The Jacobite daily steam service on the Fort William to Mallaig line in late May 2024 - with former LMS Black Five 45407 providing the motive power, with assistance from owner-driver and saviour of steam, Mr Ian Riley.
Captured on some of the fiercer gradients on the West Highland extension - around Beasdale, Kinloid, Glenfinnan and Morar.
Whatever the 'political' arguments and discussions around those Central Door issues - this was so special to see and hear again the regular daily steam in the Highlands, albeit currently with just 50% of the trains and a different feel to the formation. This wonderful Black Five (despite an apparent recent steam leak) seemed to coped even better than usual with the seven carriages - maybe the reduced number of passengers or the weight of the carriages makes a noticeable difference? The midges were surprisingly irritating for early June and some gusty winds affected where to locate the external microphone. Those with extra perceptive ears might have recognised a young family of Greater Spotted Woodpeckers demanding attention from a parent - from within a tiny hole in the tree trunk near to the tunnel mouth.

Thank you Andy. The West Highland Extension is THE very best place to appreciate main line steam! Away from the crowds, and on the climb to Beasdale summit is a location that will transport you back to the sixties steam you remember!

Just like i remember it nearly 40 years ago. I have been back 25 year ago but hope to get there again in my lifetime.
