    I had the same problem on a similar LG Monitor but I didn't have a replacement cap around. Since it was a 12V transformer I simply attached a standard 4 Pin Molex and hooked it directly to the computers PSU. Fixed.

      That's cool! But this monitor is actually 19v so that wouldn't work in this case.

    I just had the same problem with my 2nd LG monitor and was about to fix the PSU after watching your video. However, I would have to find the capacitor as I don't have that size and value in my junk box... but I found a replacement PSU on Amazon for ~$20. So, I went the lazy way and bought a replacement PSU. It arrived the next day and my monitor is up and running. Yes, the replacement is another low-price device from you know where, but it "says" that it's UL, CE, etc. certified. In any event, thanks for the video as it probably saved me from trashing the monitor.

    I was ready to open up the monitor until I stumbled on your channel!

    Recently fixed my old Asus LCD monitor (from 2007 I think) which had a similar problem. 2 bulging caps in the power supply, replaced them and it worked fine. Guess manufacturers haven't improved their practices the last 10 years.

    Save $30 not buying a new power supply 😉 👍
    I am also a repair tech with the exact same 27" LG monitor and issue! The power brick was definitely #1 suspect. And that's exactly what I did, but I happened to have a 680uf 25v cap laying around. I also took the monitor apart. Not too hard once you figure it out. After you take the stand off. Entire back is snapped on and only one screw where all the connections are. You have to start at the bottom right corner where there's a visible slit and then work your way around the entire back one snap at a time. Hopefully that extra bit of info will be helpful to someone if they are trying to access the monitor board etc. There's a single small postcard size board with all electrolytics on it surface mount. All looked good still. Only the power supply was bad like you showed. It was fun watching this video after the repair and seeing the exact same thing LOL thanks 👍 I also have a couple Panasonic plasmas and have fixed many others! I have a bunch of good new (batch tested) DG301's if you ever need any... 😉

    My 19inch LG is doing the same thing, built in PS though, I bought this thing back in the early 2000's and it is just now dead, time to crack it open and recap I am sure, it is my surv monitor. Great vid, inspires me to work on my own :)

      I don't do Web authoring. Dreamweaver is part of cs6 which I bought several years ago for a redecules amount of money. Something like 1500.00. I use premiere and I am pissed at the new "rental" policy for new versions. My version will not run on win10 so I am stuck with win 7 forever. If my computer breaks I will have to install an old version of with 7 on new machine. I won't be upgrading my editing machine any time soon. I don't do anything on this machine but edit and upload. If a time comes that I can't upload with existing browsers I will export to external drive and upload from a newer machine but as far as my edit suite goes it will remain win7 forever. Or I could dump premiere and move to something else but there is the learning curve I would rather not go through. I learned on premiere 4.0 and that is all I have used. I have tried other "consumer" versions with a gillion effects and such and I actually used pinnacle 14 to make my opening logo but I perfer the speed and simplicity of premiere 6 for what I do. I know how to do everything I need to without having to look something up.

      @@12voltvids Try Davinci Resolve; yes there's always a learning curve but the editing's pretty straightforward. I chose to use Resolve because of its grading capabilities, which I'm still very much a novice at (Resolve is THE standard for colour grading). Editing's easy on Resolve and if you understand editing on Premier, Resolve will not be that much of a steep or long gradient. The big bonus for Resolve is (1) it's free (2) you get ~80-90% of what you get on the paid-for version of Resolve and (3) you can stick the middle finger up at Adobe for being so effing greedy.

    Well that came back to perfect operation, well worth it :-D.
    I laughed when you used a cable tie on the psu, i've been doing the same thing on my own supplys for a long time.
    i also drill 1/8 inch holes in the case to get some convection air flow, stopping the ovan effect.
    I don't like wasting a psu for the sake of a capacitor, i think you are similar.

  • @Vulcano7965
    @Vulcano7965 3 года назад

    The exact same capacitor was the issue in my LG psu as well.
    aged psu, slightly bulged cap. volt drop off from 19V to 10-13 during load. Now with the replacement cap only to ~18.5V.
    Thank you for this video, I would have gutted the entire monitor otherwise to find the issue.

    I remember when back in early of 2016, I have the 2006 Trutech (Cyberhome) TT-320 DVD player that I got it from the pawn shop where they don't want them anymore because, someone wrote it on the top of the DVD player with the black marker saying "no good, returns 7/26/12." later on, somewhere around in November I guest, I opened up the case, and found out, the S.Y. 1000µF 10V cap is bulging, and right after I change to Samxon 1000µF 10V cap, and all behold, it works! DVD player for free (but no remote to the DVD player) I can't complain about it. =)

    Nice fix, replace a capacitor, I've done this with a DVD player that was doing the same thing. Replaced a bulging cap and it's good as new.
    I have an older LG Flatron monitor that someone gave me and it's still working to this day. Got it to replace my old CRT monitor that was suffering from cold solder joints in the horizontal deflection. I haven't fixed that because I have the LCD monitor.

      It’s a slightly different size. I got a similar LG monitor without the AC adaptor and none of the heads on my universal laptop charger would fit. I ended up desoldering the power input to the monitor and replacing it with a standard sized socket from some old electronics.

    Thanks for the great video, once again! I have a question. I recently bought an ESR meter, but it did not come with a reference table. Well, after searching on the internet, it turns out there are quite a variety of tables that differ by quite a bit. Are they for different types of capacitors? What would you suggest as a good reference table for measuring ESR? Thanks so much, and take care!

    This happens to mine as well. But sometimes the OSD also pops up, options get selected, values get changed, just random phantom stuff, started a few years ago, happens maybe at least once a week. Then it goes back to working normal. Do you think that these "phantom" issues could also be related to the power supply?

    Can you analyze an adapter and tell if it's bad by the output? Or do you have to take it apart to analyze? Good idea not to leave computer on when not in use. Wear and tear on the cooling fans and hard drive.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  5 лет назад +1

      Sure you can. Put it under a load and watch the output voltage and ripple. It would be terrible. I didn't need to go down that road because I knew it would be bad. See enough power supply failure modes and you get to know what is wrong before cracking it open.

    i use this for 3d modeling and texuring so the color quality is pretty important for me (but the reolution over 1k nope because not any vga able to handle million polygon meshes in 4k)
    and i got this flickering bug.. tired everything driver update, clean resintsall in safe mode another cable.. nothing helped... aaaanddddd i wasted 700$ to buy a new monitor. what is piece of shit compared to this... 1800--2000$ monitors have a similar quality.... what is pain in ass currently for me.
