  • The Declaration of Independence says, ''all men are created equal.'' Friedman explains that this did not mean all persons should or will have equal talents or income. Equal opportunity to better one’s self, and the right to personally benefit from the gains realized, are consistent with freedom. Equality of results requires force. Taking from some to give to others destroys freedom and removes the incentive for creating new wealth. Friedman visits India, U.S. and Britain. Discussion Participants: Robert McKenzie, Moderator; Milton Friedman; Frances Fox Piven, British Ambassador to the United States, 1977-1979; Thomas Sowell, Professor of Economics, UCLA.

    Hello. I'm from Chile and 29 years old. I really appreciate the work of the "chicago boys" and the implementation of Friedman's ideas. We are one of the richest countries in the region thanks to liberal ideas implemented by Pinochet in the 80s, but especially deepen by the central-left parties in the 90s and the first half of the 2000's. So, as a conclusion, the free enterprise system gave us economic freedom, which lead to political freedom and now we have both. Sadly, I never read about Friedman in the school, and now a generation of young people wants to return to the failed central planned economy system. We are maybe seen in the last decade of economic and personal freedom growth in our country... hope to be wrong. Thanks to upload this video!

    "A society that puts equality before freedom will get neither.
    A society that puts freedom before equality will get a high degree of both".
    Words of wisdom from Professor Milton Friedman.

    The case of Chile is another example of Friedman's wisdom. He was absolutely right.

    Time proof Milton was right. Equality of identity is all that matters nowadays and it all started back then and the other people couldn't see it. Wise man.

      Excellent point. I suppose they could "give" us equality, but it would probably just be an existence where everyone was equally miserable.

    • @libertyislife8143

      @@jdorritie I like your point and I think what Friedman is saying throughout the entire series is that, states or countries that embarked on "equality" of outcome through government intervention ended up with a large number of people "equally" miserable.

    Thomas Sowell is the greatest black thinker ever 🐐🙌🏾

    • @RogerFusselman
      @RogerFusselman 4 года назад +15

      Well, that statement presupposes a long knowledge of what "black thinkers" have existed. Certainly there have been black thinkers since the dawn of time, and that it's quite possible somebody had greater achievement relative to his time compared to Dr. Sowell. That said, Thomas Sowell is as amazing an intellect out there.

      He's done plenty of commentary on the arrogance of the intellectual, namely far-left liberal whites who think the poor people of color need a voice and they're that voice. I already know this is the exactly the reason he popped off. She was being presumptuous in thinking that she had any inkling of what black people want or need.

    Many of the panelists speak as though everyone was stuck. But people move among income groups over a lifetime. I have. And individual liberty makes that possible. If my neighbor needs help I'll pitch in myself, and I have, without compulsion or the assistance of politicians and bureaucrats.

    No honored guest asked Milton how Milton would remove “barrier to freedom” posed by free enterprise. If thus asked, Milton would say, I guess, competition, citing his great example of the 19th century United States. From a God’s view, Milton would be right, for even the Vanderbuilts and Morgans and Carnegies could lose to other more “talented” competitors. The scenario, however, wouldn’t be too nice to generations of other people, no matter how talented they’d be. These other people, with their goal in this world, in their own generation, couldn’t therefore possibly agree with Milton. That’s politics, or reality.

    I think the lady is more comfortable "fighting the power" than providing actual solutions to the problems she identifies. However, Sowell needed more emotional control in arguing here, especially considering that he had his facts straight and she didn't.

    Peter Jay apparently does not understand the rationale of having two different ways of looking at government in the national accounts: in terms of what it consumes (a lot) and what it produces in GDP (very little, compared with what it consumes). It seems to me that Milton Friedman is being exceptionally kind in avoiding the undiplomatic savagery of revealing to Mr Jay exactly what a fundamental misunderstanding he has settled upon in macroeconomic statistics.

    I see where this idea that if in an argument, you are very loud and outraged you must be right, came from. With exception of Milton and Sowell of course. Anyway, my assumption is none of these outraged academicians have ever started or run a small business. Then you'll really understand the Milton-Sowell arguments.
