to FRS, is that it can create a traffic jam of interference. Operators using different tones can key up over each other not realizing someone else is keying up at the same time using a different tone (or no tone) because they're on the same channel even though they may not hear each other. A "privacy code" is not a unique channel as it is sometimes marketed. Just because you can squelch other operators doesn't mean they aren't there and you can't interfere with each other's traffic.
You're right, Randy. Privacy tones don't actually provide privacy. That's why I've been experimenting with the encryption features on the new Baofang UP-69. It's not part certified but who cares!? I'm not the only one trying it out; I heard the FCC might even legalize encryption on GMRS to make sure HAM operators can't eavesdrop on GMRS anymore!
You haven't been paying attention. The FCC has already approved the new encryption for the newly approved GMRS channels 23 - 30. We're already using this. Try and catch up.
I am new to this Channel, I don’t know if he is having Fun, making Sarcasm or paranoia? I couldn’t tell which one and to be honest I don’t care. But he is informative on his topics, sometimes he’s the only one talking about certain topics for radio-stupid people like me, but I am learning from his videos, and I skip the non so informative parts, so NO COMPLAINTS FROM ME.
Some HTs do have sub-tones for both transmission and reception, but what was said is still true: it's not so much for privacy, but rather a feature to avoid unintentional interference from others who might happen to be on the same frequency you and your peers are, as well as to avoid interfering into their conversation. It's useful when all parties are civil and just want to avoid nuisance. But the subtones, DCS/CTSS, are standardized codes. If malicious third-parties wanted to listen to or interfere with your comm, it would be trivial to do so.
I completely agree, the subject needed to be clarified for some. On the other hand, very surprised by the comments left. They should move on instead of wasting more time writing these kinds of comments if for them you are a waste of time 😂😂😂
Great information! On an unrelated note, have you considered doing a review on the frequency hopping with encryption feature that the new Baofeng UP-69 is introducing?

@@TheNotaRubicon An there I was wondering how soaked your brain was from all that induced research you were doing? Pretty sure you could work harder and get the review of the UP-69 done 😂
Good day to you! I have two questions for you sir: I was wondering what is the difference between the different codes used, if it's relevant. What are the effect of using codes on the Tx and or the Rx? Thanks 👍
I think I got it! You just need the Tx code to unlock repeaters, so for that the Rx wouldn't be neccesary. You would need those in both TX and Rx on simplex. Am I on the right track?
Everyone is yammering on about the UP-69, but the one I'm looking forward to is the BaoFeng UP-YuRS. The idea that is sends digitally encrypted traffic that can only be interpreted by the target radio without a PSK or handshake is wild.
Ok, so I pretty much understand the privacy code thing, except for one thing. If my friend and I are talking on say channel 16, with our "privacy codes" on, and some one nearby, with perhaps a more powerful unit, talks on the same channel, at the same time, will it interfere with our communication, even if we don’t actually hear him?
a "sub channel" is just a CTCSS or DCS tone/code added to a channel. So in addition to the TX code on the repeater, add an RX code and put that same RX code on all your radios - you will then only hear other people that are using that same TX code.
I'm a bit late to the party but if you use the Decryption code feature on the latest firmware release for the BaoFeng UP-69, you can understand what Kenny is saying. Its pretty clear.
All this WAS true until just now. My brand new BAOFENG UP-69 is purpose built for the NEWLY FCC Allocated GMRS channels 23-30 which support radio Encryption at AES-128 and (for a fee to the FCC) AES-256 encryption for privacy... finally without violating laws or common sense. That AES-256-bit fee btw is $35 payable in $70 installments.
So, A and B have a code, that blocks them from hearing others, but others can hear them. If A and B can't hear anyone else, won't they be interrupting everyone else's conversation, since those others cannot be heard by A and B?
Can't wait for Chirp to support my Baofeng UP-69 so I can more easily program encrypted Repeaters on 23-30!. Baofeng software supporting this IP67 beauty is still in beta and only runs on Windows 95/98, WTH? That forces me to type in my lady's AES code: "7625e224dc0f0ec91ad28c1ee67b1eb96d1a5459533c5c950f44aae1e32f2da3" from the keypad. Timeout is 9 seconds,... what an absolute BEAR, ugh! Digging the new dihydroxy monoxide liquid refillable battery, though, but the o-ring on the fill port look cheap and probably needs a spare.
I'm no expert nor am I a Sad Ham and I have a question about "tones." I understand that there is no "security" with tones and anyone on a channel can HEAR the communication between two people using tones, but aren't those just a squelch de-activator? So, if one of them is transmitting and someone else keys his radio at the same time, won't that interfere with his transmission, or is that filtered out somehow? Wouldn't they be ahead to switch to another channel?
Question, if you and your buddy use a different code on a busy channel, the other people on that busy channel still can hear the conversation? Thus interfering with said busy channel and making it more busy for the other people?
467.900 is used by Target in my area. Radio Reference shows they use 205 DPL. Can someone explain to me what that means? I can hear everything they transmit on my UV5R. But for fun, I set DCS to 205 and I can't hear them anymore. But if I remove the DCS tone, I hear them again.
DPL205 (same as DCS205) is the tone they are using so that they only hear other radios transmitting that same tone. If you set DPL205 on your radio and then cant hear them anymore, that means they arent using 205, they are using some other tone and Radio Reference is wrong. With no tone set on your radio you will hear everything they transmit - this is why tones/codes are not "secure" If you want them to hear you when you transmit, you will have to figure out what tone they are actually using - Look up "UV-5R tone scanning" to learn how to figure out what tone they are actually using.
@@TheNotaRubicon thank you sir. You explained that perfectly. As a newbie, I was told radio reference is the Bible. So I thought that 205 DPL had to be right. I actually watched over 50 of your videos even before buying my UV5R. And I watched the CTCSS/DCS scanning video. It was great that you showed I had to set a random value first, then exit out of it and had to go back in for the scan to work. You sir are a great value for us newbies. I appreciate all your videos. PS - I wouldn't transmit on Target's frequency. Just enjoy listening. They were talking about a customer who is abusing the return policy and they wanted the office to write down her name for future reference.
There is a common misunderstanding of tone usage. Two GMRS transmissions on the same frequency with different tones can easily interfere with each other to those listening within the common reception area. Once your squelch is opened by receipt of the proper tone, your receiver will hear everyone in your reception area transmitting on that frequency in your reception zone, no matter what tone they are transmitting with. (In Chicago, where I grew up, we often ended sentences with a preposition!) So in our area when someone is using the Mt. Wilson 600 repeater and another is simutaneously transmitting on the Mt. Disappointment 600 repeater with its different tone, simultaneous transmissions will be received by those listening to 600. Of course, being FM: power, distance and the "Capture effect" comes into play in this situation, too! You and Chris should test this out with your HTs on 700 while your repeater is actively in use, at the same time! :) I will bet dollars to donuts that your repeater overwhelms Chris' transmission (being so close) even he is transmitting on a different tone and you are receiving on that tone, while your repeater is in use. I have heard that this will also be the case with the newly announced Baofeng UP-69!
Love your videos! Question. I’m new to the radio world. I’m trying to connect to two local repeaters on my Midland MXT115. The tones listed for the repeaters are DPL numbers. I don’t see anything about these numbers in the manual. Is this radio not compatible with DPL codes? Thanks!
Dear Randy, We need a new Jailbreak Hack for new Baofeng UP-69. It's not letting me access channels 23 - 30 and the old hack won't work. I need the ultimate and complete Cone-of-Silence privacy of the new encryption available on those channels. Please Help!
So if its a busy channel and you add a privacy code and people can still hear you, couldn’t you be interrupting others on that busy channel? Just asking because I’m brand new to this and still learning.
Question:. Big Jeep gathering - 1000 Jeeps. Ten different trails being run at the same time. All are within range of each other. All on GMRS channel 16. Each trail leader picks a different "privacy" code on channel 16. I am guessing that all the simultaneous traffic on 16 (but on ten unique privacy codes) will not play well together. Could you do a video to discuss this ridiculous and intentionally extreme scenario? Love your sarcasm.
Randy, please ask Zeno, the warrior princess: What the Hello Kitty does all the Baofeng ANI codes, 2 tones & 5 tones do? And how or when would we use them, if ever? 🤔
Can you have 2 different conversations going on , on the same frequency with two different parties if they are using different "privacy tones" ? Thanks
it depends on how close you are, the power of the radios, etc, but everything being equal, two radios transmitting at the same time using different tones will still step on each other/interfere with each other.
could you do a video on "digital" radio and what the police use? i have heard that they use "encrypted" communications that no one can listen on. How can I use that for myself with my friends?
Outside of GMRS. PL tones are used for filtering out intermodulation products ("intermod") in big cities that would otherwise get in to the input of public safety, business, and amateur repeaters and base stations. That's really its best-case use. I strongly discourage PL/DPL/etc. use on trail rides in the middle of nowhere simply because maybe another group on the same channel has an emergency in progress. If I'm with a big group we'll just find an quiet channel instead of Ch. 16.
So basically there can be a situation in which there are several groups of my friends and we are using the same frequency but with subtones we can divide this one frequency and not interrupt each group's talk, do I understand it correctly?
You would not _hear_ each other.. But if you're all close to each other you would still interrupt/cause interference because you'd all still be using the same frequency and only one person can talk at at a time... If you're going to take all the time to setup sub-tones, you might as well just change to a different frequency instead, then have 0 interference from each other.
I think it's important to use tones. I use an angry tone when my friend doesn't bring his own water on a hike, I use a happy tone when my hikes are shaded... 😂
Can someone explain why my new UV-69 only works when I hold it upside down? I knew antennas come with different gender connectors, but from my perspective this must be a female radio.

I’m looking forward to the new Baofeng UP69, it has legit encryption.
Have you seen the UV9R ERA? Is that one legit?
Nicely done. They can also be used to stop random interference opening the squelch.

On an unrelated note, have you considered doing a review on the frequency hopping with encryption feature that the new Baofeng UP-69 is introducing?
nice use of the hidden message i recently bought a pair of uv5rs and i would like to say thank you for the videos you make i have learned a lot from them, when I'm not distracted. By all the shiny useless things of modern society
I got to laugh when the hand wavy thing happens you just look so happy
My new Baofeng UP-69 claims to have something called 'rolling encryption' but I don't trust it. Is this the same as tones?
You know randy, I can't have a conversation in which I say, some people, without stopping and repeating......." some .......people" , complete with quotations. The monster that you've created. LoL.
Thank you very much. I have never had the occasion to use a tone, and did not realize that all receivers were not rejected. Is there a way to configure your receiver to reject information with a tone set?
Howdy, jumping in to say I like that you switched to an RE20 mic from your condenser, hope you do too.
I like it MUCH more.
What's the difference between Tone and TSQL (tone squelch)? Some repeaters show TSQL.
Can you do a video on the new Baofeng UP-69 that supports the new encryption/privacy option that the FCC just approved for GMRS channels 23-30?
I will be doing that video soon! Encryption on GMRS will be awesome!
@@TheNotaRubicon Am I missing something, I cannot see a single reference to a UP-69 on the internetz, not one. Does it have a another name?
@@TheNotaRubicon An there I was wondering how soaked your brain was from all that induced research you were doing? Pretty sure you could work harder and get the review of the UP-69 done 😂
Great information Randy. Thank you.
Best channel on the interWebs
Good day to you! I have two questions for you sir:
I was wondering what is the difference between the different codes used, if it's relevant.
Love the subliminal stuff…
My new Baofeng UP-69 supports encryption. 👍
Yes
Thank you for this video!
Nice Christmas tree!
hello . Thanks for your very useful videos. how can i add a sub channel in gmrs repeaters. So my group just listen each other?
a "sub channel" is just a CTCSS or DCS tone/code added to a channel. So in addition to the TX code on the repeater, add an RX code and put that same RX code on all your radios - you will then only hear other people that are using that same TX code.
i have a baofeng UP-69 which enables secure comms but only on channel 23
I'm a bit late to the party but if you use the Decryption code feature on the latest firmware release for the BaoFeng UP-69, you can understand what Kenny is saying. Its pretty clear.
Happy Birthday (in heaven) Buck Henry
The Baofang YP-69 encryption for channels 23-30 will fix all this. Or will it?
Love your channel and brand new to gmrs. If you factory reset you kg-uv9g can you get your SHTF stuff back. Feeling bummed
See this page at BetterSafeRadio: bettersaferadio.com/custom-radio-programming-services/
You may have to contact them and let them know what happened.
Yes, and yes.
You’re awesome brother! Love your channel
With no tone set on your radio you will hear everything they transmit - this is why tones/codes are not "secure"
If you want them to hear you when you transmit, you will have to figure out what tone they are actually using - Look up "UV-5R tone scanning" to learn how to figure out what tone they are actually using.
(In Chicago, where I grew up, we often ended sentences with a preposition!)
So in our area when someone is using the Mt.
I will bet dollars to donuts that your repeater overwhelms Chris' transmission (being so close) even he is transmitting on a different tone and you are receiving on that tone, while your repeater is in use.
Thanks!
DPL = DCS
@@TheNotaRubicon Got it now! Thanks for the reply!
Dear Randy, We need a new Jailbreak Hack for new Baofeng UP-69. It's not letting me access channels 23 - 30 and the old hack won't work. I need the ultimate and complete Cone-of-Silence privacy of the new encryption available on those channels. Please Help!
try the rolling encryption.
Great information
Thank you
So if its a busy channel and you add a privacy code and people can still hear you, couldn’t you be interrupting others on that busy channel? Just asking because I’m brand new to this and still learning.
Yeeup!
Thank You, My "Favorite" Sensei... "Ohm"...
Tone taken!
🤔
I think Xenu know more about Zetron toneout codes. Station 51, 10-4, KMG-365.
can a low tone 1 hear a high tone 2 or the high tone 2 hear the low tone 1?
Can you have 2 different conversations going on , on the same frequency with two different parties if they are using different "privacy tones" ? Thanks
it depends on how close you are, the power of the radios, etc, but everything being equal, two radios transmitting at the same time using different tones will still step on each other/interfere with each other.
@@TheNotaRubicon Makes sense, Thanks
could you do a video on "digital" radio and what the police use? i have heard that they use "encrypted" communications that no one can listen on. How can I use that for myself with my friends?
They do, and you can't!
Super-easy... you and your friends just have to all become police, fire, or EMS personnel for a jurisdiction that has implemented encrypted radio ops.
Just because you can't hear them, does not mean they can't hear you!
Hey Bro! Maybe give us the new skinny on the Boa-Chicka-Bao-Funk's new UP-69 model with that new uber privacy goodness! Thanks bro!
Can someone explain why my new UV-69 only works when I hold it upside down? I knew antennas come with different gender connectors, but from my perspective this must be a female radio.
It should be noted that even Wikipedia gets this right. If _they_ are correct, the "Some People" need to get their act together.
Yes!
Man, you were all set up for the coffee slurp - which we haven't enjoyed in a while, actually - and just left us hangin'. The folks leaving comments below don't get it. The Baoefeng UP-69 is cheap Chinese junk.
In fairness, you have to listen 0.3% more closely when someone else is using a "privacy tone" ✌️😺👍
Hello Sr. First of all good job with your videos. I been searching in yours videos about the function “scrambler” and nothing. I suggest a video about it, if you don’t have already. Thanks for everything that you teach 👍.
